    I started with the Linear impressions book. Learned those formations or activities. I just repeated them over & over. And started seeing patterns and hearing phrases inside those formations. And almost magically the lines came up in my playing because they were absorbed naturally. That's when I realized I would be able to learn, play and understand Jazz vocabulary & Language. This really works! I'll try to get on the presale before it ends to complement my own studies.

    Hey man, I bought Linear Expressions after I saw your first video on it months ago, so thanks for putting me on! I was wondering if you recommend learning each line in multiple positions? Each line is in a specific position in the book but I notice you sometimes play the lines or fragments of them in different places/strings. Any recommendations around this?

    • @carlospellot2426
      @carlospellot2426 5 днів тому

      @@stillrobb.5800 @stillrobb.5800 you should learn vocabulary in multiple positions.. Linear Expressions was really inspiring, but the format is outdated and sometimes confusing. What Armin has done is to develop his method using the Martino concept as a springboard for ideas and a sense of improvisational or musical freedom that lets you navigate through complex harmony in a straightforward way using (guitar friendly) shapes & minor vocabulary as a basis for improv. Ex. If you play C- over EbMaj it will sound Lydian. If you play F- over the EbMaj7 it will sound Ionian. C- Over F7 sounds Mixolydian. I wish i had discovered this method many years ago. After studying linear expressions I went to Martino's "Creative Force" books and dvd's... Guitarmin is way more accesible than Martino and still alive Convert to Minor works!! Good luck!

      @@stillrobb.5800 Linear expressions works like a minor CAGED system. At least i use it by dividing the fretboard in 5 zones or chord shapes that fit the Linear Expressions. But Armin's method organizes everything you need to know. So you learn vocabulary in different zones of the guitar and then you transpose to different keys. Give it a try, a disciplined person will get amazing results in a very very short time.. I preach convert to minor because it really changed my view and enjoyment of the guitar. It all clicked for me and I started sounding more like what I was listening and it motivated me to keep going. I have been using this in Rock & Neo-soul stuff as well.

    I found out that this old players condense everything to it's barest minimum. If you follow Barry Harris style, you'll start playing Jazz almost immediately, George Benson thinks of only 2 chords and don't think too much scales, wes Montgomery don't know much theory and now pat martino thinking of just one scale, but all this guys are great players. But all this modern guitar teachers will bore you out with millions of scales and modes and thousands of chords.

      For diatonic chords, it works like this: For a minor chord, you can just play your minor language without moving around. For a major chord, you can play in relative minor - Cmaj becomes Am, its enharmonic equivalent. If you want you could also play Em, which would give you a Lydian sound. For dominant, you can play up a fifth. C7 becomes Gm. C7 describes the Mixolydian and Gm describes the Dorian modes derived from their parent key, F major, they are enharmonically equivalent. A half diminished chord can be played up a minor 3rd - Cm7b5 becomes Ebm. Again, the C half diminished is the chord built from the seventh note of the key of Db major, so the Dorian of that key, Ebm, is equivalent. In linear expressions Pat shows how this works from the perspective of chord tones. He treats every chord as an inverted and/or incomplete form of a minor chord e.g. the Dm6 chord in its third inversion is Bm7b5, and can also be seen as a rootless G9.

    I really like how you're simplifying this. I'm so glad to have found these videos. I took one jazz improv class in college and it was awful. But that was mostly because it was part of the "music program," and so they couldn't tell you to "just convert to minor" or they wouldn't have any more paying customers after that one lesson! I stumbled upon what I think is the same concept you're talking about a few years ago, but I think of it like this: you can simply play the major scale of the key you're currently in and *as the chords change underneath the major scale, the tonalities of the modes emerge from the major scale* because ultimately all the modes of any given key are just rearrangements of the notes of the parent major scale. Of course, it then behooves you to learn the major scale backwards and forwards in all keys all over the neck and to develop your ear to be able to emphasize the chord tones as the chords pass by underneath. And of course add passing tones for flavor. Still working on all that!

  • @ZCBeats1
    @ZCBeats1 10 днів тому

    What about when it comes to targeting chord tones? Doesn’t thinking about every chord in terms of it’s minor form hinder your ability to spot the chord tones for the chord your playing over?? All the chord Tones are right there, available to use and you will be able to use them consciously or intuitively. (You should know the notes on the fingerboard, and use your ears). The Pat Martino lines are just a foundation to get the idea and sounds. If you do the homework you will see for yourself. The idea is to be able to use all of your standard minor information like pentatonic and simple triads on top of those progressions. Minorization really worked for me and made it less intimidating, expanding my ability to see the fretboard and chord connections. Augmented & Diminished chords are used as parental forms.
