Honestly I've had my later 2cv6 for 9 years and I've never achieved a crank start, even when the engine is in its best state of tune. On the other hand I also have an earlier 425cc car that I've managed to crank start several times. Don't know why but the older car just responds better, I do it to freak out friends as a party trick and sometimes I don't even look like a hyperventilating mess by the time it actually happens!

Think the piston seizes and that’s what causes the hinge to break also the footwell light doesn’t come on when you open the glovebox usually it’s via the door opening or with the lights on

Ahhh...the Audi damped glovebox lid. Another Audi solution to a problem that did not exist. Thanks Audi..

That's a nice 2cv, same paint code as my current one❤ ...BUT... I feel like I've got to be a buzzkill. NEVER crank any car like that. 1. With the ignition off, move the crank to get her on a compression stroke 2. Get the crank into a 7, 8 or 9 o'clock position and turn ignition on 3. Use one hand (left is easier for me) to grip the crank WITHOUT wrapping your thumb around the handle 4. In a strong fast pulling motion rotate the crank and hopefully she'll start I normally find 3 stomps on the throttle (there is a throttle pump on the later 2bbl carbs) or a touch of choke helps and it still often takes 2 or more cranks if the engine is cold This video shows what NOT to do ... Wrapping your hand around the crank means a kickback will really hurt or break your wrist. Turning the handle 360 means if she kicks back on the bottom arc the crank will take your teeth out !!! Also the crank "rests" on the aperture of the fan guard and you can see in the video how much it's buckling the fan shroud from the stress of being rotated. Handcranking is easier if you do it right ... but it's a lost skill that looks basic but needs some thought. As a sidenote ... the technique isn't as easy on a 2cv as a lot of earlier cars mainly because the crank handle is a bit crap and it's quite low. There are 2 types of 2cv handcrank and the one with the crank in the middle is harder to use safely. The type in this video is the better of the two IMO. Anyway, nice car and glad to see that she's getting used. Please don't think I'm hating on the video, just constructive criticism 👍

You can drill a small hole in the backside of the piston and spray a little wd40 in there to make it operate much smoother.

It helps to have a small amount of choke if the engine is warm. More choke is it is cold. A well tuned 2CV is easier to start. The DS, GS, Ami and Dyanes all had crank handles. I have owned 3 new 2CV6s over 43 years. Currently have 1990 Charleston.

Thanks so much. Never would have thought to look for some specially made brackets to fix this hinge. £3.29 on eBay rather than a new glove box at £200!

if the crank didnt get out when it started, it would kick back and you guys probably would have a problem. thats why you need to turn it only 180 degrees but not 360

    • @shanedebarra4986

@@HaraldSjellose It was engaged properly ... the crank won't turn the shaft if it isn't engaged and the locating pins fit very easily into the sockets. You can only turn the crank clockwise, once the engine starts the crank gets pushed out because the engine speed forces the crank handle pins out of the sockets ... there is no danger if the car starts... the danger is if the car backfires then the pins catch and rotate the handle backwards 👍
