Exploring The Past With Louis Hatchett
United States
Приєднався 15 сер 2022
My name is Louis Hatchett. I'm a published author and book editor with 30 years experience in book publishing; writing books, articles, biographies, discographies, reference materials and editing of digital print-on-demand books for sale on my website. I'm a freelance editor, music and literature historian, located in Henderson, Kentucky. I specialize in the restoration late 1800s to mid-1900s grass-roots folk and country music, plus various books.
Years ago, a friend of mine gave me copies of his personal recordings that he captured live on the radio in 1958, featuring the reunion of Bob Wills, Johnny Lee Wills and the all of the musicians from the Boys From Oklahoma and The Texas Playboys. I digitally remastered these rare KVOO radio broadcast recordings from 1958 and included them on my UA-cam channel and on my website.

What you are about to hear is one of about 200 transcriptions made by Johnnie Lee Wills and his Boys that were made for General Mills in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1950 and 1952. These are called the Schmitt Transcriptions and they were played on country music radio stations throughout the United States. They are pretty hard to find today. The sound quality of these transcriptions varies; some are better than others, depending on the quality of the transcription discs, but you will hear them all over time.
These shows were created in the studio for radio DJs to create a Johnnie Lee Wills radio broadcast as if he and the band were in the radio station. They were recorded in bulk, one after the other, in a few days. Each show was about 12 minutes long. The dates of the transcriptions are listed below. Each one of these shows were broadcast on most country music radio stations throughout the United States during the 1950s. These shows were created for the purpose of free distribution for public radio.
The 200 Schmitt Transcription that Johnnie Lee Wills and his Boys made were recorded on the following dates:
a. June 26-27, 1950
b. August 20-23, 1950
c. October 1, 1950
d. March 10-12, 1952 (40 shows)
e. April 20-23, 1952 (39 shows)
f. May 19, 1952
As to the musicians, featured are Johnnie Lee Wills, rhythm banjo and fiddle; Leon Huff, vocals; Clarence Cagle, piano; Don Harlan, sax and clarinet); Julian “Curly” Lewis, fiddle and vocals, Henry Boatman, fiddle; Chuck Adams, bass; Howard David, drums; Buster Magness, steel guitar; probably, Eb Gray, guitar. Frank Sims was the announcer.
I have digitally remastered the original recording for clarity and stereo effect. I hope you enjoy it.

I think i prefer these over the Bob Wills transcriptions.
There will be 200 of these Johnnie Lee Wills shows in all, so I think you'll be satisfied. Hope so anyway!
Thank you!!!
You're welcome. Sorry it took so long to get from program #1 to #2.
Love the intro theme tune
What a treasure!
For years I am a fan of Bob's youngest bro Billy Jack and his band. Some of them are on stage while this got aired and recorded. I have all of Billy Jack's and most songs of Bob, but I am afraid I never had a chance listening to these recordings. Are these on vinyl; or CD? Yes, like Bob's Tiffany or Billy Jack's broadcasts (and some recordings), e.g. this version of Rag Mop(p) is pure swing. Indeed in the style of previous big bands (from the 40's) - or Bob in the mid 30's!
These recordings actually came from someone in the Tulsa area who took the time each day to record their noonday broadcasts. Eventually there will be Johnnie Lee Wills broadcasts as well.
I will say that if you want these recordings, go to my website, exploring the past.net, and you can buy the broadcasts. You will have to download them to your computer to acquire them. That's the only way to get them. See the tag at the end of each video.
@@Louis_Hatchett Thanx. I did reckon this link, but I thought this would be on "for collectors" vinyl.
Congratulations on the completion of this series. Certainly one for the history books! Well over five hours of astonishing performances by Bob Wills' hottest band! Thank you Louis. Much appreciated.
I'm glad you like them. There were a whole lot more, but youtube banished them, citing copyright infringement. In May, youtube made some sort of deal with music publishers to not publish anything that had a copyright restriction. When they ban "Faded Love" and "Roly Poly," you know something is wrong. The problem is that these are being banned by artificial intelligence. A machine! Thus, some woman complained that her video of a 500-year-old Indian song was banned because someone in the entire world claimed copyright infringement. Another guy claimed he couldn't put on video his own song because it was copyrighted. The whole thing is just nuts. In about 200 days all of these videos and the ones that were banned will be going up on Facebook. Facebook doesn't have problems with copyright restrictions. These videos have been going up there, one per day, since July. I will continue to publish music on youtube, because, as I see it, if anyone can claim copyright infringement, there won't be any music on youtube, and the whole system will crash on its own. I think corrections will come after the folly of relying on a machine will expose itself.
Wow you certainly have loads of stuff. I've always liked what I've heard of Bob Wills so I'm really intrigued by your channel.
I'm certainly glad you found me. I think I've put up about 300 videos now of things that no one else had. I'm starting to release Johnnie Lee Wills material now. Johnnie Lee and Bob used many of the same musicians. A lot of these videos are also on Facebook, too. UA-cam has blocked a lot of the Tiffany Transcriptions, citing copyright restrictions. Facebook doesn't care, and when those go up in a few months the selections that were blocked will be included. Anyway, glad you're enjoying them.
Thank you Louis!!!😊
You're welcome!
I've about come to the end of the usable Bob Wills material that I had. Today I filmed the introductions for the 200 Johnnie Lee Wills Schmitt Transcriptions. Those will be going up once the Tiffany Transcription material has run out. That might be a few weeks off, though.
I love that distorted and haunting texture of the tracks.
Some of the best live-in-the-studio recorded work in popular music's canon.
Bob Wills is Still the king though
Thank you!😊
Good stuff thank, you for putting this together.
You're most welcome! I appreciate the feedback.
Bob Wills King Status: Still, The.
who was in the band at this period ?
The personnel was sort of fluid, but it included: Bob Wills, fiddle Lester (Junior) Barnard, electric guitar Eldon Shamblin, electric guitar Noel Boggs, steel guitar Herb Remington, steel guitar Roy Honeycutt, steel guitar (carefully listen for stylings to tell which musician is playing) Alex Brashear, trumpet Tommy Duncan, vocal (On some of them, Luke Wills, vocal) (on some of them, Tommy “Spike” Doss, vocal) (on some of them, Dean and Evelyn McKinney, vocals) Joe Holley, fiddle Louis Tierney, fiddle Johnny Cuviello, drums Millard Kelso, piano Tiny Moore, electric mandolin Ocie Stockard, rhythm banjo Billy Jack Wills, bass And there is undocumented possibilities that others may include: Johnny Edwards, drums Monty Mountjoy, drums Luke Wills, drums Leonard Seago, fiddle, Jimmy Widener, rhythm banjo
these stuff are not on the Tiffany's kscope records i own ... 1946 with Jr Barnard,1947 with Tiny Moore ...
There were a lot more of the Tiffany Transcriptions than those found on the Kaleidoscope albums. There were about 300 made. I have about 270 or thereabouts.
Grandpa sounds good! Thanks for posting
Glad you enjoy it!
Many thanks for the share of this classic material. I saw a few of the reunion shows that Johnnie Lee did in the parking lot of his western wear store back in the day and got to chat with JLW a few times at the counter in his store. I remember he had some reissue 45s for sale in a box next to the register.
I'm glad you got to see him several times. He seemed like a very nice guy. Down to earth.
That was a long song! Just one tune on this video?
Yeah, youtube keeps rejecting a lot of music videos, claiming it's copyrighted. They are using AI technology to do this. I don't think a human being is involved. I put up 12 songs and 11 of them get rejected because it's copyrighted. Back in May Google, which owns youtube, started doing this. They made some sort of deal with music publishers. Interestingly, Facebook doesn't seem to care if a song is copyrighted or not. What's interesting is that almost anyone throughout the entire world can say that a song is copyrighted, and youtube will ban the music without any investigation. A woman complained that a song that she put up--one that was over 500 years old--was banned because someone said it was copyrighted. Another man said that his own song was banned because it was copyrighted. You can see the idiocy of what happens when you let a machine make your decisions for you. At some point this policy is going to cause unintended problems for the company.
@@Louis_Hatchett Stop the world and let me off!
@@CiscoDuck Well, I'll just have to work around it the best way I can. If you want to hear all of the Tiffany Transcriptions, you can go to the website "exploringthepast.net and you can download all of the videos I do without all these deletions. It's a small cost, but you can do what you want. I think the entire 1945 "Bob Wills Drunk Session" is for free. At least that's my memory of it. There is a guy who maintains my website for me. I just write the material and sit in front of a camera. I am not intelligent enough to know anything about computers. This stuff was science fiction when I was in school.
I love this - Thank you😊 I enjoy your music history lessons just as much as I enjoy the music. Any chance you could make a short video about how difficult it was to collect all of this? I’m assuming most of your collection was gathered in the 70’s? If that’s true then it probably took some detective work and dedication to find all of this. I’m just some random guy in Texas who is curious. Thanks again!
Actually, it was not hard to collect all the western swing music I have. I simply purchased every LP that I could get my hands on via specialty music catalogs, originally with Publishers Central Bureau, and later with monthly purchases from Rounder Records near Boston, Massachusetts and Down Home Music near Oakland, California. Then, later, what I did was this: Sometime in the mid-1980s over a three-month period, I put a $15 classified advertisement in Gold Mine magazine, which was a widely-read music publication. I advertised that I had all of the Bob Wills recordings in chronological order for sale, which I had amassed during the previous decade. I asked $10 each for eight 90-minute cassettes. That was the beginning. Each time I made a sale, I would call up the purchaser and make a friend. I would ask them what they had in their collection. They were so happy to share their collections with me that they sent me thousands of recordings on cassette, mostly western swing from the 1930s through the 1950s. They were as dedicated to preserving this music as I was. A lot of these recordings were not great, but most were in pretty good shape. My intention is to slowly put a lot of my collection on youtube. I am now putting material on facebook too. I hope I have answered your question satisfactorily.
@@Louis_Hatchett That is awesome! Thank you 😊
Loved it. Some good ol' raw country western music. Bob Wills is still the King.
I'm glad you enjoy it!
Back in the mid 60s Bob Wills was in Douglas, AZ for a live show at the Red Barn tavern and I forgot to go. Never been to a CM concert.
Johnny Gimble on that fiddel.
Joe Duncan, Tommy and Glynn’s brother, was lead singer for Johnnie Lee in the 40’s. I have the pictures.
I have more Johnnie Lee Wills broadcasts coming up. And transcriptions, too.
Excellent recording! Thank you🙂
The Texas Playboys Are On The Air!
👍
Both the Bakersfield California sound and Austin Texas Outlaw Country were heavily influenced by Bob Wills and The Texas Playboys.
Fabulous! Today there's Asleep At The Wheel Billy Mata and The Texas Tradition, The Quebe Sisters Band and more keeping Western Swing Alive 🎉
Fabulous and curiously modern in a timeless way......
Thank you so much for uploading this. I'm doing some cleaning up at a historic Park museum today. And this will be the perfect type of country music to clean up our little museum. I'm really enjoying the great quality of these transcriptions
Well, thank you very much! I appreciate your comment. I try to please! I'm glad you enjoy them and have found a practical use for them for your museum. Ambiance is important to a customer's overall experience of your museum.

It's great. A unique moment in time. Antique and excellent.
Thank you.
Thanks for the music. As the old saying goes, those guys were "tighter than Dick's hatband" that first day.
My grandmother was a HUGE Bob Wills fan. As teenagers in Seminole, OK in the mid-30s, she & her sisters regularly traveled to see the band play, kinda like groupies ✌🏼😂
I enjoy your history lessons as much as the music! Thank you for the link☺

It is for people just like you that I put them on youtube for you to enjoy. I have some others in the pipeline that you may like.
Sound quality is fantastic, great performance from band and to have a live version of the best song from the McKinney sisters Tiffany Transcriptions album with a Herb Remington solo is just amazing
I really like that McKinney sisters performance. The spirit of the whole band just jelled into one of the all-time great performances.
@@Louis_Hatchett I've never cared much for the album but always loved that one track
