Military life as a spouse married to a US Army officer and a daughter whose father was a pilot in the United States Air Force has afforded me the privilege of living all over our country and overseas. When it came to choosing our current home, we did copious research and travel before determining that the Bitterroot Valley of Western Montana was the ideal place to enjoy the splendor of the outdoors and live in a smaller and friendlier community.
My dream was to purchase a property that allowed me to have horses (I have two quarter horses and a feisty mini-donkey). My husband Paul wanted to hike or ski to the wilderness right from our home. And we got both our wishes!

Living Near the Famous Yellowstone TV Series Ranch in Darby, MT
The popular TV series "Yellowstone" has resulted in more visitors coming to check out the Town of Darby, MT and the iconic Chief Joseph Ranch, AKA Dutton Ranch. Located in Western Montana in the southern portion of the Bitterroot Valley, Darby real estate includes a wide arrange of offerings from in-town living, to homes with acreage and awesome valley and mountain views, and even properties that include Bitterroot River frontage. While our prices have gone up, there are still some affordable properties available.

I think it's so funny how the guards that park in front of the ranch think they can stop you from stopping on the opposite shoulder of the road to take a few photos. They can't.

How are the winters there in darby, snow alot?
We get about 50 inches of snow a year spread out typically from October to April. We like to call ourselves the "Banana Belt of Montana" since compared to other areas of Montana our winters are milder and less windy. A lot of people who irrigate their land depend on higher snow levels so they have more water throughout the summer.

I've seen much less than 50" and in 1996 we had 44" on Christmas Eve but mostly when it snows it doesn't stick too long but Darby is in the southern portion of the valley which is about 3800' in elevation whereas the lower reaches in the northern portion of the the valley like Lolo are at 3200'. Snow doesn't stick typically too long below 4000' so get with Tracy and find out about the banana harvest.
Craig, lots of people are happy we have snow on the ground right now! But fortunately we don’t experience the high winds of other portions of Montana.

A lot of my childhood, and where I consider "home", is in Florence MT. The Bitterroot is a special place. Even other areas of Montana just don't feel like home to me, like the town I was born in (Anaconda) or the next town over where I spent several years (Butte). I currently live just north of Atlanta, and I'm chomping at the bit to return to the Bitterroot either in 2022 or 2023. Keep the valley beautiful for me! And thanks for the vid!

How do you like it here?
I love it here! It's serene and I have easy access to the outdoors to walk and ride my horses. The only downside is that I am located away from a lot of my family. But hey, they enjoy visiting us here. How about you?
That's nice, I feel the exact same way! It's gorgeous, there's so many places to go for walks or camp.This is the only place I have ever lived in. And it is absolutely amazing, no one could not love it here!
