Handmade Tools: Creating Marks Using Leftover Paint
I was recently inspired by a workshop taught by @JenDixon for @ThePigeonLetters Summer Creative Retreat 2024 to start creating my own tools. I then used leftover paint from another project and some prepared sketchbook spreads created using leftover paint from one of my @user-pn7vw8zw5b classes as surfaces to paint upon. What a fun experience! I'm definitely going to create some more tools from materials I have lying around.

As I was preparing examples for some recent summer art camps I was running, I wanted to share this easy creative project that makes for a great way to easily get creating, would be a nice warm up to a creative session, or could be a sketchbook spread. In it you use ink lines, shapes, and patterns to break up the page. Then you go in with a limited color palette using watercolor to further break...

Here I had been doing some abstract mark making using items found in nature and I had quite a bit of red-orange paint left over. How To Create through an Art Slump - Skillshare Class Sneak Peek
🤩This is so awesome! Thank you for being on the Summer Creative Retreat with me and for namedropping us here. I love seeing you experimenting and embracing the unexpected along the way. I absolutely love that little circle tool - the repeatable shapes it makes are so good.
It is like a beautiful quilt ❤
Thank you so much, Kathy! I love that you see it as a quilt. I was thinking that too. :)
Great video Elisabeth. Love the watercolors and the process with all the colors.
Thank you so much, Ivan! It was a really fun class.
Fabulous birds, thanks so much for sharing💖
Thank you so much, Maria!
This exhibit looks so cool. Love the entire vibe of it.
I loved it! They did such a good job putting it together.
I like the outcome. I'll probably try this too.💖
Thank you so much! I hope you do. :) I'd love to see how it turns out.
Great video process. A relaxing way to create art that I didn't think, great job.
Thank you so much and thanks for checking my video out!
@@elisabethwellfare You're welcome.
So fun! I think it turned out great. I'm curious if/what you'll create on top of that fun patchwork background. I hope you're having a nice summer so far. :)
I'm not sure, Em. It'll probably need to be something more graphic with black and white to stand out against all that color and pattern. :) I'm having a great summer so far! I hope you are too! :)
@@elisabethwellfare I like it as is! I could also see B&W on top being fun. :)
Nice thanks
Thanks for checking out my video!
How could you not include the Modigliani???!!
I loved seeing the Modigliani sculptures again, his work is amazing but unfortunately it wasn't possible to include every piece we saw.
It’s so true that art changes for us through different times in our lives, there’s always something new to find. Your trip here looks amazing, so much to see! 🤩
Thanks for checking it out, Gemma!😊
I need to try this! 👏
I had a feeling it might interest you, Gemma. :).
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😂🎉❤❤❤❤❤😂❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Incredible
Thank you so much! Do you create collages?
Fun idea! Maybe a self portrait in this style could be interesting?
Ooh, I l love that idea, Emily! I'll have to add it to my list of art ideas to explore. :)
Or when your self portrait month rolls back around? ❤
@@emk1312 I love that idea, Em! I did a collage portrait for one of the first and it was so fun. Thanks for the great inspiration! Are you creating anything fun this week?
@@elisabethwellfare Yay! I can't wait to see. I've been dabbling but no finished works to share just yet. I hope you're doing well! :)
@@emk1312 I hope you are doing well too.
Fun! Would love to see how you use these in projects!
Thanks, Ridhi! I'll be incorporating these in future art experiments. :)
Mark making is so fun - and there are so many texture-makers to be found out and about! I loved the pine cone prints 🤩
The pinecone was one of my favorites too. :)
The collage came out so cool, I love all those primary colours zinging together! Your artist-inspired classes sound really fun 😍
Thanks, Gemma! I'm really enjoying them. :)
“Joy in the scraps” I love this idea.
I do too! Thanks for checking this video, Mark.
I loved so much I am not sure if is all color or your details to cut but I like it. Thanks
Thank you so much! And thanks for checking out my video. Do you create collage art?
That looks so brilliant, what amazing lanterns! I can’t pick a favourite!
Thanks for watching, Gemma! The Urban Sketchers of West Michigan group is going in a few weeks and I'm so excited not only to join them for the first time but to also get to enjoy the lantern festival at a slower pace. :)
@@elisabethwellfare ooh lovely, so you might get to sketch some as you stroll maybe? Have a great time!
@@GemmaThePen Thanks! :) Do you have any art adventures planned?
That is so cool!
Thanks for checking out my video, Brigitte! It's such a neat experience.
🔥+ 1 sub!
Thanks, Mark!
Absolutely love this!!! 🎨🥳
I'm so glad, Joanne! :) They were so fun to create. ☺
I love how you just go with the flow and start exploring the canvas, without a plan in mind. Do you have a favorite color pencil brand you can recommend?
Thanks, Jutta! It's really fun to see what comes out of creating this way. :) Oh yes, Prismacolor by far are my favorite brand of colored pencils. They are a soft lead that layers and blends very nicely.
Lovely! Did you mount your painting into a cardboard?
Thank you so much, Keren! Yes, I found mounting my watercolor paper to cardboard first to work really well when I embroider into my paintings. However, I've done it without mounting first and that works well too, as long as my paper wasn't too thin or delicate. Do you embroider or sew back into your artwork?
❤❤❤
Love this. ❤
Thank you so much, Jen! Have you ever played with embroidering back into paintings?
No, I mostly embroider onto cardstock in card making. But I’m always on the lookout for other uses for embroidery. I hope to start doing it on my photographs.
@@jenrodgers4677 What a great idea for card making! I'd also like to incorporate it into my photography or work more of my photography into my embroidered paintings.
Yes, I was happy to learn you have a class about this. Will have to check it out!
Fun! I’ve never tried this before.
I think you'd like sewing back into your paintings. If you are curious to learn more about it definitely check out my Skillshare class.
Happy Valentine’s Day! I love this one. Turned out so fun and colorful. ✨
Happy Valentine's Day! Thanks! It was a lot of fun to create. :)
I love your love bugs, too cute!
Thanks, Jutta! :)
I love the soothing of zentangling!
So do I. :)
Thats my favorite so far!
I never knew rubbing alcohol can be useful in art! thank you!
It also works to dissolve colored pencil which brightens the colors and blends.
So inspiring!
I'm so glad, Jutta! Thanks for checking it out.
This looks like a fun project!
Thanks, Brigitte! I had a lot of fun creating it and even made a second one when my youngest kiddo asked if I'd make him one too. :)
How lovely! What do,you do to prevent your glued hearts from wrinkling? Every time I do that, my paper warps… 🙄 And do you have a favorite fineliner brand?
Thanks! I occasionally put a piece of copy paper over them and press and rub the surface to ensure they stay flat. My favorite is iBayam Fineliner Pens but they aren't waterproof so I have to be careful with mixed media work. Otherwise my go to are Micron pens.
That is a lovely heart card! I could imagine cutting out letters from other watercolor artworks to create some sort of valentine‘s card sayings! <3
Thank you so much, Jutta! Ooh, that's a great idea! Thanks for sharing!
❤❤
Thank you so much for checking out my video! Are you creating any Valentine themed art?
Loving this ❤ one!
Thanks, Em! It's one of my favorites so far. :)
Love all of that texture ~ especially the salted (paper) pickles.
Thanks, Em! I had so much fun creating this project. There will definitely be more food mixed media collages in my future. 😁
Your work turned out beautiful!
Thank you so much, Em! :)
I love these Valentine‘s videos! ❤ (I‘m Jutta!)
Thanks you so much, Jutta! I'm glad you enjoying them. :)
Amazing! Thank you for this!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! If you try it out, I'd love to hear how it goes as it's a new technique I'm exploring more and more in my artistic practice.
@@elisabethwellfare , I will, thanks!
OMG it looks so big and tidy and organized!!! I love the red couch! :D
I'm so happy with how it feels to walk in and create in here. Thanks for stopping by, Jutta! I love the red couch too! :)
Thanks for sharing your art studio. So much beautiful space. The couch and table are so inviting.
Thank you so much! Add thanks for stopping by. :)
Such a cool space! It’s super you have an easel space now. I love your flower table, and you have an extraordinary pen-hoard ☺️💛
Thanks, Gemma! I love it down there! And thanks for stopping by! :)
Pretty snowflakes. Ill have to try that.
Thanks, Megan! If you do, I'd love to hear how it goes. :)
Ooh, I love both of these techniques!
Let me know if you experiment with these techniques. I'm excited to see what else I can do with monoprinting and watercolor. I'd like to explore less water and dry paper for more control.
Will do! I’ve seen people using a Gelli plate but I don’t have one. Similar concept? Or maybe the Gelli plates wouldn’t handle watercolor as well?
@@emk1312 Yes, same concept except those give you only one versus the mirror if you fold it. I don't have a gelli plate either but am very tempted to get one. The gelli plates use acrylic ink. I'm not sure I've seen anyone using watercolor but I'd love to try it.
@@elisabethwellfare Could be a fun experiment :)
