Episode 20: Navigating Difficult Choices
On this episode of Founders Thoughts, we dive into the nuances of making difficult decisions as a CEO.
As the CEO of a company, your number one day-to-day job is making decisions. It could be regarding the product direction, cash flow, people-related, strategic directions, and so on.
In most cases, your team might provide many insights and data points to help you make the decisions, but the buck stops with you.
While minor decisions with short-term impact are relatively easy, the bigger ones-those that affect your cash reserves, team, or company culture-can be daunting. You might find yourself hesitating or postponing these tough calls.
I have dealt with these situations by visualizing the long-term impact. Often, difficult decisions make sense when you consider their potential benefits a year or even a decade down the road.
Another useful strategy that worked out for me was to lean towards the harder choice when faced with two choices. The easy way out might seem attractive initially, but the more challenging decision is often the right one in the long run.
There are more details in the video; please watch it and share your feedback and experience of how you handled decisions.

Episode 19: Talking business with your kids | Founders Thoughts
Переглядів 343 місяці тому
On this episode of Founders Thoughts, I'm diving into a topic that I relate to very deeply: discussing business at home. There's often debate about whether it's wise to bring work conversations into the house. Some worry it might stress or involve children in issues beyond their understanding. However, my experience has been quite different. I joined my father's business at the age of 12. Handl...
Episode 18: Risk of premature scaling | Founders Thoughts
Переглядів 173 місяці тому
On today’s episode of Founders Thoughts, I would like to talk about why I believe premature scaling is the main reason for the failure of startups… When as a startup you scale prematurely, you face two issues-you run out of money or you lose your agility as a company… In our case, I built @BizTalk360 completely on my own… I remained a sole member company until we hit 30 customers…. Only after t...
Episode 17: How I dedicate time for my kids: My daily routine | Founders Thoughts
Переглядів 493 місяці тому
Welcome to this episode of "Founders Thoughts" where I share how I dedicate time to my kids alongside my CEO responsibilities. As parents, our time is the most valuable asset we can give our children, especially during their formative years. Many CEOs and Founders during meetups often ask me, "How do I manage to do this amidst busy schedules?" - I have a simple hack! I handle all school runs an...
Episode 16: Why a Great Product Alone Won't Guarantee Your Startup's Success | Founders Thoughts
Переглядів 103 місяці тому
It's a common pitfall for many founders to believe that once they've built something amazing, customers will flock in, and the business will take off effortlessly. However, my experience has taught me otherwise. The reality is that a great product is just the tip of the iceberg, constituting only about 20% of what it takes to succeed. The remaining 80% lies in other critical areas, such as robu...
Episode 15: Constraints Boost Productivity| Founders Thoughts
Переглядів 213 місяці тому
One key lesson I've learned over the years is the power of setting constraints, particularly time constraints. ⏰ It's amazing how much more focused and efficient you become when you're up against a deadline. There's no room for dilly-dallying, just pure productivity! In my experience, having a clear deadline sharpens your focus and drives better results. 🎯 Whether building a product or completi...

Even though I bootstrapped Kovai.co. I'm personally an active investor in the Startup ecosystem. Over the years I have made many investments, some of them did extremely well and some of them were shut down. I apply some of my gut and basic principles when it comes to my investment thesis. I have demystified my concepts here in this video. #FoundersThoughts #StartupInvesting #TogetherWeGrow
Episode 13: Is involving your spouse in the business a good idea| Founders Thoughts
Переглядів 463 місяці тому
This week, I dive into a common point of debate - "Is involving your spouse in the Business a good idea?" 🌟 At first, I believed in keeping family and business separate. No friends or family, just a couple of odd hires. However, I don’t know how many people know this; my wife, Gowri Ramkumar, is Vice President of Sales & Customer Success at Kovai.co. Truth: she started as a junior QA engineer f...
Episode 12: Difference Between Happiness and Satisfaction| Founders Thoughts
Переглядів 203 місяці тому
One recurring thought that has always crossed my mind is the common confusion between satisfaction and happiness. When people inquire about my satisfaction with life, and I respond with a "no," it is often misconstrued as unhappiness. However, this assumption is incorrect. When I say I am not satisfied, it's not an expression of discontent; rather, it reflects my belief that satisfaction can br...
Episode 11: Context is king| Founders Thoughts

In this episode of the "Founders Thoughts" series, I wanted to discuss an important lesson while seeking advice: "Context is King." I receive quite a few requests from new founders seeking advice, and I appreciate your trust in my insights. However, I want to stress the importance of following advice carefully. Here's why: context matters. As a founder, you uniquely understand your company's st...
Episode 10: Don’t delay difficult conversations| Founders Thoughts

In this Founder's Thoughts episode building Kovai.co, I want to address a common challenge for us as Founders-navigating difficult conversations. Coming from a tech background, managing people can be our biggest hurdle. Whether it is dissatisfaction, someone contemplating departure, or a team underperforming, these issues demand attention. We often try to avoid or delay these tough discussions,...
Episode 9: Avoid building a flat organizational structure | Founders Thoughts
Переглядів 343 місяці тому
I've noticed that many startups and new-age companies often boast an entirely flat organizational structure, where anyone can directly approach the founder with their tasks. While it may sound appealing, as your organization starts to scale and reaches around 25-30 employees, it is crucial to establish an organizational hierarchy. The issue arises when you start scaling. Your company will begin...
Episode 8: Stop looking for new hacks| Founder’s Thoughts
Переглядів 393 місяці тому
Today, I will share another discipline I learned running and scaling Kovai.co "Stop searching for new hacks." Many young founders who have recently launched startups often dedicate much time to constantly seeking new ideas. They consume countless UA-cam videos, attend numerous conferences, read many books, and listen to plenty of podcasts in their quest for innovative ways to enhance and expand...
