Northern Illinois Storm Chase Derecho and Funnels July 15, 2024 by Matt Schuch
July 15, 2024 storm chase of the derecho that went through Northern Illinois. Videos are all taken along IL Rt 72 from Davis Junction eastward to Genoa, IL. Saw 2 probable funnels however i could not confirm any definite touchdowns....pending NWS surveys.

Chasing with College of DuPage Storm Chase group in 2019, this long rope funnel was thought to have not touched down, but i was later able to confirm from another chaser that this did briefly touch down in an oil field.

this storm produced some of the most intense positive lightning bolts that i have ever seen. this is a short clip of the "black lightning" . this was taken northwest of Abiline, TX . i believe the date was may 2 of 2019

Storm Chase from May 23, 2020. View from IL RT 23 & I55 looking west at a rotating wall cloud on the Pontiac, IL storm. This storm also produced a confirmed brief tornado near Elpaso, IL before we intercepted the storm. We followed this storm from Pontiac, IL to St Anne, IL. This was great! That was one awesome laminar shelf cloud the derecho sported. The inflow notch is very visible as well!
Were you parked on edson rd between cornfields for a bit?? I think i passed you before anything kicked off in DJ yet.
I wonder if that T-128 is located on Tripp Rd. I know that the 2001-130 is located on Driftwood Dr by the Rock County Christian School

We were only a few miles from it lol the green skies were pretty interesting to look at. It was a bit scary for some in the car but we were heading east and for a majority of it heading away from it. My brother thought he saw it but the most I saw was the green skies 😊
Where was this shot from? I watched the tornado form above my neighborhood. It touched down right over me.
this particulay shot was taken from the intersection of Prairis St. ( S. County Rd G ) & Sunny Lane Rd looking west. the other vido was taken on E. Woodman Rd crossing I90.
This is why rain-wrapped tornados are so dangerous. If you hadn't sat there and recorded the whole time, by the end it just looks like a "bad" thunderstorm with NO tornado visible (even though we know it is there).
Exactly! It was clear as day on radar what was happening with the storm. But visually, especially if you're not a chaser or weather savvy person, one could easily unknowingly drive right into a very compromising and dangerous situation.
Looks like a tight ef3 to me.
I haven't seen ANY damage photos/videos that would approach that strength, most looks like EF1 damage. There was a split level ranch that was missing the roof and the corner of one of the rooms on the 1 1/2 level, but rest of house looked good, so likely EF2 damage there. I haven't seen any EF3 dmg yet, at least NOT in the Janesville part of the tornado. Going through an urban area on a weekend evening without any reported injuries also would seem to preclude much EF3 damage, too.
radar volicity at times definightly was pretty tight.

Majority probably EF1 or lower, but worst damage in scattered spots likely EF2.
NWS rated the damage as EF2
Stop moving the camera and showing the clouds not the Tornado!
