Remember Catholic martyrs of the French Revolution: the Carmelite Saints of Compiègne | Faith Full
You may not realize it, but the Catholic faith was one of the great targets of the French Revolution, birthing martyrs and saints from persecution and bloodshed. Sixteen Carmelite nuns were beheaded in 1794 for remaining true to their vows, and nothing more. During the so-called Reign of Terror which saw revolutionaries sniffing out real and imagined conspiracies, these nuns were expelled from their monastic life and offered a choice: renounce their faith, and submit to extreme secularism, or be deemed enemies of the state.
The prioress Mother Teresa of St. Augustine proposed the sisters offer their lives for the salvation of France, fulfilling a prophetic dream from another sister a hundred years before. The act of sacrifice was offered while the nuns sang hymns and prayed, guillotined in front of a crowd faced with the consequence of madness.
Faith Full is a Catholic podcast hosted by Tony Ganzer. This episode features Jonathan O'Brien, author of "Called to Compiègne": www.amazon.com/Called-Compi%C3%A8gne-Jonathan-Michael-OBrien/dp/B0D72K2F5F

On a rainy night in Paris, the Catholic Bishop strikes the door of Notre Dame with his crozier, or staff, as French President Emmanuel Macron and mayor Anne Hidalgo look on. This ceremony on December 7, 2024, reconsecrated the Cathedral after the devastating fire in 2019.
To a Catholic, Notre Dame is God’s house. But to the French, it is part of the patrimoine, the collective French heritage and cultural identity of France. Yes, it’s still God’s house, but following the French Revolution France developed into a society governed by laicite-hyper secularism. During the Revolution, this Cathedral of Notre Dame was declared a temple of reason. Effigies were constructed on her floors. The traditional symbols and characteristics of true Catholicism, which is interwoven with France’s history, were eyed with suspicion. Priests and nuns were forced to take oaths to the republic, and those who didn’t were arrested.
I took a pilgrimage to France recently, and visited minor and major holy sites all over the country. I celebrated Mass at the cathedrals of Tours and Orleans, I prayed at the Marian apparition site of Pontmain, at the Abbaye of Mont Saint Michel, at Joan of Arc’s birthplace of Domremy La Pucelle, and where she saw the Dauphin crowned king in the cathedral of Reims. These and many other sites were powerful reminders of just how Catholic France was, and is, if you know where to look.
Americans often find a kinship in the idea of the French Revolution because a democracy emerged from the ruins of monarchy. But the story of the martyrs, now saints, of Compiegne, reminds us of the brutality.
To learn more about these brave women religious I spoke with Jonathan O’Brien, a Catholic convert who was touched by the story of the nuns in Compiegne and wrote his book: Called to Compiegne. We spoke before Pope Francis formally declared the nuns as saints through what’s called equipollent canonization: the Church believes these women are in Heaven, without reported modern miracles, as is usually required.
I asked Jonathan what inspired him to dig deep into their history:

My house didn't burn down: Catholic gratitude and wisdom from St. Thérèse of Lisieux

My house almost caught fire, and I had no idea of the danger until it was over, pieced together by burn marks on a wall and other clues around an old boiler system. I called a specialist to look at it, and he said bluntly: he’s come to believe things happen for a reason, and our house is still standing for a reason. I always try to express gratitude to others and to God, but as we come into the...

It’s been 12 years since St. Kateri Tekakwitha ("The Lily of the Mohawks") was declared a saint by the Catholic church, in October 2012. She was a Mohawk/Algonquin woman who lived in the late 17th century in present-day New York and Quebec, declaring herself a virgin for Christ. Her sainthood has sparked both pride and soul-searching within and beyond Canada’s First Nations. St. Kateri’s earthl...

In 2022 Saint Titus was canonized . He was killed by the Nazis among 5000 other priests and laymen in death camps. The denial of heroes and Saints is a sign of a sad loss of faith in the last 80 years.

But after the Revolution, France returned to the Church like almost never before. There were so many vocations that the Church didn’t know what to do with them. Rue du Bac, Lourdes, and Pontmain are examples of this.

You may find our episode on St. Jean Vianney interesting. Fr. Stephen Dominic Hayes in it made the observation: “One of the things that people do not appreciate about the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars was how systematically the Catholic Church was attacked during this entire period. One statistic I saw was that in a period of 20 years, Europe lost 90% of its religious. 9 out of 10 religious within 20 years. We’ve never experienced anything that bad.” www.faithfullpod.com/6-penance-prayers-and-an-incorrupt-heart/

All things are in degrees, but based on family who studied in France for modules on the Revolution, I can say the extermination of the Church was not a focus for them. The purging of clergy, the requirement of loyalty oaths, the execution of cloistered nuns…not a top-line fact in our experience. Hopefully this episode was illuminating for those of us who came to the full details later. God bless!

The extreme secularism of the revolutionaries is well enough known to anyone who has actually read about the French revolution. The whole revolutionary period was an orgy of destruction and violence, in the name of Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité. The Saints of Compiegne were a tiny subset of the thousands of clergy, religious and laity who suffered at the hands of fanatics who were later lionised by people who don't appreciate how evil the revolution was.

I thought they were already canonized years ago! As Tertulian, an early church scholar, historian, theologian once averred while watching his fellow Christians, Jews and others being slain on the bloodstained floors of the Roman Colisseum or killed on the Appian Way, "The blood of the martyrs are but the seed of the Church!" Remember when Sts Peter and Paul attempted to flee from Rome along with their sizable Christian flock and Jesus appeared to Peter heading back to where they left. "Quo vadis, Domine?" ('Where are You going, Lord?') Peter queried. And Jesus told him, "I'm going back to be crucified again!" Peter sobbed as did Paul who also beheld the vision and said, "No, Lord! Let me go in Your place instead!" Jesus told Peter, "On your return to Rome, you will be taken against your will, tortured severely and suffer the same fate as I did because I was. Be not afraid...As long as you remain faithful to Me, your reward will be far beyond price!" Paul also went alongside Peter and told the frightened flock, "If Christ be with us, who can be against us? I am certain no matter what the outcome will be, I'm truly convinced that persecution, hunger, loneliness, disease, nakedness, angels or demons, life or death, past, present, future...OR WHATEVER!! There's nothing that can separate us from the infinite, ineffible and unconditional love of God through Christ Jesus...."

@@FaithFullCatholicPodcast Thanks...and now for the other lighthearted side of me, as best described in the immortal words of St Teresa of Avila, "Deliver me from sullen-faced saints, O Lord!" I'm sure she threw that in on some of her fellow nuns in prayer...just to keep them on their toes! LOL St Paul, "Truly, my fellow brothers and sisters, we may have brought nothing into this world...and yet, brought nothing out of it!" 'Life is a cabaret, ol' chum!' as Liza Minnelli belted out in the film classic, 'Cabaret' Voltaire once said in his search for and in defense of truth in all its marvelous shapes and forms, "Indeed, I'm much fond of truth wherever I encounter it, my friend, but how I dread martyrdom...We may not always be inclined to agree to disagree, but I'm most willing to defend your cause to the death, if need be, in your absolute God-given right to say so!" You can't say Voltaire's education by the Jesuits wasn't all in vain. In the defense of the Carmelites, who suffered hardship and death by radical extremists and vice versa of an ideology of their own making gone berserk, I also think of their other confreres and sori who also had to share the Cup throughout history...and others from other religious orders and laity alike, faiths, ideals, morals and values. Their cries were never left unheard nor shall they be silenced. St Edith Stein, on the day of her arrest by the Gestapo and that of her sister Rosa, a lay helper, comforted her sister, who was obviously anxious and worried. Edith took her quietly by the and said with a smile, "Come along, Rosa, we're going for our people and being in their midst, which has been my answered prayer! Praise God!" A few years earlier, she wrote a friend how, in the cloister, how she contemplated on her fellow Jews and others who had become victims of the Nazis' so-called 'New Order' and while doing so she compared herself to Esther in the Bible, pleading her case before King Ahaserus (Xerxes) at the risk of her own life, the entire Jewish community within his empire, including her uncle Mordechai's life in her hands...And yet, as Esther, Edith knew she had a recourse to pleading her case directly from the top...the King of Kings...of whom, she added, 'is truly a great comfort to me.'

Exactly. As the Cristrtos in Mexico. These events in Catholic martyrdom have been greatly suppressed. May the martyrs of this order help bring France's conversion.

The cristeros persécution was influenced by the catholic persecutions during the french revolution like during the wars of Vendée and trust me even now there is an influence of this time in the anti christian feeling (not only catholics) in france

To gain more knowledge of Catholicism please read online "Open Letter To Confused Catholics" to sstart with, then obtain Catechism of Pope Saint Pius the Tenth, or Baltimore Catechism, Douay-Rheims Bible & study all publications. Attend Latin Mass codified & Canonised by St PIUS FIFTH. 🙏

I marvel that this is news to someone. I suppose in Protestantism it's avoided but any history of the Catholic Church or France or the Revolution has always featured these facts.

Sadly, I do think the depths of anti-Catholic bigotry have been watered down by time. My public school education focused on the purging of aristocracy but not clergy. Hopefully conversations like this help more of us not forget!

@@FaithFullCatholicPodcastI agree. As was the Nazi/Holocaust. Many of the religious faith, and clergy were killed as well. Russia, Mexico, and now in so many areas of the globe.. How will today’s persecutions look in the history taught tomorrow.

The 20th century was the greatest persecution of the Church. The Communists in Spain and Cuba, for instances, commuted horrors. I lost two family members for their devotion to the Church in both places.

Are you a priest? You said that you "celebrated Mass" so I am confused. Only priests celebrate Mass, the laity attend Mass.

      @FaithFullCatholicPodcast 16 днів тому

No, not a priest, and sorry for any confusion, thanks! I meant it in reference to the Mass as a memorial celebration. Again, sorry for any confusion! “Sunday is the day of Jesus’ resurrection. That is why, since the time of the apostles, Christians have come together on Sundays. They celebrate Holy Mass to meet Jesus: in his words and in Holy Communion” (YOUCAT For Kids, p. 130). becoming.catholic.au/s/article/The-Mass-Eucharist#:~:text=%E2%80%9CSunday%20is%20the%20day%20of,(YOUCAT%20For%20Kids%2C%20p.

We don’t attend, we participate. Also, it’s doctrine that all baptized Christians are considered Kingdom priests, as such, obligated to participate in the worship of and sacrifice to God in the Mass.
