    I have never heard the true name for what Aaron call “Kepts-but” or “K-Lock”. Don’t forget having a good selection of “Star Washers” both internal and external. These are great for restoration of older vehicle for ground as well as the positive side. The cut or dig into primer & paint someone used to spruce up their investment. I do everything but electrical is my passion. Voltage drop is my weapon of choice guys. It does not lie while the circuit is on, the lower you can get the better for everything electrical. The “Star Washer” used on the ground side will cut past rust, on frame, engine, cab, bed if a truck and tailgate if they install solenoids that call “Poppers” when they shave a handle for looks or security! The serrated nut is more commonly found on imports. I have always called the the “Secondary Lock Nuts” simply deformed nuts. They have an incredible amount of “Break Away” force required when used on the exhaust. These require a high temp anti-seize applied to the stud in this application. While large (17mm) and no straight socket access, when using an impact swivel, socket, 1/2” long extension and breaker bar to remove off the exhaust manifold, it always broke loose with such force that all wrenches hit the floor. I was always shocked that my SnapOn products did not break after picking up to examine! Just a simple case of over engineering on the Isuzu. Nissan actually placed a bead of RTV around the bell housing of the 5 speed manuals used in the Pathfinder. Why? Water would come in easy around the starter. Duuuh! But I didn’t build it, only there to fix it. I will say that Isuzu was the only company to send an engineer into each dealer to spend 3 days talking to the tech about what problems they came across or have seen. Very good video guys to review the components that are out their, names and smooth it over with just enough technical SAE or ISO discussion! The rising generation is lacking in this knowledge at tech schools because I guest-hosted 2-day classes for ACDelco in 13 different technical community colleges. Some where good to decent! I say this as the instructors have not wrenched on a vehicle since Nixon was president. They had limited knowledge on serial data systems and how they worked. I don’t care what color next years shock absorbers were, but if they contained a “Mageto Reological Fluid” developed by Delhi in the 60’s, but had no application. This was new for the 2004 Corvette guys! The fluid is like an oil with microscopic iron balls that stayed suspended for decades. Acura first used it in the front motor mount. With upshift, downshifts on a dynamometer, they simple wrote software to control the soft or firmness of the mount to make it smooth! Remember, martini shaken, not stirred! But GM’s approach was a sensor on all four corners of the suspension with reaction times of GM Local Area Network (Serial data used on high speed computers for years, like IBM’s WATSON first used to defeat a human on Jeopardy. Now an amperage sent thru two wires could change the fluids viscosity from water to 90 gear oil in 2 micro-seconds! (Ms) almost real-time dampening. It was unbelievable as I took turns driving one with 56 other ADCelco market area service managers. Way cool then, but now, almost everyone is using this technology paying per strut or car, used in stability control w/ABS. Traction control is just ABS working backwards. Guys, always great learning and review! Thanks for the efforts!

      Dean, you certainly have a lot of experience and it’s a real compliment to hear you’re enjoying the show. The nut with an assembled external tooth lock washer is called a “KEPS Nut”, which is a registered trade mark from ITW Shakeproof. The generic term frequently used is a K-Lock Nut. -Randy

    Great information via video Randy & Ed! The low viscosity after application is very misunderstood. As I stated, I grew up in a era that did not have remanufactured or built parts in a box, so we rebuilt them in-house at the shop and feel we supplied at better product because it was OEM to that vehicle simply renewed. Carburetors is a great example of low viscosity thread locker applications. I had build (Cut, heated & bent, welded) a number of carb wrenches that for imports were not made. On complete, installed, kept over night to cold start to adjust a choke opening, and final test drive, I always placed a drop only on the base stud w/nut and watched as it disappeared into the threads. It was insurance to me & a witness mark that told me it was not removed after my repair. Just an excellent review of products we never get certain info about and to use correctly. Yes, many techs applied too much as if ice cream cone on a hot day, on the bench, fingers, floor and lack of forethought into proper use, or what I always called “Best Practices.” Great review! Learning has occurred! DK, ASE master

      We’re pleased you enjoyed this video. Any time a substance such as a thread locking adhesive is added to the assembly, torque should be evaluated to compensate for the change in friction. There are many choices to choose from so seek the advice of a qualified expert to find the right adhesive or patch for your application. - Randy

    It wouldn’t be right to say the bolt is cold and it’s cold in Minnesota without having a frost imaged edge for visual effects. I got paid as a young buck to climb and repair microwave and tv towers and has an emergency up north. Wave-guide has different shapes but flexible with clamps was not uncommon. 32 mile East of Pierre, SD. in a company pickup & caterpillar battery, it was Zero air temp when I left and Zero when I got back to the hotel at night. A 300 foot guide tower had broken wave-guide bolts and blowing around inside a triangle of steel angle iron make me feel safer knowing ice clamps on guide wires and grade 8 bolts properly installed by union workers. It did not make it warmer but spit would freeze without movement on the towers leg. After all, the wind and snow was horizontal and at 12” off the ground fell 18 miles South. There was only 5 strands of barbed wire and 3 mail boxes to the North to slow down the wind. Enjoyed the video guys! Thanks. DK, Omaha

    Question; What additional markings where used on the bolts of a Ford built Jeep in WW-II? Can you guess? Bring it on and don’t google it! That’s not fair. I always took sayings from my maternal grandfather (Electrical Engineering degree) as he would; “To be fair, I refuse to enter a battle of wits, with an un-armed man.” God, I miss him still! This is a new numbering system I am hearing for the first time. Like A&N hose fittings, even re-bar as a #3 is 3/8”, #4 is 1/2” and so on. But, the world has shrunk somewhat since air cleaners had 1 qt of motor oil to protect from dirt, dust, June bugs and butterflies. Our large family farm was only 25 miles from the Capitol city, but the rural areas were last to be updated so we had a telephone the was a party line and crank on the side of rectangular wall mounted box to get the operator. Surprise, my grandmother was the operator. The beautiful oak board-desk combo and with a head set would ask to whom you wish to be connected, Eddy at the Mobile Gas Station, they pull out a weighted cord with weight, roller on wire wrapped in cotton and 1/4” plugs marked with names as the town 3.5 miles away had 120 people maybe. As close as “Mayberry” and Sarah the phone operator as you could get. Your drivers license had no photo and at age 13, it said “Farm / School” so good to go on gasoline at $0.199 cent per gallon. Yes, 19 cents plus 9th of a penny tacked on for profit! The is a nice river gun as I just hit my 50th year of buying SnapOn tools and all the pneumatic tools were Chicago Pneumatic not SnapOn and a paint gun, a Binks #7 siphon feed cost $29.00. Still have it and the receipt!

    As a vehicle with no Jeep experience but this repair needed just a little more. Sealant, 3M makes a non-hardening glassing sealant that fits a caulking gun, but, butyl tape, thin bead of black RTV or just some double side tape. I know you don’t get a lot of rain plus Jeep never put anything on it (Unless stuck to bottom of rail we couldn’t see) but it is just me. To reduce or eliminate the chance of water dripping inside past the rail or riv-nuts, I would have put something down. Question; How did you get away for 30 years of putting that off the “Honey Do” list? I need that secrete. If the washing machine doesn’t spin out completely and drain all of the water (small plug of lint type fabric) I would hear about this in 3 minutes, the five times a day until fixed! Do you hide? DK, married 40+ years!

    • @WurthIndustryNA
      @WurthIndustryNA 2 роки тому

      I did add some sealant latter to prevent noise from air leaks. I think my wife has always enjoyed the rowdiness of driving her Jeep. Even though she occasionally complained and wanted me to fix the top, she also used this issue to tell her friends just how tough she could be. Now, getting the dryer to stop squeaking has become a real issue. That’s my next project. - Randy

    Well, this reduces measuring to achieve the architectures specs and building codes, giving one trained technician a simple easy method of getting it done. As a suggestion, perhaps each tube can come with a peel & stick label to onto job site documents showing date installed, best if used by date, PSI holding power and certificate number and company info for additional concerns like “VOC’s” and hot line number for poison control if ingested. The zinc chromate conversion is used on carburetors. With changes in chemical restrictions / toxicity / etc. what used on bolts used for years, especially imports in the 70’s, commonly called “Yellow Zinc?” Was this created with the bad stuff? If I walk into a plating facility on Monday morning, they have examples on wall board for those to point to and pick “Yellow Zinc.” Question, it this coating durable or does it give up the ghost and simply fade away in a few years on a vehicles engine & body parts? Because buying new “Zinc Yellow Hexavalent” fasteners can take away points if not using OEM parts for that OEM grade at certain vehicle shows with a classic that is 55 years old. Just curious because I want the look, but the toughest finish! A brake booster Zinc Yellow plated adds to the look, but having the “Delco” stamp adds value. Please comment if the question or request needs more info! Thanks. DK, ASE master tech since 78

    • @WurthIndustryNA
      @WurthIndustryNA 2 роки тому

      As stated in this episode, fasteners have historically had hexavalent chromate applied over electroplating. This includes clear, blue, olive and yellow. With the concerns with hexavalent, the electroplating industry is moving to trivalent chromate. Unfortunately, the trivalent chromate colors do not change the corrosion resistance like we had with hexavalent. If you want a color such as yellow be aware, it’s just a dye. Many companies are adding top coat sealants over trivalent chromate to assist with scratch resistance and higher corrosion resistances. Reference ASTM F1941 and ISO 4042 for full information on this very important issue. - Randy

    That calming force can change at great deal with lightly lubricated fasteners from the factor new with a light oil, to a thick flat washer wider than most to spread the load place the hole & thread conditions. I run a tap thru every time. Painted and powder coated threaded holes see more fastener failure than any kind. And wheels studs / pins, don’t get me started on torque sticks. Nice colors, real pretty but useless. That is for toque wrenches that are re-certified by the company that made them, like SnapOn. Throw torque sticks onto a welding table, they make the coolest boat anchors. If you use rope makes difference.

    Can hydrogen penetrate glass like it does metal ? Are there any materials in which embrittlement does not occur ?

    • @WurthIndustryNA
      @WurthIndustryNA 2 роки тому

      Hi there! There are two primary aspects to consider. First is the material’s permeability, and second is the elastic or ductile nature of the material to accept internal stresses. When working with different materials, consider these two factors when concerned about hydrogen assisted cracking. It may take some testing to prove your theory on a particular product. Hope that helps! - Randy

    You spoke a little about the difficulties in dip/spin coating nyloc nuts. Can locknuts be zinc flake coated? If not, what is the suggested method of protection to pair a locknut with a Dacromet treated bolt?

    • @WurthIndustryNA
      @WurthIndustryNA 2 роки тому

      Hi Pax! Nylon Insert Locknuts require a ductile finish when properly coated before installation of the nylon ring. Zinc flake coating is too brittle. If coating an off-the-shelf nut, care has to be taken not to degrade the already inserted nylon therefore high temp cure of zinc flake coating is a concern. The best option is to utilize an electroplated nut with a high performance sealer. The zinc flake coating companies offer top-coat sealers that perform very well at low cure temperatures. Thank you for your comment! Zinc flake coatings are not readily available for retail purchase. I would recommend that you search for an applicator in your area. If you have further questions, you can reach out to us at wurthknowing@wurthindustry.com.

    Nice video. Was looking into screwing a clam shell type of assembly together from something I am 3D printing. Just wanted to seat down a servo into some ABS, but hardly knew much about screws and their terminology.

    Is this a reason why some screws can’t come in stainless steel as they burst due to hydrogen embrittlement

      Hi there! Hydrogen Embrittlement is not a concern with 300 series stainless steel fasteners. If you have any further questions, feel free to email me at wurthknowing@wurthindustry.com. - Randy

    Is the Skidmore test being performed correctly? I believe the match marking should be done after performing the initial snug tightening. The nut is then turned until the Skidmore reads the minimum required tension. A torque value is read at this tension. The nut is then rotated further to a prescribed amount of turn. The amount of turn is measured from the initial match marking.
