    For those who don't know: This type of radio is sort of double tuned. The antenna couples into one tuned system that feeds the coil on the left of the white cylinder. The rf then is coupled over to the coil on the right. This is a good way to make a radio that is both sensitive and fairly selective. When operating into a set of headphones, all of the energy to make the signal in the headphones comes from the radio waves. There is no need for a battery. The adjustment on the right is the adjustment that is tuning the right hand side coil on the white cylinder. To the left of that is the "coupling control" which is a small value variable capacitor. On the far left is the tuner that is tuning the actual antenna. Ideally you would have a second crystal detector over to the left. To tune in a station, you can move the earphone over to the antenna tuner and adjust it until you hear some muddle of stations you think may have the one you care about in it. You then move the earphone over to the right hand part and listen as you tune the right hand tuner. When you get a station fairly loud, you make a fine adjustment on the thing way over to the left to get the signal better. You then see if you can hear the station you want. If stations are too muddled together you decrease the coupling until you hear the amplitude decrease slightly and then optimize the other knobs again. You go around and around a few times.

    Lots of skill involved here, and I'm impressed. I'm just the slightest bit disappointed that neither a galena crystal/steel cat's whisker or a bit of graphite from a pencil with a Gillette razor blade wasn't used. I personally don't blame you, for I never got those those two home-made P-N junctions to work at all. I was just hoping that my betters would have some luck with them.

    • @kensmith5694

      I good way to go is to start with a 1N34 and get the radio working and then swap in the home made. This way you know that the detector is the only thing to fiddle with. BTW: Most things you buy as 1N34s aren't really that. I have worked out how to make the fake ones work.

    Interesting radio . I love this because I would be using it all day trying to figure out all of the stations that it can pick up . Do you find that there is a pattern to the frequencies and the settings that you need to set the radio to? meaning can you tune into consecutive stations one after the other , or do the frequencies come in randomly?

    • @markkinsler4333
      @markkinsler4333 Місяць тому

      They aren't random. Each radio station broadcasts on its own FCC-licensed frequency. But this radio has no electronic amplification whatsoever, so its sensitivity is quite low. Now, all radio stations are generating a signal in his antenna all at once: his equipment is really a variable band-pass filter meant to screen out all but one station, which it actually does quite well. But in his location in WV (and where's WWVA, anyway?) most signals are rather weak.

    What's the AM detector diode that you use when you built the AM crystal set receiver?

    • @markkinsler4333
      @markkinsler4333 Місяць тому

      Probably a 1n34A, an all-glass germanium diode (silicon won't really work).

    • @kensmith5694
      @kensmith5694 29 днів тому

      @@markkinsler4333 Yes if you can get them 1N34 is the way to go. I have been able to make 1N5711 Schottky diodes work. You do need a lowish value loading resistor at the crystal headphones to make them work.

  • @JAFO.
    @JAFO. 2 місяці тому

    Hey Gary, do you think you or a sharp Ham buddy could figure out which SMT diode would be removed (jumpered?) to stop the damn low modulation? I bought 4 of them and the transmit audio is so low that when we adjust the squelch & volume to hear each other just right - then somebody else comes in and blows our speakers - even a stock unmodified cobra 29 is 2-3 times louder on AM and we can't use FM because there's others in our RV club who only have AM. I'd sure like to pull that dang limiter and I can always talk further away from the mic if necessary to prevent splattering. Thank you ahead of time! 👊🤠

    I would like to suggest anybody interested in very basic radios you can build yourself with simple tools and only basic skills Google "Armstrong Crystal Radio." The little radio is as simple as the most basic crystal set, but greatly, greatly outperforms even the best and most elaborate standard crystal radio in every possible way. This little radio is based on the principles developed as early as 1911 by Edwin Armstrong and used in the radios of the early 1920's. Be sure to click on the Armstrong crystal radio when the search engine brings it up. At the website there is also instructions to convert a simple crystal set into a Armstrong radio.

    • @kensmith5694
      @kensmith5694 Місяць тому

      The Armstrong design requires a very long antenna to work. For those with less room to work in, a tuned loop antenna can be a better way to go.

    • @oldgeezerproductions
      @oldgeezerproductions Місяць тому

      @@kensmith5694 Actually, the Armstrong type detector will work well with even short antennas and so much better than does a pure crystal radio with the same length antenna. In the early 1920's many radios of this type did use large loop antennas for indoor use and they do work very well. A long wire out the window is easier to make up than winding a loop and the loop has to be part of the resonant tuned circuit which is an added difficulty. If you check out the website, there is a guestbook and a email address for any discussions.

    Hello!Good work! To implrove sensetivity - please use a MOSFET switch detector (NO batteries or power supply) may be used. For example with the BF998/.I experimented with it - I was in a willage - and I heard noises in a phone (250 Ohms) at day.I highly recommend it! In my construction there was two variable coupled coil and a small (100pF) capacitor.The selectivity was quite good in MW band.Variable inductors allows increase quality factor to maximum value (and matching high impedance of a short antenna) and as a result we have more sensetivity.

    Nice build!!! I just made a crystal set and added a #30 tube, with a tuning cap, and also includes a variometer tuning coil with a tickler coil. When I remove the 1.5 volt filament battery the set still works , but wont work with out the tube. The set regenerates nicely . So what I ended up with is a regenerative crystal radio. I ordered a 12V audio amp from Amazon and it drives a 1960s 8 ohm speaker. Strange radio, but actually works!!!!😀
