Sailing Iluka - Episode 17 - Look out, the boys are back at the Whitsundays during the Wet
Join us as we sail our Ketch from Adelaide to Darwin via the East Coast of Australia. In this Episode we travel from Darwin to Hamilton where the boat is moored during the wet season, and unpack her and go for a two day play in the Whitsundays with my good mate Harry before returning to Hammo to pack her up again for another six weeks. We show you how we pack up a boat in the tropics and hopefully give you a few tricks you can use. Its a quick trip, but it goes to prove that even in the middle of the wet, there is still plenty of fun to be had by two larrikins on a yacht in the Tropical North. I hope you enjoy....

That southerly set can be a bugger when you run into one of it's curls eh?
any ep 18?
Hi love your imput and love for it. We are looking at a ketch. And sailing from Cairns to gold coast how long would this that roughly? Regards Richard n Pennii
Bloody good cruising up north Robbie, well put together video mate. Tell you what though, shows what a pain in the neck boats can be. Gotta drop $250k for the pleasure of being an expert at diesel mechanics, rigging maintenance, hull scrubbing and anti fouling, ground tackle maintenance, self sufficient power production, water desalination/catchment and the list goes on. Almost combines the maintenance of a trailer boat, house and rural off grid property into one fun package. Makes a lot of sense to grab a decent 4wd/caravan setup and just cop the cost of diesel for a lap of Aus. Hats off to you and anyone that keeps a sizeable yacht on the water and cruising. Too bad we love the floating pricks of things right!
Been a while since last post. All good?
Biggest shark I've seen in the Whitsundays was at chalkies . 🤣✊🏼3m tiger 😳
Hi Rob! Can't wait for that next episode. Plans are well afoot to slip the dock lines on 15th Match 23 and head North!
Love your work! My wife and I are heading up north in March / Apr from Melbourne so loving your channel!
Stumbled across these videos and love them. well shot with audio picking up the waves and winches etc, feels like you're there yourself. This episode was hard to watch at the end. Sail life can turn on you at anytime, glad you made it through though.
Thanks for that Ollie, the good part about the story was that I stayed on Hamilton for seven months working as a Marine Engineer before we headed off. We are actually in Darwin now and I'm just about to put the episodes together of the last legs of our journey up to Darwin, but the fun times continue, Covid, broken rudder, all sorts of fun so I hope you enjoy these as well when they come out. Cheers
Glad you enjoyed our town and marina in Newy. 😊👍
Sure did Bruce, the highlight was the Soldier Walk thing up over the coastline, simply sensational. Cheers

Gday Robbie, As usual, great video! Can I suggest you catch up with the Shag Island Cruising Yacht Club mob whilst you’re in the Whitsunday’s. I know it takes hours to put the videos together but you provide great enjoyment to those of us following your adventures so please keep it up.
Hi Rod, Glad your enjoying the videos. We have just arrived in Darwin after four weeks from Hammo to here, so the next few videos will be all about iluka hitting the water again and a rather interesting trip across the Top of Australia. I have heaps of vision and experiences in the Whitsundays to share, so once I get the trip ones out, I plan on putting together a couple just on the Whitsundays that will hopefully encourage people to spend a bit more time in that area exploring more than just the usual spots, as there is so much to offer. Of course we will be on and about the water around here and in the Kimberly's as well over the next year so hopefully plenty of episodes on that as well. Hope you stay tuned and if your in Darwin, give us a yell, Ill take you out on the good ship Iluka for a spin. Cheers.
Hi Rob good to see all is well Great shot of us on Whitehaven beach with you!
Hi Buddy. We’ve arrived in Darwin so the next lot of videos are going to be the trip from Hammo to Darwin, but I’ve got that much footage of the Whitsundays I’m going to do a couple on my favourite places there. It was a great day when we filmed you guys so look out for that one, I’m sure you’ll feature again. Glad your enjoying the vids, they take the whole week to put together so if you like and share them as much as you can it would be greatly appreciated.. cheers
Good video but you spelt Cid harbour wrong on the caption 👍👍
Thanks Brian. Can’t change it now it’s been posted unfortunately, lucky I can sail better than I can spell. Glad your enjoying the videos. Next one we head off and start to make our way to Darwin. We arrived a couple of days ago so now have to get my act together and start to do some editing. Unfortunately it takes about 15 hours to do a 20 minute video. I do appreciate when I get comments, hope people are getting something out of them. Cheers buddy….
Well rob great to c u again, I thought u might be on the bottom some where, but any ways look forward to more like antics. Cheers
Can’t hold a good Pirate down buddy. We actually have just arrived in Darwin with the boat, got to get my act together and get the videos out, hope your enjoying them…Cheers
This brought back so many memories to me. Visiting Hamilton Island and the area the first time I was ever in Australia was a highlight and I can't wait to return. Already planning our next trip and big check that it's on our list.
Great to hear. I have so much great footage of our time there I will be putting together a couple of Episodes just on the Whitsundays sometime in the future. Next ones however will be all about going from Hammo to Darwin, a trip we just completed last week that took us a little over 20 days. I hope you enjoy them. Thanks for the comments
Looks great Rob, well done. Good tips and good to see your talent smiling… (even when he’s been sent out into the rain by Captain Bligh to look for a mooring line). 😉
Great stuff Robbie, what a job, patience and perseverance PLUS. Glad you’re finally back on the water 👍
Thanks Pete, yep, took a while but we are back having fun. Just putting the next video together now, it will b a beauty. Thanks for your support. Cheers
Great episode, very nice new friends, and they’re right, Just Get Out There, time is limited! Thanks for sharing. 😎🐬⚓️🏖🌴☀️🇦🇺
Thanks Jack. A couple of weeks and we will be heading for Darwin from Hamilton, big five week sail, looking forward to it......
Huge effort fantastic to see you on the move again just love your vids very inspirational. Cheers mate.
Hi Gerard, thanks for that, glad you are enjoying the videos, its a lot more fun watching someone else blow up gearboxes than doing it yourself (lol). Hope to see you out here with us one day. take care buddy...
Hay mate really glad your back out there , I know how expensive hamo is , it's a miricle u got it done I know how hard it is to get stuff up there without having to sell your first born , cheers now.
Thanks Barney. There is still more of the story to come as I'm still a couple of months behind with the videos. Watch this space, things are about to get interesting.. Cheers
ditto, everything has a price tag there, and help can be hard to come by, well done, amazing what you can do with some force multipliers
Good grief ! All the best mate. 👍
Non stopping us mate..Cheers
Another great episode there Mate. The scenery looks fantastic, well done on getting the boat going again.
Thanks buddy, looking for crew soon so you may have to come and join us….
Geezus Rob, what an amazing feat!!! I’ve long said, you’re the most practical dude I know - McGiver under sail. Great job!!!…and welcome back to the water. Smooth sailing to ya.
Thanks buddy, yeah, going through that once a decade is enough, glad you enjoyed, plenty more to come
It's good to find another ketch to follow. Bugger about your gearbox. We went through very similar dramas with ours a few years ago. It cost us a lost month in Bundaberg. Cheers!
Welcome aboard. Yep, the good news is we are up and going again. Hopefully have the next video out this weekend. Hope you enjoy. Cheers
Good luck bud hang in there
Hey Robbie, I thought that you are on a SAILING ketch. What is this bullshite about a motor? I bet those other swashbuckling pirates like Captain Morgan (or is that a rum) did not rely on engines. Regards, John Mac
Good to hear from you Johnny Mac, hope all is well. I have to have an engine to run my still you fool, any good pirate knows a man can’t make bourbon with sails alone. Take care buddy…..
Hi Robbie, we are so sorry to hear what you are facing. Would it be possible to sail/be towed to Airlie maybe staying on anchor waiting for the parts to come in to save a few dollars? There are two places for lift out there so you can be on the hard if need be. Is there anything we who are in Melbourne can do to support you? As an aside great to see the relationship between you and your brother. All the best, Rod and Lillian
Hi Rod, I have to confess, this was shot in August and we are all up and going again now after me working as a Marine Engineer on the island for four months saving some dollars, but that is on another episode my friend. You can’t hold a good pirate down, but you can tell him his slack and edit some more episodes so his you tube Chanel is more up to date. I promise I’ll catch up soon….cheers buddy.
Another great video. We know Hamilton well so brought back great memories. We had our syndicate boat moored at Hamilton, which we had for several years. Looking forward to the next episode. Cheers
@@hthring thanks buddy, just editing the next episode now. We get going again but it was a lesson in having faith in yourself and getting the right mechanics and engineers on your side believe me. You’ll soon see what I mean, thank you so much for following our adventures. It makes the hours of editing all worth while…
Is illuka for sale ??
Every thing is for sale my friend…
@@sailingiluka4048 sad mate
@@sailingoceandreams5267 she is my home and always surprises me what she can do and how well she looks after us no matter what we throw at her. You will see in our next episode that we have a bt of an issue, but this happened a month or two ago as we are playing catch up. She is currently moored in Hamilton Island, and we are about to get back on her and continue our adventures, but I don't want to spoil the story for you, so you will have to keep watching as the story unravels. What I can tell you is a lot of people would have given up, but we haven't. We had to take a break, but we are definitely a long way from finished. All will be revealed very soon I promise. Hope your enjoying the videos.
Magic mate so Iluka not for sale now ..
I live in Bermagui and I seen u at fisherman's wharf that's why I said g'day
Another great video , enjoying watching your progress .
Thanks Christopher, plenty more to come and the scenery up here is simply spectacular. Looking forward to sharing it with you….

HI Rob and thanks for the mooring! Maybe catch up again some day.
Hi Stephen, no worries, hopefully will definitely catch up in the future. Make sure you come over and say hello. Take care and thanks so much for watching
Keep them coming Robbie. Pete and Annie
Getting pretty good at this Robbie. Enjoyed this latest episode. Bob Woodward, Darwin.
Thanks buddy, this one only took 10 hours and three months….
Really glad to see you back in action Robbie. Sorry to hear about the gearbox and fire but looking forward to hearing more of the adventures. Rod & Lillian
Hi Rod, just adds to the adventure buddy, nothing a roll of fencing wire and some gaffa tape cant fix. Cheers
hi, just watched your latest video which was great, but you have comments disabled, maybe you dont know.
Hi Hayden, thanks for that, had it marked as made for kids but have fixed that so the comments are now open. Glad you liked the latest video. Hopefully the next one will be out real soon. Cheers and thanks for watching....
Enjoyed your video. We left Geelong yesterday and now at Philip Island East side. Heading to Refuge Cove tomorrow. 👍🍻 #sailingpopeye
Hi David, just logged in and got your message, I hope you had as much fun there as we did. Stay safe buddy....
Great to see familiar faces from Adelaide
Plenty more to come, the adventure is just beginning. Bit warmer up here and no great whites, soon be in crocodile country though, watch this space
Awesome stuff guys, great to see the journey
Glad you enjoyed it
Hi Robbie, just wondering how you are going. Hope all is well with you. Cheers, Rod & Lillian (Sapphire)
Hi guys, yeah going good. Been off the grid for a while and had all sorts of dramas but getting back on track now so the adventure can continue. UA-cam videos are way behind so going to get back into it and bring everyone up to speed. Next episode out real soon…take care
@@sailingiluka4048 so pleased to hear you’re okay Robbie. We’ve really enjoyed following your adventures. Stay well. Rod & Lill (Sapphire)
Great vid Robbie, we’re in Hervey Bay heading that same route, but not till after cyclone season. 👍
Hi Peter, we are still in the Whitsundays, and the last video was shot about nine weeks ago, so plenty more to come, just finding the time to put them together is the hard part. Glad your enjoying them, makes the effort worth while. Cheers
@@sailingiluka4048 I know where you are comfortably parked up on Hammo. We met you and Andrea on the ferry. 👍
well done, its enough to see such places and hear how happy it makes you. looking forward to see more.
Hi Hayden, thanks for your message. It takes me about eight hours to put a video together, but hopefully will have another one out by the weekend, glad your enjoying them. Cheers
We are really enjoying your UA-cam channel and hope you continue with it. Your experiences are helping us to plan our journey up the East Coast when Melbourne is out of lockdown and when we can get leave. Given that we draw about the same as you do it makes watching really interesting. Rod & Lillian - Sapphire of London
Hi Rod, glad your enjoying them. Am posting another one today as I am currently about three months behind. Some good ones coming up as we get into the Whitsundays, looking forward to see you out on the water as this is what this channel is all about, inspiring people to take the leap. Cheers
@@sailingiluka4048 Hi Again Robbie, in the Whitsundays you may like to interview a great mate of mine Ken Thackeray (Mystique) who started Shag Island Cruising Yacht Club (Shaggers). If you need a sailmaker - other great friends Charles and Megan at Doyle Sails. Just love Airlie Beach
Great video series. I felt like was on the trips with you. Keep it up (please).
Hi Norman, glad you are enjoying them. We have some great ones coming up as we go through the Whitsundays so I hope we don't disappoint.. I am just trying to get the time to put them together as I am about two months behind. Anyway another one will be out this afternoon so I hoe you enjoy. Cheers
thanks for the great video. we hope to sail oz one day soon too
Hi Hayden, plenty more videos to come as we are about two months behind at the moment, just got to get the time to edit them, but there is plenty more on the way, glad your enjoying them..
Good one Robbie and as usual great tips…….. but we don’t have a ketch…….. yet :)
Hi Peter, glad your enjoying the videos. If you want to see any particular tips on anything please let me know. Cheers
is it still out there ??
Really enjoying your travels. Can you tell me what video editing you are using, clearly very professional cheers and best wishes
Hi Darryl, welcome aboard. Glad your enjoying the Videos although we are a little behind at the moment and playing catch up. The video suite I am using is Filmora, its a pay version for a small fee, but I find it pretty easy to use even though I only use about 5% of what it can do. It takes about a day to edit up an episode so it is a bit time consuming, but a good way to fill in the day on the shitty weather days. Cheers and stay safe, plenty more videos to come.
Hello, today I subscribed to this interesting channel, I love your sailboat, it looks like the Amel, I am 58 years old, I live in Chile and I would love to sail on a sailboat like yours, I hope to continue seeing more great videos !!
Hi Jose, welcome aboard. Thank you for the kind words about our boat, she is an ex charter boat and is a real beauty. In a couple of episodes we have her out of the water for major repairs in Brisbane so you will get a good look at her, and yes, she is similar to an Amel both inside and below the waterline, but this one is Australian Made, got my patriot hat on there. Glad your enjoying the videos. there are plenty more on the way as we are currently in the Whitsundays desperately playing catch up with the editing side of things. Enjoy and stay safe, hope to see you out on the water one day.
