Watch this video of the Nilgai, or blue bull, taken during the dry season in Jhalana Leopard Reserve, Rajasthan. The Nilgai, the largest Asian antelope, is an impressive animal, with males featuring a striking blue-grey coat and females displaying a tawny-brown color. These antelopes can stand over 1.5 meters tall and weigh up to 300 kg. They are commonly found in grasslands, scrub forests, and agricultural areas across northern and central India. The ear-flapping behavior seen in this video helps the Nilgai cool down and ward off insects-essential adaptations in the harsh, dry conditions.
Jhalana Leopard Reserve, located on the outskirts of Jaipur, was officially formed as a wildlife reserve in 2016, though the area had been a protected forest long before. Covering around 20 square kilometers, it has gained recognition for its thriving population of over 30 leopards, making it one of the best locations in India for leopard sightings. Besides leopards, Jhalana is home to a variety of mammals including striped hyenas, jungle cats, desert foxes, and Indian palm civets. Birdwatchers can enjoy spotting over 200 species of birds, such as peacocks, Indian pitta, golden orioles, and raptors like the Eurasian Sparrowhawk.
