For me one of the most absurde things is that both "Killing Moon" and "Mad World" seemed to be written just for this movie, they are too on point. I find it hard to believe that they were written before.

I feel like it's so interesting how she at the beginning is trying so hard to sound deep and as if she went through a lot of feelings when she was just out of college and was living a pretty privileged life, at the start shes talking about living her life as if she was on a cage and that's right when her mom brings her food to her bed, which is so funny. I loved seeing a character like that and the film being aware of it.

Frank is Donnie's best friend more than we realise. In order for Donnie to start dating the girl he likes Frank forces Donnie to flood school with feces and not just openly approach her.

  • @atsz.

Yeah technically he didn't need to die once the tangent universe safely ended. But it could be that he didn't intentionally kill himself, and he actually didn't remember that aspect of the tangent universe. But perhaps he woke up remembering the feeling of satisfaction as to how the tangent universe played out. And without Frank there was no one to save him.

this movie was made with smart phones even without gyros, not by pro camera men, and was the same as clover field. these people think actions may be cooler when they give you a montion sickness, i watched for 50 min, couldnt watch more

Best explanation so far! But i dont understand why donnie have to die. He cuts off the turbine from the airplane and sends it through the wormhole and the tangent Universe ends. But back in the Primary Universe, the Problem must be solved or isnt? Donnie knows what happens next but he Stays in his bed, ready to die. This Motive of sacrifice runs trough the entire Story. But why? He dont Need do die. The tangent Universe dont exist anymore at this Point. He saved the Universe allready, why he cant leave his room and live on?

I have watched many explanation but still none explain it. I have boggled over this for 20 years now and ... what creates the tangent universe??? whatever creates the tangent universe is NOT the artifact... as if that was the case another tangent universe would be created whether Donnie dies or not. It would be created in every timeline as an object from the future exists in the past... Any and every explanation seems to point to a paradox as far as i can see. Given the ending, donnie dies and.... therefore he is not alive to send the engine back in time to kill himself, paradox. Without Frank, Donnie would not avoid his death in the first place. he could be the creator but he is only created as manipulated dead IF donnie lives... so donnie had to live without Frank at the very start point for it to play out where frank dies and becomes manipulated dead who then time travels to donnies past creating the loop, paradox. To me, for the paradox to be avoided the engine must not be sent back in time therefore creating the tangent universe, but that is never addressed in any explanation.

There are reality checks to see if you are dreaming or not - but how to find out if you are in a tangent universe or not? The primary universe can also be penetrated by other time lines not? Isn´t then two engines in this one too, why isn´t that causing trouble there?

My Q can anyone answer? Is the first engine that lands in primary universe from same plane that Darko's family where on or a different one? If it is the same one then how did a future plane engine get back 28 days earlier when there was not receiver to send it back? or was Donnie stuck in a loop? Because my next Q is in opening scene Donnie wakes up on the road in the hills before the apparent time tear or glitch happened. how is that so? or was he just "sleep walking" and it was a coincidence to the films story?

Thank you for the explanation: everything you said ties it all together, and I thought I understood the movie. I read The History of Time Travel and couldn't understand the categorization of people and objects -- so thank you for clarifying it. It was made clear that Donnie was brilliant; the Headmaster said his test scores were 'intimidating'. It becomes obvious that Donnie is an outlier, someone who perceives and experiences life completely different than the people around him, including, sadly, his family.
