This a project I teach to my students in my manufacturing classes mainly to use up scrap metal throughout the year. It's quick and a bit more challenging than some of the other beginner projects I use, but can usually be completed in about an hour if you have a little experience fabricating with sheet metal.

How to Make a Sheet Metal Phone Stand - Fabrication Project

This sheet metal phone stand is another great beginner sheet metal fabrication project to learn and teach a lot of basic hands on workshop skills. Should I cut metal to fall away from me or towards me taking a risk of an eye injury?

    • @shopclassbuilds

      You always want to be wearing safety glasses of some sort when you are cutting metal. I generally always cut away from my body when using hand shears. After some practice you will get the feel for where the metal might go as you're cutting and then you can angle it away from you for safety.

    I was always told not to hammer that seam edge flat but to retain the slight teardrop shaped edge. It stays straight and rigid that way. It gets wavy and flimsy when hammered flat. The hems I mean.

    • @shopclassbuilds
      @shopclassbuilds 8 місяців тому

      Interesting, I've always been taught to do it the way I showed on the video. But that would make sense as I can see how that tear drop shape would make it more rigid. I'll have to play around with it to see if I could teach it that way without just making it harder for my students to make it without a bunch of dents in their hems.

    • @shopclassbuilds

      Generally it looks better with the tabs on the outside. But it also rounds that corner off better so you don't have a sharp edge that could cut you when you move the box around.

    why is that gonna stop the necks holes stripping?

    • @shopclassbuilds
      @shopclassbuilds 8 місяців тому

      I'm not sure it would I guess. The neck plate is supposed to help relieve the stress on the holes like a washer on a nut. If you drill the holes the wrong size or use the wrong screws the neck probably won't hold either. In my class the only times this has happened with the neck is when my students forgot to use their neck plate.

    Great video. Very concise. Do you mind explaining the process of sanding and finishing sheet metal boxes?

    • @shopclassbuilds
      @shopclassbuilds 11 місяців тому

      Because the metal we use is untreated and straight from a local manufacturing plant we need to prep the metal before painting. To do that we just sand the box with 80-120 grit sand paper to remove any rust, grease, and grime. Then we run it wash it up with some water and some paper towels. Once it's dry we can apply the paint. Thanks for watching and sorry it took me so long to reply.

In the link in the description you'll find an article on this project, which has my Project Handout but that's all I've created for it at this point. Interesting project, sir. The level of tech in HS Shop class has certainly surged forward since I was a student 40+ years ago! Back in my day, the project would probably have focused on 1) using a jig to cut a circle from a glued-up board at the band saw, 2) routing a recess in the back of the wood to house the movement and rounding over the outer edge of the circle, then 3) perhaps casting numbers for the face from lead at the forge. Finally, of course, would be the finishing stage of the project, sanding by stepping through the grits, using either a wood stain or burning the wood, followed by a coat or two of an oil based urethane top coat. Applying a flock layer on the back of the clock would be the cherry on top. ;-) Take care and God Bless.

      Thanks! Yeah it has even changed a lot in the 12-13 years I've been teaching. All of this newer more advanced equipment is a bit hit or miss with my students. Some love it, some want nothing to do with it because they have to use a computer. So the old school shop class projects are definitely still around and preferred by most of my classes.
