Exploring Arizona
My wife sally, and I loved hiking around Arizona when we lived there. The clips on here are from several different place and there's more on other files. I recognize The Wind Cave trail and Picacho Peak State Park. Pichacho Peak is for advanced climbers and not children friendly as it's a long way to the top, and to drop. I selected a few of my original instrumentals for this video. Its funny, this was before go pros and cell phones that shot much better video than the $3K Sony I used here.. Enjoy, like, and subscribe....

An original I did at least 7 years ago or so. I used my Parker Night fly which I stupidly sold. I think I needed money to finish landscaping on a house in Arizona I was working on, wish I was able to keep all the gear i've had.

DOD are Darmin De'flern Lance Olsen and Paul DeSmidt the letters of our surnames make the band name. This is track eight and the Album is called A Space Anthology. This is the heaviest rock type track of the album. Again Lance did a brilliant job of arranging and adding the guitars to this one with a great drum track by Paul. The lyrics were a stream of conscious as I had a story in my mind and the words seemed to write themselves. I liked leaning into metaphors on the lyrics for this one to describe the main character. Originally however the Bounty Hunter and villain were supposed to be male. It wasn't until i started creating the video that I felt that one of the characters should be a female. Due to the story being told by the protagonist and having a male voice I was forced to make the villain a female. In my head the female villain is called Red Mantis. I felt the lyrics hit harder with this dynamic to. Lance suggested creating an concept album around a sci fi theme and we decided the album would be 10 tracks long. As we created the tracks the following criteria were nailed down to give us guide lines: Sci FI themes Combination of keyboards/synths, guitar and drums. Any vocals were to be spoken word though this does almost morph to Rap at times. The original inspiration for the vocals was Ginger Baker as suggested by Lance The album was a collection of short stories but were to be from the same universe. Tracks were to be from any genre but had to have that sci fi flavor most of the tracks have a heavy progressive sub genre attached. (for example Funk prog or jazz prog etc.) Whilst it was not set out at the beginning A Space Anthology has a heavy use of AI art. There is just not that much usable stock video of space available and the AI could be used to craft a narrative to enhance the music. At the end we felt that the Video is just as much part of the album as the music. In general Lance Olsen was the main producer as he did the mixing and mastering of all the tracks, whilst some production work wa done by Darmin De'flern. Lance Olsen was the lead guitarist, and did acoustic and bass guitars on several of the tracks. Lance Olsen also added the fx and extra percussion to the tracks. Paul DeSmidt did all the drums on these tracks. Darmin De'flern did the Vocals on the tracks along with some bass and rhythm guitar, keyboards. Darmin De'flern wrote the lyrics with some of them spinning off from Titles suggested by Lance Olsen. Darmin De'flern did all the video editing and minor video music mastering, videos where taken from www.pexels.com and the AI pictures were created on www.playgroundai.com

I liked that the villain was a female as it added unsuspecting drama into the story. One of my favorites of our ten songs....Love your voice and your talent for putting lyrics to our music.

DOD are Darmin De'flern Lance Olsen and Paul DeSmidt the letters of our surnames make the band name. This is track one and the Album is called A Space Anthology. I honestly cant remember who came up with the idea of doing a surf rock type of track. I believe it was Lance as this was created initially as an 80s style new wave type of track. Lances use of guitar really changed the flavor on this track and influenced my lyrics and song concept greatly. Unlike other tracks this was not easy to write lyrically in particular the central rap style lyrics eluded me. Finally for the second time during this album I turned to chat gpt for help with this small but important section and then re wrote it to fit in with the rest of the lyrics. I just love the synergy of the drums the electronic bass and keys and the superb surf rock style of Lances guitars just excellent in my opinion. Lance suggested creating an concept album around a sci fi theme and we decided the album would be 10 tracks long. As we created the tracks the following criteria were nailed down to give us guide lines: Sci FI themes Combination of keyboards/synths, guitar and drums. DOD are Darmin De'flern Lance Olsen and Paul DeSmidt the letters of our surnames make the band name. This is track three and the Album is called A Space Anthology. Originally written as an 80s type new wave track this was re purposed and lance took it rearranged it added the guitars and Paul came up trumps with the exceptional drums on this one. Lance was the origin of the idea for this one. He was talking about a more spiritual high fantasy/sci fi type of lyrical theme. This ended up being a story of a civilization who wanted to ascend to a higher plane of existence but had a huge hurdle to overcome with a dark enemy. The lyrics are interesting as they switch between an almost narrator style at the start and switch to more of a third person perspective as we join the warriors of this civilization regarding their tales of triamph and sacrifice. Without the collaboration between Paul Lance and I doubt that the story would ever been written. This is track six and the Album is called A Space Anthology. Boogie Night dreams is a sequel or at least directly related to Queen of New Las Vegas as the story/track takes place in Le Chic the night club owned by the queen. The Queen is referenced several times through the track and in the middle rap part of the track. The same came about after Lance Olsen did a disco type track for one of my rap tunes. I asked him to create a disco track and this was the result. The lyrics are very experimental as I wrote about 10 different sentences that rhymed with Boogie Night Dreams, I just then dropped any of the sentences in where it was appropriate in a free form manner the only structure was the rap in the middle. I did this several times and the results were different each time that's what Lance had to work with on this one. Due to the psychedelic chaotic nature of the track and lyrics I felt the same theme should be added to the video. Lance suggested creating an concept album around a sci fi theme and we decided the album would be 10 songs long. As we created the tracks the following criteria were nailed down to give us guide lines: Sci FI themes Combination of keyboards/synths, guitar and drums. DOD are Darmin De'flern Lance Olsen and Paul DeSmidt the letters of our surnames make the band name. This is track four and the Album is called A Space Anthology. Do or Die lyrics came easily to me, the difficulty was exactly how to fit them into the structure of the song. Unusually I speak over part of what would be the lead on the bridge the reason for this is that the lead was very discordant and I felt that the action part of the vocals fit in with it and added tension to a part of the track that was supposed to be dramatic and action filled. Just love the low end on this one with driving drums and the bass that Lance came up with. Vocals and lyrics were interesting as parts of the track are story parts characters issuing orders I aimed to try to get a different feel for those parts. Lance suggested creating an concept album around a sci fi theme and we decided the album would be 10 songs long. DOD are Darmin De'flern Lance Olsen and Paul DeSmidt the letters of our surnames make the band name. This is track 5 and the Album is called A Space Anthology. This track is a brilliant piece of funk by Lance and Paul. I couldn't nail down a keyboard pattern for this track. So I just let myself go and just improvised a jazzy type electric keys on this one. Lances original track name (with some tweaks) influenced me greatly on this one lyrically Lyrics seemed to write itself in a stream of conscious as I imagined the protagonist based on a combination of Shaft, Tina turner and Aretha Franklin. I started to stretch myself in spoken word on this one and deliberately used two different distinct method of voicings across the track. This is the track seven and the Album is called A Space Anthology. I would occasionally send Lance links to some of my music (and vice versa) and Lance liked my classical piano type pieces and asked me to create one but in a single time signature. Rather than create one cohesive track I wrote several tracks with varying bar lengths and Lance then brilliantly put it altogether adding his guitars with Paul adding the drums. This is the second of two instrumental tracks on the album and we really lean heavily into the AI art video to tell the story as the music is playing on this track. Lance suggested creating an concept album around a sci fi theme and we decided the album would be 10 songs long. DOD are Darmin De'flern Lance Olsen and Paul DeSmidt the letters of our surnames make the band name. This is the track three and the Album is called A Space Anthology. I fell in love with this track when Lance sent this to me complete with Paul's superb drums. I added some eerie synths and a simple synth lead line just allowing the lead guitar to soar. I felt that the track was dark and was inspired to write lyrics that almost wrote themselves in the style of Edgar Allen Poe. The main lyrical theme to this track is just a short poem. The video really fills out the rest of the theme of the track narratively in my opinion. Lance suggested creating an concept album around a sci fi theme and we decided the album would be 10 songs long. DOD are Darmin De'flern Lance Olsen and Paul DeSmidt the letters of our surnames make the band name. This is the track nine and the Album is called A Space Anthology. This track was our second track and the first time we attempted to use spoken word. Lance used the multiple vocal tracks to cleverly apply great use of the stereo space on this one. Darmin did use chat gpt to help create some lyrics based on his story ideas in order to emulate a Ginger Baker style before heavily re writing to get the lyrics exactly where we wanted them. Lance suggested creating an concept album around a sci fi theme and we decided the album would be 10 songs long. Seems not so long back we decided to work together and were already on our seventh track pretty amazing. This was originally going to be a synth wave track but I really liked what Lance did with it moving it from new wave / synth wave to a more industrial sounding track. Due to that industrial sound and based on the story's we have already told through music I though it was a good time to introduce the space marines. I love Lances Idea of a concept sci fi space album and its been really firing up my imagination. i think our different backgrounds in music is really creating something unique and exiting.

Your video SUX. You need to keep on subject, stop waving the camera around and do not say that "I ripped all of that stuff out". Write a Script for your videos and keep to them. Make then as complicated as possible to take Redundant Stuff out. Stop moving your camera back and forth.

I gave Lance and Paul a hard task on this one. Lance especially testing his production skills. I created an intro and outro with one piano track a chorus with two tracks and i believe it was 3 bridges with 3 piano tracks. Due to the fact they were in sections the piano from beginning to end wasn't one piece of music and I jumped from 3 key progression to a single key and back in the sections. What Lance did was put together with Paul was produce a complex story with the drums the guitars and bass and the subsequent arrangement. The piece spoke to me and from that inspired the story that I tried to tell through a mixture of AI art and stock footage. On both a creative and challenge level I have loved working with such talented musicians and D.O.D. are creating their own unique soundscape.

Our third track once again was a privilege and an honor to work with such talented musicians. The vibes of the song really put me in the mind of Edgar Allen Poe. I wrote that prose inspired by the music and that great poet and author. When it came to creating the video I felt that a more sympathetic creature could be used and I felt space Whales worked well. The guitar work and bass line are incredible as are the drums by Paul. The final mix and mastering was excellent (By Lance) and I am very pleased with the track.

Wonderful track to work on. loved what Lance did with my vocal tracks here some of the best production of a spatial mix that I have heard in a long time. Paul's drums just work so well. Very proud of this track and to be part of DOD. Onwards and upwards.
