Prague's Big In-Motion-Charging Buses Star at Electric Bus Conference
Prague’s new in-motion-charging (dynamic charging) electric buses were the focal point of the 7th International E-bus Conference, which took place in Prague / Praha, Czech Republic in October 2024. The battery trolleybuses run on two new eBRT (electric bus rapid transit) lines, both of which opened in 2024 - more than half a century after the city’s conventional trolleybuses were replaced with polluting fossil fuel buses.
The newest line, which runs to the airport, uses 24.7 meter-long buses that can hold 180 passengers. The new trolley wires cover about half of the lines, and the buses run on batteries for the other half.
This video features video of both eBRT lines in operation and video from the Conference tour of the eBRT lines and maintenance facility. It also includes Dr. Wolfgang Backhaus, President trolley:motion and Jan Barchanek, Transport Director, Prague Public Transit (DPP) and Vice Chair UITP Bus Committee speaking at the Conference.

Mobility scooters on bike+ lanes - Why not in Canada too?

In the Netherlands, and most of Europe, mobility scooters are part of the normal traffic on all ages and abilities (AAA) bike lanes and routes. Photos from metro Amsterdam illustrate this. But in most of Canada, mobility scooters on bike lanes are are either a legal grey area or (as some officials claim) illegal to use on bike lanes). Now, with amendments to motor vehicle acts and regulations f...

Modest size. As a Swiss citizen, I can say that Zürich is the biggest city and it's far from modest. :) Hopp Schwiiz! :)
Great place in so many ways. Would be great to see more immodest bragging about Swiss public transit. We need more Swiss people shouting 'That's not REAL transit signal priority, WE INVENTED transit signal priority - come see how it is supposed to work!'
Hello, I work in the field of driving a big bus. I travel long distances. I have enough experience in this field. I would like to work. Thank you

Need to update because of COVID
wait they make trolleybuses with poles that can be moved without getting out of the bus??? That is rad bc in Seattle if the poles come off the wires or if the buses have to reroute, the driver has to stop the bus, get out, and manually put them back up
Yep. And the same company makes the equipment for both. Would be easy to upgrade the Seattle buses and add 'rooftops' to the wires at selected stops. (Seattle's battery trolleybuses have decent battery range for running off wire).
RIP 95 BASELINE
Imagine how hard it is to drive those double articulated trolleybus
My understanding is that the first generation were tricky to drive, but that the new ones track really well are not much harder than a standard bus.

Every time I go to Ottawa I'm shocked by the number of buses on the streets... Ottawa is literally chocking under buses. Good move by the city to finally built a subway.
Despite some mild "BRT creep," this looks like one of the nicer North American systems I've seen. That makes me doubly curious about why they are apparently replacing it with a light rail system (or "light metro" system, if you like). Was LRT deemed to have better carrying capacity? Were the buses or road surface requiring too much maintenance and creating a budget drain? I would love to hear from someone who can give an informed comment on this.
For Ottawa the reason isn't just the downtown area or the system capacity isn't ready. The problem is a few bottleneck causing people just visually seeing their bus but the bus stuck behind and can't board the bus. It happens in between few stations and at nearly half of all of its stations as well. The other thing is the combined accelerate and deceleration from the bus in this rapid area just keep burning almost 30% of the total fuel for these buses. This two cost is what OC trying to do so with their LRT, honestly, my travel time would drop by least 30 minutes or more if that comes to Ottawa soon. For now during rush hour in downtown, I had to make a decision whether to walk a few block or sit on the bus and wait for that few block.
Cycling behind bus stops, mandatory in The Netherlands: ua-cam.com/video/2Pvhkx0153k/v-deo.html At a bus stop in Utrecht City: ua-cam.com/video/sSNrhqbhCVk/v-deo.html
A small piece of history here. The path that poster rode on this video from downtown through Rideau - Hurdman - St.Laurent - Cyrville Road - Blair is now a history. The entire path has been tore down for LRT development. When it re-opened again in 2018, it will certainly has a different look. This video will serve as a piece of valuable memory for some of us who commuted daily using the buses through this Transitway.
I'm still skeptical about the LRT. I can see some advantages to it but I rather like having a local bus (86 Baseline-Elmvale/Southvale) that can get me more or less door-to-door from my house (~100 metre walk to the closest bus stop) to downtown (or beyond). I'm not particularly relishing being forced to switch modes of transportation at Tunney's Pasture. I still wish Ottawa would have built a bus tunnel to connect the east and central/west parts of the Transitway.
I feel lile that they should do is put the LRT and have a local bus service along with the route so you can shave time off your commute yet still be able to arrive at where you want to
These days, since they closed all the parts of the Transitway the 86 uses and, as such, it detours along regular roads, I find I'm just avoiding taking it downtown altogether. If I gotta go downtown, I take either the 111 to Billings Bridge & switch to the 1 or 5 or I take the 86 to Carling & switch to the 14.
To build a subway roads has to close, back when I was in primary school there were barely any nonconstruction road in my city of Guangzhou, China. But just 14 years later in 2010, we have roughly 8 subway lines and now we have 16. The time for bus waiting is gone, I just need one hour to finished a distance equals Ottawa to Perth on this subway system. Before this system exist the bus would take me 3.5-5 hours depends on traffic.
I'm guessing that the small part of the transitway in Between Laurier and Campus is going to be where the light rail will enter/exit into/out of the LRT tunnel.
Nowadays, the highfloor buses are all retired, luckily, Ottawa kept 3 historic buses in their collection!
Ben, It is worth noting that the city that has probably done the most for transit priority, Zurich Switzerland, has mainly narrow road right of ways. Making space for good cycling and transit facilities is easier when you start with wide road right of ways, but it is still a matter of priorities. If the private automobile is your top priority, then you will allocate most of the road space to the private automobile.
fine when your roads are 70 yards wide!
I don't know that much about the LRT, so am not sure what to say other than it sounds like a fairly standard project. I hope it turns out well. I produced this video largely because the Ottawa BRT system is/was so unusual and misunderstood.
EcopathPlan The BRT in Ottawa was amazing. keyword was. it suited a very good purpose I just wish there was a way they could of maintained the old system and incorporated the lrt another way. thank you for this.
You didn't mention our LRT now under construction?
