Dave Ratajczak of blessed memory plays a touching part!
Years later, I still find this to be a gem of a movie.. We are all Dave.
I started out in a garage band as a self-taught drummer in the mid-60's while in high school. Then I found a professional jazz drummer - not a teacher - who took me under his wing after constant begging, taught me correctly. I never looked back and I continue to play today. This is my favorite music! The soft music, brushes and subtle voice in this video are hypnotizing! Thank you!
Nice RK snare!!
beautiful...
Great Story !
Made me tear up a little. We don’t want to be drummers, we HAVE to be drummers.
Over the years I moved away from the 9pc kit I own and instead use a 4 or 5 piece. I've also moved away from rock and now prefer easy listening and jazz. Funny how that happens to some of us.😎
As a has been drummer & manager of our band in the 70's We were mainly a wedding band made up of very young group, with myself being 17 when I started with them & I was the oldest...I can relate to the challenges that come with it...Even though we became very popular, a band consists of more than 1 person & when a band member is missing it becomes even a lot more challenges...
why weren't you brave enough to just have the drums and singing?
Was moved beyond words to watch this delight. I remember meeting/jamming with Dave, Al Weisman, Joe Martinez, Michael Randelman several times in the early 1980's at our home in River Vale, NJ. A great tribute to a great drummer.
Cool music
Wow!
i grew up in a family that listened to big band. love this.
Goodness....R.I.P. Dave Rataczjac, you truly were one of the good guys.
An absolutely beautiful story that this 52 year old drummer can relate to.
George, I missed this when it first came out. Wonderful short film!
As a jazz drummer myself, I am personally moved by this. What a fine drummer Dave was, and actor
So loved this....kinda hit the heart strings for me bc I know the emotions behind this so well
Less is more , sometimes, beautiful story, for this 74 year old drummer. Thanks for the posting!

I've watched this so many times, and it never gets old. Love it.
Heartwarming story. Nice screenwriting, camera, and prop work. Few things I noticed: I don't believe this was the intention, but I think it would be cool if "Dave" was secretly Benny Keats himself, and no one knows it, thinking BK deceased. The birthday, and obsession with BK (his own past?), drum set, and skill set all fit. Perhaps some performance gone wrong, or death/accident in the band on his conscience sidelined him. "Accountability Dave. Let it go." However, as written it seems Dave was a band member who just happened to have the same birthday and band position as the guy he idolized, or just some musician who was lucky enough to get a hold of BK's set when he passed. Maybe he played in the band as a sub, and lost his job when BK died, and his father was urging him to let go of drumming for a steady job. He can't let go. Would be a more interesting story if he was BK and something made him disappear, a heavy secret to his past, or even a big gig he never showed up to, and now he regrets not being accountable. He's not going to make that mistake again. If he idolizes BK so much and has his old set, why is he longing for a new set? If he is BK, maybe it's a new beginning, a release of past baggage? Does Dave actually go on to play with the band, or in a twist of fate does someone mug him while he stands dreamily in front of the music shop, and this was the last golden hour of the great swing artist? Language was pretty heavy...not surprised though.
Great short story!
As a 30-year veteran of wedding and dinner gigs, I found this little movie a delight. Even though all the characters are stereotypes (and purposefully so), the messages are substantial. The most important is that genuine music moves people. I really liked the pseudo-jazz-standard "Crescent Moon" and Asmeret G is outstanding. RIP Dave R - thanks for your outstanding contributions to the musical world. Bill Block - thanks for making this little gem!
R.I.P. Dave Ratajczak
very nice.
Superb. One of my children noted when he was only 7 that drums are all we need to make us dance.
Actually there is piano and saxophone hearing but not in film.
Your 7 year old child is very smart …no drums…no dancing!

A million thanks to the amazing people behind this film...:)
Though short but awesome film..my tears flowed.
I got here because Whiplash was such BS. Thank you Peter Erskine. This was quite a nice remedy. I only wish the makers accolades.
Very touching and realistic as hell. I didn't care for the "original" song or the rather mediocre singer but that aside it's much better film than the overrated and atrocious "Whiplash".
What you want to watch is Bottom Feeder Blues Drummer for another perspective. Paul Fasulo, Bottom Feeder Blues Drummer,
