Wisconsin Lighthouses: Kenosha & Racine
Back in March of 2023, we explored the lighthouses of Kenosha and Racine in South-Eastern Wisconsin along the shore of Lake Michigan.
It was a mild overcast late winter day in South-Eastern Wisconsin. Perfect to get out of hibernation and explore.
In Kenosha, we checked out the Kenosha Pierhead Lighthouse as well as the old Southport Lighthouse.
In Racine, we checked out the Reef Lighthouse, the Breakwater Light, and the old Racine Harbor Lighthouse.

Back in early 2021, we traveled to the Northwoods in search of frozen waterfalls. In the week leading up to the travel, the temps had been hovering between 20 and 30 degrees below zero. Plenty cold enough for waterfall viewing....I think. We started Northward from Kenosha and traveled the length of the state of Wisconsin up to the Land O Lakes area on Lac Vieux Desert. From our base camp just o...

Alpine Valley Resort, East Troy, Wisconsin. Winter 2022. It's like a mini Alpine winter wonderland.
I grew up in Waterford in the 60s and 70s, and moved to AZ at the age of 15 in 1977. With just a few exceptions, Main Street looks pretty much the same. I have to admit, sometimes I do miss the small town atmosphere.
I live here, I was raised here. I left for a while but I'm back. It's amazing to see how much the town has changed and grown, it was a bit of a shock when I came back and it continues to grow now. It'll always have a special place in my heart, even if I don't stay here forever.
When I was a kid in the '50s we vacationed every year at my grandparents cabins on Big Portage Lake near Land O' Lakes. Back then there was no electricity, no running water, no TV or phones at the lake. We had an out house, a pump in the kitchen for water, an ice box for cooling, an oil stove for heat and Coleman lanterns for light. It was really cool and I have such fond memories from those wonderful days.
Just got take out at Brews Pub last night. We own a home in Land O Lakes
I drive downtown there then park every 5different days walking spots w/my dog Sawyer!!
Byłem wielokrotnie, tęsknie, chciałbym móc przyjechać, Zenon Lasecki
I was born in Kenosha and believe the area by the Harbor was the Simmons mattress company, at least it was when I lived there. Thanks
good stuff. rochester and burlington are nice also.
nice job! great video and audio
i also like to explore Wisconsin .. its a beautiful state
Wausau❤
TruValue!
I used to go to Thunderbay resort every year as a kid with my dad when growing up. This was a good video giving feeling of the area and even the driving nearby. The owners of the resort at the time (late 70's and early 80's) were Dick and Fran and they had a husky named Poncho. Still have a couple baseball caps from there. Was always good fishing especially for panfish. Glad it doesn't look too different even after all this time.
Dick and Fran were the best Poncho would sleep in our cabin some times
I have a sweatshirt ❤❤❤ I loved the picnics and their grand children would always be there too
Cabin 8
Stunning video and great narration !!!
Nice calm voice. subbed 😊
A and W with a drive-in service, that brings back childhood memories. Surprised they still have one.
The Sheboygan armory
Stunning video felt so connected to Sheboygen
Excellent video. Really enjoyed it. Thanks! ❤
Gotten in so much trouble at the lakefront as a teen😂 that strip from the bandshell to the top of the hill by Mains Gardens restaurant
We've been to DC many times and have fallen into that "void" where it's off season and most of the shops are closed, or only open on weekends. We purposely go off season to avoid the mad crush of tourists, mostly from our neighbors to the south. It can actually get almost to grid lock some times.
Such a great video! thanks for sharing you experience.
Beautiful state....
It really is! Even when Google Maps takes you down un expected side roads like these.
Tripped on mushrooms at kohler state park in early eighties great times
I can't say I've done that.
Corn and brats! Sour kraut and spicy mustard!
That's for sure. By the way, I hear Brat-Days is coming back for 2024!
Is it really? And what are the dates??
nice job! not rushed at all
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it. I am thinking of heading out there and hiking another section this spring.
Don't forget the Milwaukee Pickles and the Koop"s mustard!
You Betcha!
Thank you for your 'Stellar Videos' about the Area, where I grew up in! Spent my first Quarter-Century in Superior, but now I'm retired, and living in Northern Kentucky. So impressed with everything, especially the 'Commentary Driving', which everyone appreciates! It really 'Rubs Me the Wrong Way', whenever I stumble upon a 'Driving Tour', in, and around a particular geographic area, with the sound totally turned to 'OFF', while the driver goes through various areas of a city/town, without a Single Word, as to the Who's, What's, Why's, When or Where's! Anyone can place a forward-facing dash cam against the windshield, while driving around without a Single Word, so the viewer will not only see it, but LEARN from what they see. There is No Good excuse, to the contrary! Thanks again, for one of the Very Best descriptive videos, that I have ever seen. And if you're 'Gun Shy', why not ask a friend, if they would care to have the honor of doing it, With A Voice! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Y'all, from Florence, Kentucky!
I'm glad you liked the video and it brought back memories. We all love Northern Wisconsin and Northern Minnesota. I had been many many years since I visited that particular region. Very relaxing and scenic drives.
The new javelin car
I remember cruising the streets back in High School in a friends Javelin. Lots of fun.
Amc car names coming back in the future under dodge it looks like
....The Hornet
Amc was the greatest cars and trucks of all time
I had a '79 AMC Spirit. 4.2L Inline six in a lightweight car. Great combo. We beat the living $$#! out of that car and it took every bit of it without complaining. I only wished it were an AMX.
I grew up in Sheboygan. Kinda hated it. If I wasn’t riding my bike I was getting in trouble. Not bad stuff, just dumb stuff. After getting married and moving away I grew to see what I was missing. Now I bring my kids to show and share with them everything I loved as a kid. I split from their mother cuz she was crazy. Fast forward a few years. I’m remarried to chick from Chicago and I bring her and her family up and thru love it too
We love going up there at least once a year if possible.
"Remarried to a chick" Boy buddy seems you really have the upmost respect for your wife. I'm sure your ex wasn't crazy, you just managed to bring the worst out in her. Loser
I used to backpack this place years ago. I'm 76 now an live in Texas!
Glad you enjoyed it. Hope you have the opportunity to visit again.
The Train Bridge I walked across it hundreds of times going to Skate Land or sledding at Kiwanis Park. Also the old archery park was an awesome place to BMX bike with a few trail heading down to the tracks. Don't forget the train bridge "Who do you know wants to buy a car" graffiti.
Yeah, looking back, walking that train bridge on foot probably wasn't the safest thing for us to do. Especially with that blind curve on the other side to the south. Not to mention the absence of any safety rails.
@@WisconsinTraveler A Stand By Me risk.
The USS Cobia was built in Groton, Connecticut, not in Manitowoc.
Yes, I stand corrected. That one was NOT built as one of the fleet from Manitowoc. I was questioning myself when I put the video together and only afterwards I proved myself incorrect.
This brings a Big Smile to my face when I am watching this video because I’ve done the Ferry ride to Washington Island years ago and it brings back very fond memories of my trip up to Door County ! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Glad you enjoyed it. It was a nice smooth ferry ride on that day. I've taken that ferry during rough, stormy weather days. It makes it tricky driving on and off the ferry ramps.
Beautifully done
Thanks. We get up there to Door County when we can. We got up there again in 2023. Video is still in the works. Keep an eye out for it.
i can see this place from my beach house, its a 3 mile walk
Beach house? In that area? That sounds so great!
It's very brown - brown houses brown building - BUT great food ! Lino's, Il Ritrovo, etc. Johnsons Bakery ! So good !
So good indeed.
Yup
:)
good stuff. ive always enjoyed the rustic rds. between lake geneva and burlington. thanks
Thanks. Got a few more Rustic Road videos to complete. I've just been so busy in the last 6 months. They're coming though.
Great place we are going there Sept 11 2023
Hope you made it up to Sheboygan back on Sept 11, 2023. Tell us how it was.
@@WisconsinTraveler It was great we love it there
Great to hear that.
you will very seldome see people swimming in the lake , the water is way tp cpld, seldomr see people on the beach
Have you been here in July? The beach is packed with swimmer, skiers, jet skiers, surfers and everything in between. The summer of 20 2030 feet of lake Michigan were 82°. Because we had a warm spring and super hot summer. Show much so that it heated up the lake. So unless you go to the Lakefront in the middle of December, and even then you’ll see people they’re walking their dogs and surfers in the water and you’re missing something.
Call me guilty. Yes, the water can be cold at times. But if it is sunny and in the 90's out, it's soooo refreshing.
Go to the bike track , Big Star.fountain blu, Alfreds park , Carthage college, root river mouth , go man go 🎉
Fishing in the fall at the root river mouth up the coast in Racine....yup, I've done that. Good times.
Content out at the Dragstrip ?! AMC ! Bong ! Ol hwy 31
Dragstrip it is!
Well done Grew up on.52nd st You could do a full video just on that streets history Tenutas Montgomery Wards Community Airport Zurik fittings ..Snap On Pets...
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed the video. One could almost do a video on Tenutas alone. We love shopping there from time to time....I'm overdue...Thanks for the reminder.
I enjoy your video 📸📸📸📸❤❤❤❤
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it. I always jump at the opportunity to visit Sheboygan.
I swear they all must be crazy religious, I see a church on every corner
Used to be back i by he old day. Church on every corner, and a bar between those. Lots of old churches were closed and consolidated. So I’ve seen hairstylist and salons in one church masseuse in office buildings office space in another church and still another church was made into a music space
Thanks for the tour. I was born in Kenosha Memorial Hospital and while my parents were natives, we moved to Ohio when I was born. I remember the Kenosha of the 1960s when I was a kid and spent summers in my grandmother’s house at 6208 7th Avenue. Sadly the hospital, right across the street, took her house and several of her neighbors’ and built that monstrosity of a parking garage ruining a beautiful street. My mother was both a graduate of and a teacher at Kemper Hall. My great, great grandfather John Nicoll was a founder of the Gottfredsen & Nicoll Jewelry store, right next to where you had lunch at Rustic Road. Library Park was close to my grandmother’s and I remember it well. My grandmother’s sister, Susan Swandale, married Charles C. Allen, owner of the Allen tannery, a huge part of Kenosha history now largely forgotten. They owned the magnificent house along 3rd Avenue. Two more of my great aunts (Mrs. Pettit and Mrs. Carpenter) also lived in beautiful 3rd Avenue homes. My grandfather, Henry Lundskow worked closely with his step brothers, Martin and Tony Winther when they founded Dynamatic, eventually bought by Eaton Corp. I think you even drove by Henry’s old, brown house at 75th and 21st. I can’t believe it’s been nearly 45 years since I was there.
I'm glad the video stirred up memories from the past. Hope you get a chance to visit after all these years.
@@WisconsinTraveler Thanks. I hope I see it again someday too, although I'm a long way off in Maryland. Coincidentally, my daughter just told me that she's visiting Chicago this year and plans on checking out Kenosha. Just a few hours ago I saw the new UA-cam video, "Unearthing the Past..." by Discover Wisconsin. My daughter nearly studied paleontology and is looking forward to visiting the museum in Kenosha.
Sounds like fun for your daughter. Hope she has a good time. I'll have to check out that Discover Wisconsin video as well. Thanks.
Thanks, u did a grand job😊
Thanks. It was a fun daytrip. Since that trip, I made it back to the area again and explored around near Superstition Mountain. I am puting together a video of that soon.
