A quick descriptive tour of a knitting machine, what it is, what it does, how it works. Silver Reed machines were formerly known as Studio, Singer, Knitmaster, Empisal, but they are all the same thing. The drum punchcard mechanism works in the same way on all the different models so - learn one and you’ve learned them all.

Переглядів 10 тис.3 роки тому
The Silver Reed machines are all supplied with the handy “rulers”, or scales, which enable you to very accurately measure your gauge, providing the swatch has always been knitted to the same stitch and row parameters. The mid gauge machine comes with a yellow scale, and this video covers how to knit and measure the swatch.

Can you share how to create cards from the motifs in the book?
It is explained in the video. I mark the pattern or motif that I want to punch on the card using the marker pen, then punch it out.
I mean thats way longer than latchooking them because youre doing the same one off and also dragging the carriage back and forth.
@@serendipidus8482 I did say it’s not quick! But it’s another option.
@@sallybutcherskalamundakrafts you actually said it doesn't take any longer than latchooking. That's why I commented that it is longer.
Hello Sally please please please will you tell me why the yarn gets tangled in brushes. I have got plastic but brushes protrude slightly. I am a new machine knitter and have had machine for a few weeks. Thank you for any help you give
Honestly? it’s a beginner thing and will go away as you improve. Your overhead tension could be slightly off so that the yarn slackens off then catches, your yarn could be a bit fluffy, the brushes could have a wonky bristle or two. Try to get into the habit of holding the yarn above the carriage just as you start to knit the row, to stop it looping. You can also use the yarn separators (Silver Reed only) which will keep the yarn travelling through the arm instead of underneath it.
should I use ravel cord instead of waste yarn? why or why not? thank you!
You could, but you don’t need to. Ravel cord is useful in separating two sections of knitting without unravelling one of them. I use it mostly on the bottom end of the work, as unravelling knitting from the bottom up doesn’t work.
Hi Sally. I'm been follow following your tutorials for punchcards, tensions etc. Ive brought a KL 116 knit leader for my chunky machine kh260. Can you help as i haven't got the 1-24 gauge rulers for the machine. 😢 Any help would be welcome xx
Sorry Joan, I don’t use Brother machines and never use a knitleader. If you’re in the U.K. try contacting Andrea at Andee Knits as she carries stock of a lot of spares
Thank you Sally
Grand! Thanks.
Hi. Is this the finest size available? Can this be used with the Royal Loom weaving attachment?
Hi, no it’s not the finest gauge. This is a standard gauge machine with 4.5mm needle spacing, and this is the gauge you need for the Loom attachment. There used to be a fine gauge manufactured, 3.6mm but they are quite rare and sought after.
where do you get the 10 cm. i have knit exactly as you describe in another video and my measurements is exactly like yours. but i don't understand the 10 cm part because if i measure my 'swatch it gives me 14x15 cm?
Don’t measure your swatch with a ruler! The green scale calculates the EQUIVALENT number of stitches and rows per 10cm. But that’s not the number of rows and stitches that you knitted so of course it won’t measure 10x10cm.
Thank you! I just had 450 rows unravel. I wish I could have found this video before I took it off. Obviously I’m a complete rookie
Great video Sally! Thanks!
Absolutely brilliant! Thank you so much!
Anyone know what could be causing dropped stitches on a LK150. Any suggestions would really be appreciated.
Sometimes you can get dropped stitches if one of your latches is closed when the carriage goes across, you can also get them when you have a break in your yarn, or you have some static when using synthetic yarns. Another reason can be your weights, if you have too much, or too little weight your stitches can drop, especially at the edges. I start with claw weights at the edges and every few inches along the bottom and move them after about 2-3 inches of knitting has been done. I hope this helps you a bit.
Is it in the same place? If so, could be a damaged needle. If random, could be insufficient weight
Thank you so much! This was definitely a big help!!
Thank you!
Sally do you do any videos on how to use a KR11 knit radar for the lk-150 it would be great because you explain so so clearly thank you x x
Sorry Margaret, I don’t ever use a Knitradar.

Это действительно лучшее видео по вязанию мотива. Спасибо.
Thankyou for this simple and clear video Sally!
20 years ago I spent most of the time only doing Knitweave because it is so beautiful. I learnt from Audrey Palmer who has unfortunately passed away . She wrote a very comprehensive book called Create with Knitweave and if one is lucky her books are sometimes available. Once set up knitweaving can be fast as the weft yarn is threaded through the tension guide , so no weaving off the floor. . Knitweave stretches sideways but is firm in the length eg skirts don’t dip but give around the hips. Most of her designs are created sideways on the machine. The effects are fabulous.
Thanx for an amazing informative video. I have my mom's Empisal model 260K . is there any punch cards available for this model and where do you buy blank punch cards? I would really appreciate any information regarding the punch cards
I believe this is a standard gauge machine, so any Silver Reed (now the global name for Empisal/Knitmaster, Singer and Studio) 24 stitch punchcards will work on it. You can also use other Brands such as Brother with the exception of lace. Just remember the start number is marked differently. Any machine dealer should have blank cards, you can also get them from EBay and Amazon.
This is the first time I have understood wrapping and short row. You are an excellent teacher, thanks very much.
Thank you.
I'm in the US. What is the US equivalent of "white spirit"? Rubbing alcohol? Isopropyl alcohol?
That was very very helpful. Thank you!
Grazie Sally sei bravissima, sai spiegare molto bene e semplicemente tutti i passaggi no Ei tuoi video. ❤
Please can you help Sally. When I first started knitting I didn't put the yarn in the top tension properly and I could knit a lot of rows this way. Now I have correctly put tension right the carriage gets stuck a lot. Why is this? Thank you
Thank you so much Sally for explaining everything so well. I've had weeks of untangling yarns
Thank you for such good videos, I learn so much from watching them
I love your videos ♥
Where exactly do I find a copy of the tension sheet for different rulers?
it is available via Facebook on the Machine Knitting Beginners and Returners Circle
@@sallybutcherskalamundakrafts Thank you.
Hi. Thank you for the information. Where do I buy a new sponge bar? I have a singer 580. Its nearly the same as your machine. Could you send a link to buy a new sponge bar please. Regards Carol
It depends where you are located.
@@sallybutcherskalamundakrafts Victoria Australia 😄
@@carolcook8029 sorry, I’m not familiar with suppliers in Australia. Try googling for a Silver Reed supplier - there is someone called Susan Glaus who supplies parts. Or EBay.

Essa cartela de losangos é o meu terror! Não transfere um ponto aqui e ali, e o desenho nunca sai perfeito
Thank you. It is very interesting. I wish I could get started instead of it tangling underneath. Can't wait to get started
How do you tension the carriage opening ? Thank you
You don’t. The yarn is held in tension by the overhead mast. You need to adjust the dial on the mast assembly so that the yarn is held in a shallow arc, like a D on its side.
Thank you! Can you pls make a video on how to save dropped stitches? I’ve gotten into some right messes before

Thanks for this video!! Do you have any plans/ interest in doing a similar video but for making lace punch cards?
I haven’t thought about lace because they are not as straightforward as cards for other stitch patterns, and I have very little knowledge about how the Brother lace carriage system works, so my input wouid be limited to Silver Reed. There is a website called Needles of Steel and I am just in the process of submitting all the additional Silver Reed lace card sets to their archive, which - together with the basic card sets - will create a library of over 50 lace patterns.
Hi Sally, I am presently casting off 200 stitches on my 360 and this works so well. Thank you soooo much for sharing it.
Hi there, I just wanted to ask what model and brand is the double bed machine you're using? And could you please advise me on where I can purchase a new one :)
It’s a Silver Reed SK280 and SRP60N ribber. I recommend you buy from a Silver Reed dealer. In the U.K. I use Andee Knits. She does ship overseas, but you might find a dealer nearer to you via Google if you’re abroad.
@@sallybutcherskalamundakrafts Okay, thank you so much for your response! Love your content btw❤
dank je voor de mooie uitleg ,Sally.Na het zien van al je video's kunnen we oefenen !!

Hello, does anyone know where I could find SR155 ribber for a reasonable price? The ones on ebay are extremely expensive at the moment :(
It’s because they are rare, and rarity drives the price. They haven’t made the ribber for many years and many chunky owners back in the day didn’t bother with one as hand knitting chunky trims isn’t anything like as tedious as doing them in 4 ply, so there aren’t as many out there in the second hand market.
Combien ,coûte la machines à tricoter occasions 150
It’s not really possible to give an exact reply as it depends on condition and location. In the U.K. I would expect it to be approx. £150-250 GBP
Is it possible for me to print out the conversion factor document please

Why not just take a picture with your mobile phone and zoom in or send the picture to your computer for an even better view.
Love your videos. Only discovered recently.
Thank you for this helpful video. Is it possible to clip, say, about three sections of punchcard together to make one card of several sections? For instance, if I make a bunch of small cards with just one fairisle pattern of between 6 and 12 rows each, and then join them together in different combinations? Or would it be better to just make a few full length (or 36-40+) cards and just exchange each one midway through when I want to use a band or pattern that I've put on another card? If the latter, how easy is it to change cards midway through, given that you can't see the row that has just knit or is just about to because the last bit of the pattern you can see going in to knit is five rows above what's about to be knit?
Sally, thanks for these wonderful videos on LK150 which is the machine I first used. Now cuz I need to use finer yarns, I switch to an older model Brother KH588. I wonder if you'd advise the gauge swatch on a standard gauge. Is it 60 stitches and 60 rows main yarn with the 21st stitch on either side of 0 being marked? Thanks so much in advance for clarifying.
60 stitches is the minimum, I usually cast on 70 stitches. Knit 60 rows and mark the 21st stitch either side. You need the green scale for a standard gauge.
@@sallybutcherskalamundakrafts Ok, great. Much appreciated!
Hi Sally, Thank YOU for these videos, they are very well shown and explained. I haven't been at my machine for quite sometime and these will be great for me to get started again. And the ravel cord!! I love these tips for use I have never seen. And will put that to use. I have a question on the e-wrap and e-wrap with waste yarn. Is there a reason I would chose one over the other? They both seem the same type of edge? Is that correct? I may have missed something.
They are the same kind of edge. Knitting waste yarn first just provides an area of stability for the knitting, and somewhere to add weights. For a small piece of stockinet I might not bother with it, but for wide pieces, or items where I’m going to move straight into pattern knitting, I definitely would add the waste yarn. And for the lace carriage, a good piece of waste is a must.
Thank you. For transferring a pattern from a magazine why start at the bottom of the card, rather than row 1?
This is explained in the video. The row marked 1 on the side of the card isn’t the first row being read by the card reader inside the machine. There is either a 5 row or 7 row difference depending on which brand of machine you use. Think about it. If you feed the card into the machine until row 1 is indicated, and you’ve punched your first pattern row alongside it, and you can still see that row, it isn’t down inside the machine being read by the patterning mechanism.
