Winter Spring Identification
Переглядів 18811 років тому
Just a quick video showing 3 different springs in the winter when they can be identified by their running water. I don't recommend drinking any water without purifying it first. Sorry about the video quality I took it on my phone while the battery was dying and it was only 10 degrees F outside. Enjoy!

How to build a Debris Hut for shelter and survival using techniques I learned at Tom Brown Jr.'s Tracker School in New Jersey. This shelter was built in January 2012 in Foster, Rhode Island. I'd love to hear from others who have built shelters. I am always looking to learn new shelter building techniques.

I have memories from when I was just a kid in the 1950's of my mom meeting the train in the middle of the night, well after midnight, headed for Montreal where she caught another train south to Plattsburg, NY to visit her relatives. I can still recall waiting inside the depot for the train to come along.

I have been by it many times! As a boy, on fishing trips with my Dad and brothers, and as an adult, on "Sunday rides" with my wife and family. I am sorry to relate, however, I have yet to visit the building even once. I will make an attempt to do just that, maybe this summer. You might recognize me as I will be wearing my Maine Central Railroad hat!

Looks pretty good. I would encourage a bit more fore thought as to placement. That branch you built under isn't where I'd want to be if you're riding out a storm. You don't get to pick the weather you're surviving in.

I looked this up because I bought an antique trunk with a worn ticket on the bottom that said Greenville Junction, Me. Trunk was from (and made in) Baltimore. Mrs. E.M. Staub. As an aside, I’ve spent many hours restoring an old building. If helpful, you can look at the ten or so videos on UA-cam, “Church to House Conversion, Thornton, TX”.

I intuitively started building a little south west facing lean to the last time I had a solo camp on my Apple River island. But i didn't think to keep going beyond just a basic positioned frame. Thanks for the inspiration! Next time I'm out there, I'm going to work on something I could winter camp inside of.

I see you used a little bit of twine on your door plug, instead of using just a pile of debris try to make a hatch with a twine hinge with thick small sticks attached and then put the debris on. Its a lot warmer.

try making a square door. something that is less likely to blow away. Also dig a hole in the shelter so you can be level with the ground so if any wind does get in it wont hit you as much. dig a trench around your shelter so when it rains the water will drain faster.

I'm not sure that any railroad would want anyone walking across a trestle or bridge. I believe it's against the law to do so.

I'm sure you are correct and could not argue either point. Still, it was a great day spent not watching TV, playing video games, or wasting time watching UA-cam videos.
