Widening Circles
"Widening Circles" composed by Jason Moore
Performed by MeHim (shoutout, cicadas!)
MeHim ( @MeHimBand ) are @MikeHolstein and @JasonJamesMoore
I live my life in widening circles
that reach out across the world.
I may not complete this last one
but I give myself to it.
I circle around God, around the primordial tower.
I’ve been circling for thousands of years
and I still don’t know: am I a falcon,
a storm, or a great song?

Immunization 3/22/21
Переглядів 923 роки тому
Here I am improvising in the new rig and finding my way for all to see. I love this stuff. Even when it doesn't work. Practicing is kind of like getting a vaccine. It doesn't guarantee you'll avoid mistake or misfortune, but hopefully it diminishes the chances.

How I use a tuner for saxophone practice.

Here are some strategies to using a tuner in your saxophone practice. After making this video, I thought of several other things that I'd like to say about playing in tune. I'll probably follow up with something soon. Does your saxophone speak an octave too high? Try this!
Переглядів 3,9 тис.3 роки тому
This is a simple exercise that I learned from one of Joe Allard's students. Mr. Allard called this 2 to 1 (2nd partial to fundamental). Try this if your notes have been speaking higher than you intend them to, or just as a tone building exercise. Sometimes, we have to approach the saxophone as a machine that wants certain things. It's not terribly musical, but it will help us to be so in the fu...

Simple Saxophone Articulation Exercise
Переглядів 2083 роки тому
Here's a great exercise that I use in my own practice, and with my students. The idea behind it is to position all of our different articulations along a spectrum from more - less sensitive. We start by touching the reed, but not stopping it. Impeding but not interrupting. We increase our tongue's influence on the reed over time. Try this for a while and let me know how it changes the way you i...
Losing Focus isn't failure FB

Here's an excerpt from a recent lesson with one of my students. Maybe you'll relate. Give yourself permission. Losing focus isn't a failure. Losing it implies that you had it, and that you're building your ability to exist in that space. Sick! The journey never ends, and needing to see something all the way through with extensive practice in order to self-validate leaves us vulnerable to self j...
Practicing and Improvising in the FX rig

Staying Connected to the Tune

Thank you very much, Adam. How long have you played?
Thank you bro
You're welcome! Lmk how I can help 😁
this is really coming in helpful. i have college auditions in 4 days and this is the only scale i'm having troubles with!!!
How did the audition go?! I'm just seeing this.

thank you sir.
You are most welcome!
So helpful! Thank you very much!
You're very welcome! I'm glad you got something from it :)
Helps me so much. Thanks.
Happy to help!
Hi! So whenever I do mine (I just switched) it’s only the D that comes out high..the e and F are fine it’s just D- any tips?
thanks I was having trouble with this one. this vid helped me alot😀
Glad I could help! Let me know if you run into any other problems!
Interesting to learn that this is a problem common to many clarinet players. I'm having this problem too and had formerly played clarinet.
Oh most definitely. The voicing (volume/shape of the cavity inside the mouth and throat) is a good bit smaller on clarinet. I'm generalizing for comment brevity but that's the gist.
You have very useful videos. Just starting saxophone and you're giving tips that I couldn't find on other beginner lessons
Happy to hear that! Thank you for watching. Let me know how I can help.
I play saxophone
Me too! 🤪
@@JasonJamesMoore 😂😂😂😂
Thank you very much! I've been playing alto sax for a while but now as a sophomore in HS I've gotten a lot more involved by joining band at my school and this really helped me how to play overtones!
Rock on! Let me know if there's anything else I can do to help.
How is this F concert?
Because the fingering for D on an alto saxophone produces a concert F pitch (F on a piano). Let me know if there's anything I can do to help!
@@JasonJamesMoore I was looking how to transpose in F concert. Is it the same as D scale?
@@antoniofauxuci174 yes, the concert F major scale is the D major scale on alto saxophone.
i just switched from clarinet to alto saxophone and my notes are still coming out too high, even after i try these exercises. do you have any other tips?
Yes! Long story short, keep it up with these exercises. Coming from clarinet, it is very likely that you are voicing too high. watch my whole playlist on tone production. It's a bit nerdy, but the ideas there will almost surely help. Best of luck!
Tysm tysm tysm!!!!!!!
Hey! You're welcome. Let me know how else I can help!!
I can't thank you enough. just not too long ago I made the switch from clarinet to alto saxophone, and I have not been able to play any low notes AT ALL. after you described the singing part of it, and the warm-up, I've been able to play worry-free. Thank you so much!!
I am so happy to read this! I have been so busy that I missed your comment. How has your playing been going?
lol I’m also a clarinet trying out alto sax
Thank you! This really helped!!
I'm so happy that it did!
Amazing 🎷🎷🎷
Thank you for listening!
wow will try tomorrow
How did it go?
Cool

thanks.. total noob here at anything reed. got some good theory background tho. your vid helped a lot.
Glad to hear it, Steven. Please let me know how I can help. I plan to remake the videos in my tone production playlist, but be sure to have a look at those if you're playing some saxophone. It's the most important thing!
@@JasonJamesMoore will do. my grandfather recently gave me his saxophones. Two tenors and an alto. He played in the national gard I think in the late 40’s early 50’s. The silver tenor has an all metal mouthpiece which I’ve been using. The metal mouthpiece with the brass tenor. Musical context... i’ve just been playing along by ear with ‘Canon in D’, and a version of ‘Marriage d’Amour’. I’m finding some sweet silky tones but not consistently. Also, have found if the neck strap is too long it’s hard to get anything decent out of it. anyway, going thru all the noob growing pains. I’ve only had them a few weeks.
I love this story. Please reach out if there's anything I can do to help. Most of my time is spent teaching privately. If you get to that point, give me a shout as well!
@@JasonJamesMoore looking forward to a chromatic scale too if it fits in your lesson plan.
Thx
Do you know this tune? Would love to hear you play it.

I struggle playing low note it doesn’t come out right
Is it all notes below a certain one, or just one specific note? When you attempt to play it, what sound comes out instead? I ask because your answer will help me to give you better advice.
This helps a lot, thank you 😃
You're very welcome, Nae. Let me know how else I can help. Check out the rest of the channel. I've got these videos for every key.
Great video. I do recommend that you smile more because I was confused why you looked so sad. Thanks for the help!
Thanks for the feedback. I definitely have resting sad/pensive face. Glad you are enjoying the material. How long have you played?
My man looks sad.
I was born with this face. Resting sad face!
This is a great presentation for new saxophone players. I have had a tenor saxophone for about 2 1/2 to 3 weeks. This is what I really needed it. Thank you so much.
Kip, that was my goal! Thanks so much for watching. Please let me know how I can help. Make sure to check out the playlist on tone production.
Thanks so much sir, for school i gotta play 3 scales and 1 sheet of music, i can play the sheet and only 2 scales this helped with 1 of the scales, however i CAN'T play the chromatic scale, i have to learn by today and submit it, thanks for making it 3/4 instead of 2/4
Oh! I'm just seeing your comment. Thanks for using the videos! I'm sorry I didn't see this sooner. Yes, I should make a chromatic scale video.
Sir.. your teaching is nice.. I understand clearly
