Defending the Panasonic GH6
Переглядів 4,3 тис.9 місяців тому
The GH6 was released over a year ago to the fanfair and buzz you might expect from any flagship camera. But as sensor issues started to surface, it quickly faded into camera obscurity. But I'm here to defend panasonic's flagship m43 video-centric camera as the perfect iteration to my beloved GH line of cameras, even in spite of it's flaws. The Only 2 Lenses You Need... For M43 (this part is for SEO) At this point the Lumix 12-35mm and 35-100mm Vario lenses are a thing of legends, but for some reason nobody is talking about them anymore. Ever since the Leica 10-25 1.7 and 25-50 1.7 were released you'd be forgiven thinking they were the only lenses to exist natively on the Panasonic M43 system. And maybe if I had one I would feel t...

This was a great video. Appreciate the wholesomeness of it. Cheers. Subbed
Hey thanks dude! 👊
You da real MVP Thank you!
I shoot live theatre, concerts, and dance shows. I shoot with two GH5Mk2’s and a GH6. The GH6 I use for closeups. I have a 2 TB CF Express card so I record 5.7K ProRes internally. Not only do I get a backup I also get the opportunity to punch in a little closer if I like. All my cameras record 4K ProRes through Atomos Ninja V’s and do an internal back up.
This is great thanks!!!
I prefer the sigma just for the low light for sure, but like you i mostly keep the 12-35 on my gh6 just because they work great together
Hi Mike , what are your AF settings ? Thanks, Frans
With you having children, if you have the financial ability, you should consider moving up out of that Class C, and into a mid sized Class A. It will be a bit more stable and safe on the Road, and give you plenty more room for the kids to play.
Thanks Kevin, I appreciate the suggestiom. We actually recently upgraded to a trailer - we like to be able to drop the trailer and then use the tow vehicle to get around.
There was a great used GH-6 deal that I circled for about 3 months...and just couldn't pull the trigger...Mostly because I got sick of waiting for a GH5 replacement and I already bought an S5 the year before.. which works for me-- lesser IBIS not withstanding. I just feel a replacement with phase detect is on the way. I have some regrets not jumping in...especially since I have much better glass for MFT. I'll watch for your further adventures.
Hey Clint, thanks for the follow. I'm still loving the gh6 for all it can do - but autofocus is certainly not one of those things - Although it's really not that bad if the lighting is good 🍻
You don't have to open up the XR controller to badger it, do you? I don't think you do
Nope you shouldn't, unless you break your hall sensor pins in the process... that's what I did...
Why not just drive there? You'd get everything done much quicker
It's just a little quad trail, a bit tight for a full size.
Gracias, llevaba días buscando una solución!!!
The GH6 really is superb, it gets more use than my A7Sii and various canons (all with PDAF btw). Day I bought the GH6 I flicked it to MF and pretty much left it there, also use several vintage lens on it too. For gimbal work the G9ii will deffo be a better option. But tbh I tend to use the tiny dji pocket 3 for gimbal stuff now, it’s surprising how good that thing is. The only negative for myself GH6 wise is the price of CF express cards :’( oh and it is battery thirsty too like very thirsty 😂 I class the GH6 as a Cine camera rather than a Mirrorless/Dslr type and knew what I was buying 2 years ago. I think some went from a Dslr to this and weeped at the AF, I researched what I was buying first and boy am I happy it’s superb. I think the GH7 will be far more noob friendly though when released so many are maybe better to wait for that.
I agree, I have no desire to upgrade as it gives me what I need. I'll even use the autofocus with good results if I have decent lighting - it's a huge step up from my GH5!
We need spiked wheels, then it should work
Yeah, had spiked wheels in my xr this season and it worked pretty ok - not as good as snowboarding, but way cheaper 🤣
At my previous job I had a GH5. At my new job I have an FX3 and FX6. In so many ways it feels like a downgrade. I want to work with the GH line again so badly 🥲I mean come on man, the FX3 doesn't have open gate, only histogram for exposure, and image stabilisation that honestly is barely usable in my opinion. Yes the image that comes out of it is great, but for the price it's a really limited camera.
I really appreciate your comment - I've never owned a Sony but it seems the whole industry has decided they're the best. All I can tell you is the gh6 is a substantial upgrade to the gh5. The image just makes me smile :)
I'm glad I found this video because I was almost regretting buying the GH6.
No way! There's too many haters that have no clue. Thanks for stopping by!
That was very helpful.
Awesome! Glad to help.
Yeah, I think you missed something. The 35-100 is parfocal and internal zoom, right? Both awesome features.
True! The internal zoom is great 👍
Price
I paid $1750 CAD!
How dyu remember which button for which setting?
Comes with time. But the only buttons that change are the front buttons. Basically it depends on whether the lens is manual or if the frame rate is over 120 - otherwise everything else stays the same.
Mic is a little hot in this video, not sure what happened
I know - it's so annoying, but I didn't have time to re-do it. Had to settle for "good enough" even though it hurts so bad!!
how much did you end up selling for if you mind me asking? :)
Same as we paid for it $1,600. Steel of a deal! But it had issues...
@@MikeErickson gotcha, thanks for responding ❤️
You're the best Mike. Truly one of my favourite youtube channels, thank you for being awesome
Garet! So pleased to see your comment! I appreciate the nice words 🙏
Pretty cool! Did you install those studs?
Yep, they just screw in, pretty easy, just takes time
Thanks - that's what I was looking for!
Glad to help!
Good list. #5 is debatable but that’s all good.
Operation Winter One Wheel! I love to see it. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Jeremy!
March 24th? Released on January 27th? Been hanging onto this video for a while, eh Edit: guess I should have just kept watching, lol
Yep, I was pretty defeated last year after that ride. Kinda fell off a creative cliff and never ended up editing it. Feels good to finally get it done. Thanks for watching!
So much progress here! Love it! No one was thinking of riding in the snow 4 years ago and now look at this.
Right!? The evolution continues. I learned a lot from this whole process - the biggest thing being how much easier it is to waterproof a GT over an XR! Say what you will about FM, these things are built really well.
Wow that was so cool! Love the production quality
Thanks man!
Dope vid, keep up the grind and you’ll deff make it 😅
It was difficult to keep track of all the studs in that video. Great job, and it's pretty smart as Karen's and police can't say shit because you're technically sailing!
Picture this: Sherman with ice racing studs, @landocycle in the parallel tracking shot (gimbal with 200mm lens for max parallax), "come sail away" playing while the sun sets on the lake - could happen...
You need some "It's cold outside, but my ambitions are warm." merch. ;)
You're right! I should get on that. Cheers dude 🍻
mine also bricks from the cold as well. I had to tape hand warmers to the battery box lol.
Good idea!
Silicon heaters are good!
What's wrong with audio?
I blew it out at the source - did my best to save it but it was unsalvageable. I didnt have time to fix it, so I'm challenging myself to be ok with good enough.
I got one of the blue treaded vegas and still haven't mounted its so stiff im probably going to go with a tfl or hoosier ounce my blue vega slick is wore out XR fo life Float On brother
Just spent the summer on the hoosier whisper and loved it - I basically use my XR as my park board now and I use my GT as the trail shredder.
@@MikeErickson same basically I'm building a growler for my shredder my XR gonna be my flagship for longer travels and chill days ...
I have the GH6. Its the best video camera I've had, spent an arm and a leg for it though. Got it a few months after it came out. Like always, always new tech coming out all the time.
You forgot best skin tones of any Lumix..and AF works in good light!
Good points!
I think what hurt the GH6 in comparison to the G9-II the most is not AF, it's the DR-Boost at low ISO. I used the GH6 since it came out and are now using the G9-II. Not having to decide between lower ISO and DR-Boost with very high ISO is worth a lot. I also don't use ProRes a lot, so for me, the G9-II is the better option. Right now, the GH6 is still better in cases where the camera needs to run reliable for a long time and when the All-I codecs are used internally. For the next years, I think the G9-II will remain to be the slightly smaller option for hybrid shooters and there will be an updated GH6 with everything the G9-II has improved and more.
If the g9ii had shutter angle I would be a lot more interested in it, but I do agree it has a better DR boost implementation.
@@MikeErickson The G9-II has shutter angle. It has more or less everything the GH6 has. It just can't run for ever and needs the SSD for everything above 600mbps.
@Ulrich.Bierwisch aw what! Damn, was still trying to hold onto the small advantages, seems like there's only two - internal hi-bit rate and a fan for long record sessions - possibly better colors skin tones (based on the reviews I've watched).
Great camera!!! , thank you for the video!!
Hey Mike, thanks for the video. I find it amazing that a camera with the specs of the GH6 should need any defending. Clearly, had it included the better AF, and an earlier fix to the streaking issue (has that been fixed even now?) then the camera would have been hailed as the best new mini cinema cam over the past 18 months. And this would be despite it having MFT sensor as everyone is moving to FF. But, it got a couple of things wrong, and had bad timing on one or two others, and we get a great camera with an unreasonable target on its back.
Nope, the streaking issue still exists but it really depends on you're shooting style on whether it will be a problem or not. I'm mostly shooting outdoors or in a controlled lighting environment and haven't had any issues yet - but I can make the streaks show up if I try.
Love the GH6 and the egronimics that you get out of this camera! And haha love my little cameo too haha! Great video mate, I don't know if it was on my end but it seemed like your audio was just a little to hot and felt like it was peaking throughout the video. But that could have just been me too. I would suggest if you are recording direct into camera to turn down the camera preamps as much as possible. And let the microphone to the heavy lifting! But again love the video, the audio just was hard to listen too with the peaking. Love to see more videos like this from you mate!
Hey thanks Matthew - I definitely had the mic gain turned up too much in the first half of the video. One of those things that's going to bug me till the end of time, but 'good enough' to publish and keep moving forward (I'm sure you're familiar with the feeling!). Love you're videos! I watched all of them before finally deciding to pick up the gh6 last month.
Great video. I have a GX85, GH5, G9, and G9II. That being said G9II has almost all the same features as the GH6 even shutter angle. It does not have dual iso, built in fan, or faster media cards but you can use external ssd. G9II has pretty good continuous Phase Detect.
Yep, we've all got our eyes on the g9ii - but I'm a big fan of the internal prores HQ in 4K, for me it matters more than the autofocus - although I also know how convenient it would be to have functional AF.
Great review. Yes, minus the streaking issue which you can just use another camera, Its just such a feature rich camera and is so easy to use. Anytime I'm shooting with other camera operators with different brands they are always shocked at what the GH6 can do that their cameras can't for double, triple the price.
About the only weakness of the GH6 that people have identified is the autofocus. I just got my GH6 and I have done 6 paid gigs. I found the autofocus rock solid until the lights get really dim but if you use the focus limiter it is flawless.
only weakness ? It's a sensor so poorly designed for low light handling, you have no latitude of iso when working in log. It gets noisy as soon as you leave native iso. Don't get me started on the "dynamic boost" that i find extremeley useless and locks you in 2000 iso mini, i much much prefer working with a cheaper S1. Dual iso is such a breeze to work with, and i prefer that at everything the gh6 has to offer. Image first, everithing else second
@@lucasvivante8988 I don’t know what you are doing to get noise in your footage. I shoot live theatre, concerts and dance shows and I have no problem with noise.
I use the M12 stuff! Heated clothing is the future!
I agree! I used the jacket recently while I was sick laying on the couch. Still felt like shit, but it sure helped my comfort!
I just got a 1975 can't wait try it out
Yes! We actually sold ours a few years ago but I miss it. We had some great times in that thing.
The GH6 and G9ii are the best handheld cameras in the business, and there isn't even any close competition. Not even something as nice as the FX3 is as good handheld. It has terrible IBIS, no exposure tools, limited custom buttons.. Ultimately I did move on to the G9ii, but I respect anyone who truly understands the value of the GH6. It's a camera for people who want to go outside and make stuff!
I've definitely got my eye on the g9ii, but for now I'm thoroughly enjoying my time with the GH6. I'm also trying to remind myself that a new camera won't improve my story-telling - but it's really hard not to desire the latest and greatest in this profession.
The GH6 is that sort of camera, the more you use it, the more you like it. I use or have used most Panasonic cameras and the colors/skin tones are the best I've seen with the GH6. Even the G9II is not as good. I sold the GH6 before buying the G9II but I bought it back. The improved AF is nice, but I just prefer the GH6 image.
Bought it back! Haven't heard that one before. It's funny, the gh6 has overwhelmingly positive comments from its user base, but the exact opposite from the UA-cam 'influencer' community. I suppose it comes down to different expectations - some want something you can pick up and point at things and let the autofocus do the work, and others are more concerned with composition and image quality. I'm definitely in the latter group - image quality trumps autofocus.
@@MikeErickson Exactly !
I like the GH6 and I used it a lot but I had an hard time to love it at first because of weird issues : - In 5.8K Open Gate, the AF pulses a lot more than the GH5 with most lenses. - In 4K,C4K and 5,7K, the AFC accuracy is very bad when using low frame rate (<48fps). It looks ok, but when viewing the image at 1:1, the image is out of focus. - The 5,7K has finer details than 4K and C4K but the the IBIS is slightly worse, and much worse when using Open Gate. Also, the 5,7K crops a bit more than C4K. - 4K and C4K have almost zero moiré because of the Intelligent detail filter, but in the same time some very fine details are not as good as the GH5, again when viewing at 1:1. - No I-dynamic because of the bad shadow noise when DR BOOST is not ON (below ISO 800). This function is nice when you don't want to edit your videos a lot. My G9II has the I-dynamic back, certainely because the DR is better at low ISO.
I did notice the crappy stabilization in open gate, but so far I've been quite happy with the overall image quality (been shooting mostly prores 422 24). Grading VLog compared to the gh5 is also far superior. I am curious about the g9ii though, will have to check it out once the hype dies down a bit.
@@MikeErickson Yes the image quality is great, the colors and skin tones are really good. In my opinion, better than my G9II.
Just subbed!! Pleaseeee more gh6 content. Maybe a video of how you choose to set your customs C1-C4 😊
Hey, thanks for the support Roger! For sure, I'll add that to the list! 🍻
I made you're video request! ua-cam.com/video/d3WRBqKFz7s/v-deo.html
yooooooo... literally perfect timing. This was one of my plans this weekend is to set up settings. THANK YOU!! Going to check it out as soon as i get the chance!!!!! @@MikeErickson
I really like that you can power this over USB-C and if you accidentally pull the cable or your power bank dies, it will switch to the internal battery. This is the same as on my GH5 ii. I have been using ProRes for many years. I bought two of the original Atomos Ninjas. Now I have three Ninja Vs, a Ninja Blade and a Samurai Blade. I love ProRes because it is easy to edit and I can use inexpensive SSD storage. Shooting with 2 GH5s, a GH5 ii, and a GH6 means that in addition to the ProRes I can have internal back ups in 10 bit.
I picked up a dummy battery (kondor blue) and will be trying out the vmount with ssd setup - not even sure if you can do both yet!
I’ve used the Kondor Blue with SSD set up with my A camera (I have two GH6’s) for several months now and I couldn’t be happier. I shoot mostly corporate interviews and instructional videos and can go hours without swapping batteries or using a USB-C. That being said, having the option to use a USB-C to power either of my cameras is awesome.
