"The Overworked and the Underpaid" was Boulevard Video Productions 1998 Holiday Video, that they gave out to party planners and venue managers. My dear friends David Robin and Jay Stein were brilliant in these. They are sorely missed. I had nothing to do with the production of these videos. It was all shot and edited by Boulevard Video Productions. I only transferred the VHS copies I was recent...

This is the memorial video I did for my dear friend Jay Stein's memorial service held on August 5, 2024. Do to legal issues with two of the Beatles songs in the original version, UA-cam pulled it down. I think Jay would have approved the music I chose to replace it. Rest in peace Jay. This is a Space X, Falcon 9 rocket that took off from Vandenberg SFB, as seen from my front yard on May 9, 2024. This was the first time I tried to record a launch. Now that I know what to expect, I'll do a better job next time. I got a couple decent shots, one with a zoom.

Marc Franklin checks out the latest Premiere Pro audio post "Essential Sound" updates at NAB 2024. We discuss new ways to fix sound in Premiere Pro, without needing to go to Audition. Unfortunately, the camera person didn't realize my mic cut out after my introduction, so I did the best I could with the interviewee's mic and Adobe Premiere's "essential sound" features.

Most of the video was shot with the Canon XF605 when I was reviewing it, but life happened and I didn't finish shooting it, and had to give the camera back to Canon. I finally finished it off 14 months later, with the Canon XC10, and during the day instead of night so they don't match so well, but lets face it...

ein frage bitte ,habe vor doese hyperdeck hd plus kaufen und möchte gleichzeitig mit zwei Videos signale aufnehmen würde das gehen . Vielen dank
No, the Hyperdeck Studio only records one stream at a time. Look at some of Blackmagic Designs mini switchers that can record each individual camera input and the mix.
Thank you Marc. Beautifully done.
does this mdeol have TBC ?
It was an optional board for this model. Mine didn't have the board. I use an external TBC.
I've been looking for a VS video between the 605 and 705. Great review and helped me with my decision.
The XF705 has been discontinued as of about last March. The only ones available are left over stock and used. Good luck with the new camera!
fuck canon...
Well that's pretty insightful!
Was 3 Ninjas Kick Back also filmed in Oak Park? I know parts were filmed in Japan, but there are some US locations that nobody has ever been able to pinpoint.
I don't know. It wasn't on our list of movies shot in Oak Park.
My 1506 wont record the input audio from "line in". I can monitor source on deck and the meters reflect input. I cleaned and demagnetized head tried different tape ..no luck. When I play the record tape back, if I pot the volume way up I can faintly hear the source recording.
Hi Marc. I am having an issue with my 1506 that is driving me nuts....can you recommend a service tech to trouble shoot?? thank you
Hi Robert, I haven't taken it in for service. The only thing I have ever needed to do for it was clean the heads and tape path. what issue are you having? Marc
Great tip with the Tascam XLR unit and 4 inputs. Thank you for the review.
nice nostalgic camcorder 'video' look in this interview, missing the good old days of harsh highlights, low dynamic range, poor palette of colors, plastic skin tones, glorious 8-bit mpeg-4 compression, 480p SD and 1080i HD resolution
That's so cool. I spent so much time around there.
Surprised it works without replacing capacitors .
I grew up in Agoura in the early 70's. I miss those wonderful. days. Thanks for the video, it brought back lots of good memories.
I remember using a couple of JVC BR-S800E (PAL) machines, they were fitted with the RS422 9pin control so they could run alongside a Digital Betacam to make simultaneous VHS copies. I'm assuming the BR-S500 is the play only version of the 800 as it looks very similar. Not sure if it could playback LP (8 hour) recordings, I only ever used it once to transfer VHS to BetacamSP connected via a Sony BVT-800P TBC.
Yes, the S500 was the player only version. I have an S800 that needs repair, but as I don't do recording, players are fine for me. The RS-422 was one of many option boards these decks could take. They also had options such as TBC, SMPTE Timecode, NR, and a couple others. I believe the PAL versions do play LP speed. The SLP speed was the reason I got it. I have better decks that play SP.
I've got a Sony VO-9800P and being a PAL machine it can playback 3 formats (Low, High and SP) but it can only record High and SP depending on the tape stock. The only series 9 model capable of recording PAL Low Band is the VO-9600P which is switchable on the front.
In NTSC, we only have Umatic and Umatic SP. We don't have low and High band.
I have the PAL version of this Hi-8, but the head drum keeps seizing up if it's not used for a long time. I always have to remove the lid and check the head moves before trying a tape otherwise it chews it up.
Sounds like it needs some lubrication.
Did the 500 play slp as hoped for, SP also. I'm looking into getting the jvc BRS800u, like the option of recording on S. I have had the jvc BRS525 & 822 DXU decks for years, now need caps. Thanks for your time, nice videos
My 500 needed caps also. Luckily I got it from a place that had a "semi- warranty" and cost me $100 to have the whole machine recapped.
@@FVPMMF Thanks for your response, I value it, we do a great deal of archiving, Florida based. My JVC BRS 525 & 822 DXU Decks, as great as they are, I have been told to recap video alone could be very high in $ cost. Who did the recapping for you? Again thanks for your time & expertise
@@mlluke7506 the recycling / resell place I get some of my gear did it.
Did you ever compared the sdi outputs with another cameras? We have 3 canon xf605 but we are not happy with it. The image output is too flat and the colors are washed out compared to other cameras like Sony NX200, Panasonic hc x20. I looked all the settings and tried different cp's but no luck. Do you have any tips or tricks to improve image output of this camera?
Sounds like. you are recording in C-Log - record in 4k 10bit 4:2:2 mp4 and use started picture profile - it should look great - certainly mine does.
Love your vids Marc!
Wow, that's a great one, I'd love to have it.
Can you compare the jvc BR S500u with the Panasonic AG1980 for play back?
The BR-S500 / 800 are generally far superior than the AG-1980. These JVCs have a more heavy duty mechanism. The AG-1980s do have a couple features better than the BR-S500 / 800 series. The AG-1980s have a built in time base stabilizer (a stripped down TBC) that can be very useful when digitizing. These JVC decks could have one as an optional plug in board, that not many people bought. I use an external TBC. The AG-1980 also plays back the LP / 4 hour speed, that the JVCs cannot in the NTSC world. It all depends on how many LP tapes you get, and if you have a TBC to run it through.
I have 2 1980's & they play 3 speeds SP EP & SLP. We to convert many types of tapes, from Betamax, Umatic to Digital Beta & others, thanks for your response.
In your video you state the 500 plays SLP, have you found it does not? Thanks for your time
@@mlluke7506 It plays SLP on the NTSC version. PAL versions I have heard do LP (PAL countries it was their "6 hour speed") as they only had few decks with SLP that gave them 9 hours on a standard E-180. It was added late in the VHS VCR life in Europe. The US version, unfortunately, doesn't play the LP speed, as most people used SP or SLP.
Is there a way to power the unit externally via DC?
Yes. It comes with a 12v AC adapter. You can see the 12v port at about 2:00 min
What about an external battery pack via 12V port? In situations where there is no power port next to me and I am worried that the external battery that I can connect the unit to might fall off like it did in your video? Thanks!@@FVPMMF
@@asafblasbergvideographer The 12v battery input gives you a lot of options. You can run it off a car or other 12v portable battery. You may need to buy or make a custom cable, but it is not difficult. I have done it for other field equipment. You can also use gaffers tape in the batteries that go on the back.
Beautiful, thank you !!@@FVPMMF
Excellent video thanks Marc
Can the JVC BR S800u also play slp tapes, thanks for your time
Yes, it plays SLP / EP also. It is in the description. It plays those tapes very well.
Thanks. Might you know what error 56s in a jvc BR S 800U means?
@@mlluke7506 I'm afraid not. I will ask around and post the answer is I find out.
The error code revised to 332@@FVPMMF
This is a great review and I bought the XF605 after reading your review in Streaming Media. I’m very happy with the image quality, versatility and ease of use of this camcorder. After filming several years with DSLR cameras, it’s a real relief to have everything in one device. It’s not the same cinematic bokeh, but it’s so much more fun to work with!
I'm glad you liked the review and find the camera as useful as I did! One day I hope to get one myself, (unless the XF805 comes out and is better!) Make sure to subscribe and check out my other reviews.
Thanks for the video. So the Teranex Express accepts a standard definition signal, which passes through to the Hyperdeck Studio Plus? That's what I'm hearing anyway. Or is some other device needed in the mix? Maybe I should just ask what your specific workflow is for converting SD to HD. We also have a Sony 9800 U-matic SP deck. Thanks.
If you have a digital deck with SDI out you can go SDI Directly into the Teranex then into the Hyperdeck Studio Plus. For Umatic, I go composite into a TBC. From the TBC I go YC into a BMD Analog to SDI (audio goes directly from the deck to converter), and SDI into the Teranex. Then SDI into the Hyperdeck Studio Plus
Yikes, a lot of steps. Thank you.
@@EastRiverElectric1 If you want to do it correctly, you need to follow the steps. If you don't have an analog to SDI converter, you can use a digital deck that has analog inputs and SDI outputs, like DVCAM, Digital Betacam, and some DVC Pro Decks
Great video
What else would you like to see reviewed?
Great video. Liked & subscribed the channel.
That thing is massive! Lol love stuff like this.
Mid size deck. My AG -7650 is much bigger.
Great video Marc!
The worst camera ever produced by Canon. Auto Focus works randomly and, in most cases, there is no image stabilization.
I generally used manual focus, but when I did use AF, it worked fine for me. Image stabilization was good for me, except on tripod, the camcorder would keep moving after you stopped panning. Maybe your XF605 has issues. Ask Canon.
@@FVPMMF "the camcorder keeps moving after you stop panning" tell you. With or without a tripod, it's normal. I observe this too. It's the proof that I pushed the right buttons and that the stabilizer is trying to work. But it just can't do it. The slightest movement of my hand makes the image jump as if there were no stabilization.
Try taking it for service. It sounds like a malfunction.
Hı UA-cam open button click and authorization failed why? help
Hi Muhammed - I only had the camera for reviewing it. I haven't had it for a couple of years, and unfortunately can't help you with your issue. I would look up your local JVC tech support line and give them a call.
Thank you.
hola podías poner toda configuración que llevas en la 605 gracias
Are you talking in the menu or the external things like microphones and lights?
so it was YOUR review that I read when I was looking at the article on the 605. I'm looking at getting this camera, because I've finally;y started seeing the. advantages of having a high end ENG camera as part of my toolkit. It's gonna take. awhile to save up, but I think it will be worth it. Appreciate your legacy and love of the craft.
Thank you for your feedback. I'm glad you found it useful.
Get the remote and go to the menu and disable the OSD, so the tracking is not displayed.
Thank you for this review. I've composed my shots through the viewfinder for 40 years, but heard some say the EVF on the 605 is hard to see. Have you any thoughts on this? Thank you Sir.
I used the LCD screen most of the time. The few times I used the viewfinder I didn't find it an issue. It worked fine for me. It has a lever below it to adjust for different people's eyes.
Marc, could you kindly share your picture profile settings please?
I didn't do anything special. I shot rec709, and switched between manual and auto white balance outdoors Iris was manual. I will look up to see if I had anything else set differently.
As I suspected, the picture profile was BT.709 Normal.
Omg 😮

I always wanted to see old footage/photos of this area of Oak Park. There is basically no record of it before the advent of Google Maps. So, thank you for sharing.
I still have this exact unit. It’s hit and miss weather it will properly load a tape but when it does it works fine
Try lubing it and loosening the screw holding the elevator in by a half turn.
@@FVPMMF thank you, what do you recommend for lube? 3in1 light oil?
@@TonyVRailfanning I have used white lithium grease from an auto parts store, lock oil and dripless oil.

My pleasure!
How do I activate shutters to manual mode?
I'm afraid I can't help you with that. JVC only gave me the camera for a short time for the review. I don't have it to look at. Please try JVC's tech support. They should know.
