Replace Destroyed Pop Up Canopy
Hey guys - did a real quick swap out of the pop up canopy we put over the swing the other day.
Sadly, this one collected a bunch of rain water that caused it to collapse - finishing off damage that had occurred several years ago.
Yep, this time instead of aluminum tubing simply bending - parts actually broke off.
For fans of shorter videos - this will hopefully hit the sweet spot!

Candied Back Ribs Nov 2024
Переглядів 702 години тому
Rib recipe from Grilling While Armed from Mark Walters, the host of Armed American Radio. This is the second time I've tried to make a video about this recipe. There's much room for improvement on the production side - but I hope you will be able to get some good "takeaways" from this video. As always - if you have comments or suggestions - please add them. They are very welcome and appreciated.
Managing Leaves - Fall 2024
Переглядів 8912 годин тому
First day of this activity. Get leaves off the lawns and either mulch them or just move them to a different place. Back yard - off the sod lawn from last year and off the newly seeded lawn from this late summer. Front yard - clear off the driveway (again!) and get the maple leaves off the grass, such as it currently is. They will likely be moved to the back yard.
Lawn Fence and Clearing Corn
Переглядів 3314 годин тому
Two tasks today - get the grass/weeds on the lawn fence side of the path between the lawn and garden plus removing the corn stalks from the garden. Out of all the stalks - there was 1 REALLY NICE ear of corn - that Brenda gave me with my dinner! It was really good! All the rest were partially eaten by critters. Both tasks completed - video edited and now posted! It was a good day.
Planter Bricks Update
Переглядів 101День тому
Today's project attempts three goals - 1. Make the space between planter bed lining bricks wide enough for the tractor. 2. Re-level the bricks on the "flax and grass" planter that were pushed down by the tractor and 3. Try something different to "make more space" around Iris bed 2. I think all three were met. What do you think about the vertical bricks? Yes - No?
Bunny proof Gates
Переглядів 29День тому
We don't want bunnies in our back yard. So in an effort to make access (or escape!) more difficult, I decided to put some hard materials under the gates that access the back yard. Bricks under the gate by the house and re-purposed back patio pavers under the gate used to get machines between the front and back yards. As I say in the video - it's "a first approximation!" meaning either or both g...
Front Yard Planters 1

Yes - it is in fact some more weeding - this time though we're out in the front yard around the Iris and Sweet Williams planter beds. The first bed, I call "Grass and Flax" is shown toward the end of "Backyard Buttercups Days 9 to 11 East Side" starting at 8:24. I think the audio cleaning took out a VERY annoying sound coming from the neighbor's house across the street. A high-ish pitched fan n...
Backyard Buttercups Days 9 to 11 Garden Fence DONE

Hey folks - this is a compilation of 3 days' work. First day, worked about 1/3 down the east side. Second day, even with a short rain delay - finished the rest of the east side. It got DARK! Third day - wanted to finish the raking/grading before afternoon rain AND we were going on a trip up to a REALLY nice pet store in Snohomish, so I was a bit rushed. So you get to see the completed "garden f...
Backyard Buttercups Day 7 and 8 East side
Переглядів 4021 день тому
Between rain delays and a day in the front yard - the east side of the garden fence/blocks actually took about 5 days - but this will be shown in 2 videos. This video has the beginning of the outside. Then I skipped a day finishing the north end of the out side. Stay tuned - we should be done in a video or two! Thanks for coming to join us in our journey on UA-cam.

Having 5 gigantic silver maple and one russian birch trees in my yard, I easily have 50 times the leaves you do. I'm very happy my landscapers will be here any minute to remove this week's accumulation. Thanks for the effective use of time lapse; made the video more watchable.
Thanks Dubi. I may have landed on an approach for producing these videos. Oh, and Brenda said she wants your leaves!!!
good job the yard looks great! you should consider adding a beehive to your property.
I just read your comment to my wife who said, "I know, I've already thought about it!" I agree. The extra pollinators would certainly help the gardens. Thanks for the comment.
Don’t change the name!!!
Thank you Suzie!! Yeah, Brenda likes it too!!
I love your videos. I look forward to seeing new ones.
I'll do the best I can to continue to improve the quality and production level as I learn more. Thanks for your kind comments.
I'd caulk the borders of all the wood paneling, too.
Thank you for the comment and your great suggestion. I should get on that before the weather gets too cold.
Hello I have the same greenhouse what did u cut your frame ? The book says wrong measurements.
Hi Jennifer - thank you so much for your comment. Wow - that was so many months ago - I needed to get the manual back out to get the data to answer your question!! If I'm understanding you correctly, you're asking about the dimensions for the frame I made - that I used re-purposed old treated 4x4 fence posts for. (We had a new fence put in and I saved the original posts after cutting off the concrete....) Our greenhouse was the "2.05 m (6.7 ft) x 2.4 m (7.86 ft) model # YM12842X" Please also note: During our build - I found that I wanted to make spare copies of certain pages of the manual - so instead of actually "copying" the pages, I went to the Yardistry website and downloaded the manual for the model of greenhouse. Much to my dismay we found several differences between the printed version supplied with the kit and the on-line version. I used the following sentence on page 7, "The recommended area for site preparation is 92" L x 75 1/2" W (2.337m L x 1.918m W) for this structure." The printed version said, "7.67' L x 6.29' W (2.34m L x 1.92m W)" So, the outside dimensions I made the base were 92" x 75 1/2". And it fits nicely. Since "4x4" lumber is actually 3 1/2" x 3 1/2", and I wanted the "front" edge of the base to be a solid piece, I made the frame so the long sides fit inside the front and back ends. Therefore - the front and back were cut to 75 1/2" and the sides were cut to 95" - 7" = 88" My video shows that I incorrectly placed the back right corner - throwing everything off! Does this help? As you've seen I can get quite wordy - for which I apologize - but I strive for accuracy. Please - any other questions about what we did, please continue the dialog.
My least favorite job is to pull weeds. I no longer can do that so I hire that job out. Charlie looks like he would be fun to have around. I'm curious what your plan is to prevent weeds regrowing.
Hey Dubiloo - thanks for the comment. Charlie IS fun to have around! He loves to play - but that's when he's not sleeping or looking out the window wondering when mom's coming home!! As for the pernicious weeds - my (current!) main plan is to eradicate them as thoroughly as possible - getting as much root structure as I can. Secondly - we are going to add more mulch which should a) choke some of them out and if not then b) they are likely to be much easier to pull. Since the area around the garden fence has already had at least one layer of landscape fabric that they just grew right through - it doesn't seem to be a solution. But as always, I try things and wait to see what is most effective. And that's where I stand right now. Next year, I want to see where I've done work and see what appears to be most effective and do more of that. The other factor I can't ignore is: although currently in pretty good shape - the years are adding up so I don't know how many more "experiments" I will be able to do!! We'll see.
That’s PERFECT Martin. Wonderful job you just did and it only took you 3 days! You have a good sense of humour! Keep in touch my friend.
Thank you for another encouraging comment. You know what my primary takeaway from this video series is? Don't get behind on weeding!!! Our hope is next season a) I won't lose 4 months to shoulder surgery recovery and b) to get a little done nearly daily. And as that holds true for gardening, it probably also applies to YT videos too :-).
Like 4 here Brother Martin! Mr. Garry stopping by with FULL SUPPORT!
Thanks so much for your kind comment Mr. Garry! We continue to be amazed folks are coming in board. Let's see where this goes!!

Thank you very much! As I'm learning about UA-cam, video production and editing, it's very nice to hear that it is being enjoyed.
Greenhouse looks nice.. Good job.
Thank you for your compliment. We're really happy with how it turned out too. It's use over winter and into next spring will be a new series of videos.
Hi
Well Hi back!
You’re working too hard for being retired!! 😅😅
Haha Suzie!! You're right. But I realized last year that I "traded a full time job in the office for one in the yard!!" Well, my goal is to figure out how to get video of different activities. Thank you for your comment; we both had a chuckle.
The sweet william is a biennial so it will flower next year and will probably just keep reseeding itself if you are lucky. The bananas look amazing.
Good to know about the sweet william. We were talking about the bananas and if we want them to spread more or to grow taller. We will be giving them one of the frames we used over the blueberries to build a shelter from the cold this winter. We'll see how that goes.
Yikes those mounds look like gophers. Mom has some in her frontyard, I assume when Brenda gets her raised beds that you are going to line the bottom with hardware cloth to deter your moles, voles and gophers.
Hi Debbie. Thanks for your comment. Brenda reminds me that we have nearly zero critters burrowing inside the garden. And she said the hardware cloth is prohibitively expensive. The garden area (inside the cinder blocks) has a double layer of landscape fabric, plus each of the planters are also lined. We do in fact have a bunch of mounds in the lawn areas - but not so much in the vegetable garden.
Great work 👌👌👌❤ Watching you from India your new friend🎉stay connected
Hi and welcome to the channel! I appreciate your compliment very much. Let's hope more content you will enjoy is coming up.
It's great when yard "work" is fun.
Dubi - you are completely SPOT ON!!! It's also a huge plus when my wife recognizes the need for proper tools to get the jobs done! SHE'S the one who recommended we go shopping for the tractor!!!
Going 4x6 gives plenty of room for matching it up to be square.
Thank you for your comment. In full disclosure - one of the reasons I gave my wife for concern for building her a greenhouse from plans or scratch is I was PETRIFIED about somehow, some way goofing up LEVEL or SQUARE! So getting this kit seemed to assuage my fears enough that she got it. Mind you, it was purchased just after my shoulder surgery so it was MONTHS before we started the project. In any case, this video shows how "confidently" I did the base WRONG!! Haha! Jokes on me! Honestly, it wasn't until well into the project that I was poking around the Yardistry website and found their greenhouses were available in several sizes. We just happened to get this one because it was available at Costco.
What a pair of great people! - we enjoyed watching you guys as you did this project in a good pace and allowed us to absorb if not all of your work but pretty much most. You inspired us so much that just bought the same greenhouse from Costco. Currently completing the foundation. Today we took an inventory and nothing is missing BUT there are a few pieces (like the door posts) that are quite bowed/bent/warped. A couple other pieces have cracks (near pilot holes) that most likely will propagate and present issues down the road. Of course that happens with any type of wood (not super surprised) but will have to wait a couple weeks for replacements. THANK you for the great work and video - helped us a LOT !
My wife and I were truly blessed by your encouraging comment! I kinda misted up a bit when reading it to her! One major takeaway for me from your comment is going to be - going forward, that if I'm doing a project with lots of steps, like building something, that I need to think of it differently. Currently, I have much of a "this is what happened" approach - documenting the activity. There will be times in the future where I may need to be more intentional about HOW to do something - or at least what worked for us. And even though I mentioned it in one or more of the videos - we too gained a great deal of insight for certain steps of the process by watching videos from both Yardistry as well as YT contributors like us. We both hope your project goes well.
Creeping buttercup, you have to get rid of the roots.
Thanks Debbie. Brenda confirmed that too after I shot that video. It sure seemed to me to be the right approach. We'll see what that area does next year.
Loved your videos and the fact that you left in the struggles and mistakes. I’d rather have a video from someone who would make the same mistakes as me versus a perfect build that isn’t realistic.
Thank you Thomas!! My goal with this channel is to show WHAT happened; not a "How to...." Your comment is greatly appreciated.
While you are doing cooking how about exploring grain free in addition to gluten free
Thanks for the suggestion Debbie, we'll look into it.
Explore why the buttercup like to grow there and change the conditions. Buttercup like overly damp/ wet ground sp if you find a way to drain the area you will find the buttercup will die out. Good luck
What a great suggestion! Change their environment!
Just use roundup. Roundup works by leaf contact, and doesn’t contaminate the soil. You can plant grass seed the next day
Round-up is carcinogenic, no one should use it.
I hear ya Skip. I have a feeling that won't fly with Brenda, but it's a valid suggestion. Thanks.
Wow how is your back yard so big
It's just the lot we got 30+ years ago. Just under 0.7 acre.
@@martinleif2872 wow😲🧐
Just to put a few numbers to it - the backyard is essentially 135' by about 80'. We put the big vegetable garden in a few years ago - it's around 100' by about 40'. There are videos on the channel about the vegetable garden that address all of what my wife was growing this year. I apologize if I misunderstood your initial question. Take care.
I thought you would have some tips on how to remove those tiresome buttercups! I have them in bed among other plants. Very difficult to get out.!
Thank you so much for your comment/question. There are two possible "tips" I can provide. First, we are covering most of the yard in mulch to make things like weeding easier. Second, the "potato rake" as my wife called it, makes getting under the buttercups and loosening the roots from the soil really quite easy. I'm pretty 'old school' and don't mind doing things slowly and methodically. In the next videos on buttercups, I'll try to feature the process in more detail. Thanks again!😊
@@martinleif2872 wonder where one can get a potato rake.
Well, looks like we mis-named the tool! It's a "garden fork". I found one available at Home Depot - although I have no recollection of where we got ours! It is still my intention to add some more detail about the tool and how it gets used for this activity in upcoming videos on the multitude of buttercups I still have to remove. I hope this helps.
Looks great. You will be able to mow right over them.
Thanks Debbie, that was part of the plan!
Use your garden hose to layout your arch. Leave in place till pathway completed
Thank you for the great suggestion, and really wish I had done that!! In any case, I'll likely not be doing this again, but will keep your suggesting in mind.
Good work! I just started doing hard scaping professionally last year, and it’s been hard getting used to the labor/ perfecting building techniques. Looks great- well done
Wow - that's a resounding affirmation for what I thought would "look pretty good!" Watch for the long-form video that is in the pipeline - should be out in a couple of days. Or sooner if I don't think the other stuff is worth posting!!! :-)
Oh - in full disclosure - I DID NOT do the retaining wall! That was my contractor's fine work! All I did was place the concrete steps between the patio deck slab and the stairs built into the retaining wall.
@@martinleif2872 ha! Thanks for the clarification… I don’t think I could build that retaining wall yet either. Your work pulls it together nicely 👍
Enjoy meatloaf day, as well as everyday. Hope you have a good year brother.
I sure appreciate your comment. My year is in fact going exceptionally well - after the shoulder surgery in Jan - and now able to do pretty much everything I did prior to injury! Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
This is nice, I love me some meatloaf
The meatloaf continues to be a hit both here and all over! Thank you for the comment.
Have a tasty meatloaf day, love from india😁👍.
Hi noobmaster. Thank you for your comment - it is greatly appreciated. I hope you may find entertaining stuff on my channel.
Subscribed and can't wait for meatloaf!
Hi there cme! Thanks for coming on board with your subscription! Yep - the meatloaf was great! The link in the video goes to the very first video I posted - you can tell because it's in portrait! That video provides recipe details that differentiate this meatloaf from any you've probably had. My family still raves about it and requests it!
I am having a heart attack watching you put stuff in through the top shredder chute. It looks dangerous.
Sorry to cause the fear! The flywheel is WAAAAY down at the bottom of chute!
what weight of bowling ball were you using 6 months after surgery? I had rotator cuff surgery in april and im looking to return the third week of october. I need to get a new ball anyway. I was using a 15 pd ball...but would like to go lighter. any suggestions?
Hey Todd, thanks for the comment. About two seasons before my surgery, I changed from a 14 lb to a 13 lb ball. After surgery, as part of my recovery process, I started using a weighted practice ball my eldest let me borrow. I can't find the exact video in my shoulder surgery recovery series where I show the practice ball and the wrist weights I used in addition to my Physical Therapy exercises. Watch for another post. Meanwhile, I HAVE a video on my computer that I may not have posted, "Day 128 Home Bowling Practice". Assuming a 30-day average month, that would be 4 months after my January surgery. I was "bowling" simulated games at home with a 2 1/2 lb practice ball, plus 4-6 lbs in the wrist weights. About half my actual ball weight. Took on average 30 swings to simulate a game. I'm no Physical Therapist - nor surgeon - but depending on your actual range of motion with weight - you may be able to proceed with October. As my doc's protocol said regarding returning to activity - "within tolerance" - of pain!
Still not able to find the video where I KNOW I inserted pictures of my practice ball and wrist weights. If you wish - send me an email to "martin.leif@frontier.com" and I'll send you those pictures.
@@martinleif2872 Thanks for the information. Before the surgery I was using a 15 pd ball. I need a new ball anyway since that one is pretty beat up. I was thinking about getting a 12 pd ball to start with in October...6 months after surgery. I am currently using small weights 3-5 pd as part of my physical therapy. Maybe I should start with something lighter...not sure. I am in a league...although more of a fun league than a competitive one.
Looks like great fun. I'm jealous.
Haha Dubi! I guess I kinda wish there had been a little more time to get practice with it. On the b other hand, I'll be watching for opportunities to get "seat time" on other, bigger machines!!!
Beautiful upgrade.
Thanks Debbie, we're very happy too.
Wow I've never seen it done like that. I thought they would put a boom over the side fence.
I thought that too when we first talked about it. I guess our contractor has worked with these guys before hose pumping made me sense than boom, for 7 yds of concrete. Anyway, eliminated the chance the neighbor would complain about "his road"!!!
I wish we could get rain like that here in Vegas.
Honestly Suzie, it reminded me a bit of thunderstorms in Phoenix during monsoon season. The whole yard benefited from it.
Looks fantastic, congrats!
Hey thanks Dubi! We were joking with each other then shared also with our contractors over ribs that that I WILL get stuff done for Brenda. Sometimes it takes a while. In this case, the patio deck was about 30 years!!! ;-)
Wow! You two have been hard at work! Looking good!
Thanks Sherry. There's no lack of "things to do"!!! My challenge is proper prioritizing. ( Good grief! Flashing back to work days!!!)
Retaining wall is beautiful
Thanks Debbie - we're really happy with it too. The next video will show it completed and the one after that will have a few "UA-cam Magic" shots comparing before and after of the patio deck and retaining wall.
At least 3 bags of concrete.
That's one vote for 3 bags.
Keep up the great work
Thank you for the comment Nate. Your compliment is appreciated. I'm really trying to improve the videos as well as our yard.
Congrats! Bet it felt good.
Yes sir!! I'm hoping the groove I found doesn't remain elusive when the season starts!!
Thank you for all your work you help me putting it together
Hey Terry, thanks for the comment. I'm so glad this helped you! If I were to do something like this again, I'll try to do more detail on each of the steps.
How does the skylight panel seal? I'm sure you probably caulking the end with a pivot point is but what about down the spine?? How would it not keep the window shut or crack on trying to open?!
Thanks so much for your comment/questions. First - I was frustrated that I could not figure out a way to send a picture to you - so let me quote the instructions. From page 62, Step 14, Attach Roof Assemblies to Frame Part 3, section F: "Apply silicone caulking on the top of the Continuous Hinge so the silicone completely covers the pivot joints." That seemed odd to us, but since the silicone remains flexible after curing, it doesn't inhibit the movement of the panel. Secondly, if I understand correctly, there really isn't an attempt to completely seal, that is, make the roof vent water tight. It's my belief that the rationale for applying sealant where they advise it is to keep water from collecting/pooling against wood, thereby inhibiting rot. Since the lower edge of the vent panel is left "open", a little bit of water is expected to drip down into the greenhouse, which my wife just confirmed on ours - a couple of spots on the floor directly below the corners of the bottom edge of the vent panel. Just for reference, the link to the online version of the manual I used for this reply is here: yardistrystructures.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/YM11945_6.7_x_7.8_Meridian_Greenhouse_July_29_2022.pdf I hope this answers your questions. Thanks again for your comment. Martin
Shades of 2001 Space Odyssey!!!
Yeah Suzie, last two posted videos had music from the same movie! It's what was rolling around in my head while shooting. And, after compiling the segments, it was the same length as the video!! Some of the music phrases matched the video transitions. A lucky coincidence!
@@martinleif2872 My daughter Kim and I loved the vent opening. That was funny!
@@suziewojtkiewicz9966 we cracked up too!
Where did you get the vent screen? We have wasps in our greenhouse.
Hi Sue - it came with the kit. Which I think was something Yardistry added between 2022 and 2023. Here's my rationale for the thought. We found the manual that came with our kit was dated from Oct. 2023. But the online versions for the same manual were from mid 2022, as I recall. The older manuals did NOT have the installation instruction page for the vent screen. In my manual, it's part information is: "Vent Mesh", (Y20118-852). My hope is that you could request one by contacting Yardistry directly. I hope that helps. And thank you so much for your comment.
@@martinleif2872 I got my kit in October 2023 and it did not come with a screen.
That's quite strange, and blows up my theory. However, it's still my guess that contacting Yardistry directly may help purchasers get a vent mesh.
