Texel density is essential for maintaining the right texture sizes in real-time graphics applications such as games. It helps prevent over-detailing, under-detailing, and wasted detail due to downsampling. Additionally, it prevents unnecessary VRAM wastage by ensuring that textures are appropriately sized for the objects in the game world. In a static rendering context, it also helps to improve...

thank you for your amazing add-on!!!
Anyone else cant "recon poly", "solidify", "move object away from center", "create new object in center or empty", "circular array the recon poly object around that new center object" ? It always messes up the recon poly object, as if the parameters get messed up somehow, doesnt keep the shape. (maybe the empty used for the array inside the add on isnt where it should be?) Creating a regular object, moving it from the center and then circ array it around something else works as it should be, as far as I can tell. The recon poly object doesnt.
Recon-poly is a special case as it's essentially a single vertex with a big stack of modifiers on it. It's also reliant on the origin point being at the same spot as the single vertex. Hence why when you run a circular array, which moves the origin point, it gets messy. This is covered in our deep dive series (in the replication video). Basically, the answer is for recon poly (and other similar stacks) you'll need to use the circular operator in its "faux origin" alternative mode. - Tristan
@@HugeMenace Cool, missed that part or forgot it from the deep dive vid, thx for explaining!
Is there a way to extrude along normals?
Not using Blender's solidify modifier unfortunately. Maybe at some point using GN. But otherwise, you'll have to go destructive to extrude along face normals. - Tristan
Sweet
Sorry quick question, I use Octane for blender and with that comes a different set of lights, is there a way to set that up with this function?
I assume you mean ND Flare? Not currently. I'm unsure what would be required or if it's even possible without having to create a special version of ND for Blender Octane. - Tristan
@ that would be awesome, if possible, loving the add on … great job 👏🏾
Pressing Shift 2 does notthing, all of the other operators wrolk just not Shift +2. Any suggestions?
There are some default keybindings in Blender to hide/show collections bound to Shift+1-9. Sometimes the Shift+2 one can override ND. You can either remove it, leaving only ND's behind, or change ND's Shift+2 binding to something else you prefer (this can be done easily from ND's preferences). - Tristan
@@HugeMenace I try to change the binding to some other keybindings and it still dose nothing:(
Which key-binding are you trying to use, and where are you changing it (Blender's keymap settings or ND's preferences)? - Tristan.

I can't believe this addon is free
Man this is priceless. Such QOF additions for 3D Game Artists using Blender. Something like auto suffixes for high and low may seem small, but if ones been there, one knows how much value this adds.
I'd love to meet that "AnDy" :P
Simplifiying "Simple" Deform was exactly what Blender needed. And what a nice bonus it being non destructive on top.
For anyone who still uses right click and wonders why selection doesn't work during View Align mode: It doesn't support it. Swapping to Left Click will work.
ND does support right click select, you'll just need to enable it in its preferences :) - Tristan
Exceptional. What Blender can become due to smart developers creating add-ons like these. It is almost like sitting in some crazy bio mechanical cockpit controlling the poly modeling process intuitively with your mind flowing into your hands. Will purchase soon (to support). Also: This is a prime example for me of how to do a video documentation. Seldom seen such a pleasant, well structured, clear and to the point video documentation on any complex modeling addon.
Thank you! Appreciate your support and kind feedback. Glad you're enjoying ND. - Tristan

Thank you! Glad you found it useful. - Tristan
So it's basically like a parametric modelling workflow for Blender? This is sick
Not quite parametric, just non-destructive :) however, there are hopes/plans to introduce true parametric functionality in the future! - Tristan

The ability to add points was removed from ND. You'll need to add them using Blender's native functionality such as the extrude function. - Tristan
hey tristan, how is going? i getting a hard time with the add on now. im trying to make a difference on my object with a cube but as soon as I try to do it, my cube just disappears from the project and I get this error message: Error: Object 'Bool - Cube' can't be selected because it is not in View Layer 'ViewLayer'!
Hey there. Is ND's util collection excluded from the view layer by any chance (the little checkbox to the right of the collection name)? You'll need to ensure it remains checked/active in order for ND (and, by extension, Blender's API) to manage objects in that collection. - Tristan

I love it ! Thanks so much
I had no idea that this add-on adds so much useful funtionality besides just modeling, great job!
Thank you for good video
How do I get this plane? 😅 I don`t use fast predict (only the main short cut with everything in it) and it`s not in the sketch section and I can`t find it anywhere. I love the recon poly, but it triangulates the fill caps and creates chaos if you don`t cut through.
The plane and cube primitives in the fast menu are just shortcuts for Blender's built-in ones, which can be found via the SHIFT+A > Mesh menu. - Tristan
@@HugeMenace But how do you get it in your fast predict menu? I know I can add it to my quick favourites or just give "add plane" a shortcut. But it`s in your ND fast predict menu. I have single vertex and recon poly too. But not add plane and add cube.
I work with 4.2.1 and I have the latest version of ND.
That's weird! Do you see any errors in the console when opening the Fast menu? - Tristan
@@HugeMenace No matter what I do I can use the fast predict only in edit mode. I used the shortcut "Alt V", because the focus option from machin3tools used "F". Now I changed it to "F" and deactivated the focus option from mt. Add plane is located in "Sketch", right? There is no "add plane" and fast predict only works in edit mode. I`ve never seen "add plane" in ND. The console says nothing related to ND. The addons are getting loaded when I open Blender. That`s it. No error.
hello, thank you for your amazing add-on. what's the process of making it usable for game engine?
It's a similar process to any other type of model. You can apply all the modifiers, clean up the geometry as necessary, UV unwrap, and prep for export. I do have a series of videos planned demonstrating the whole game assets pipeline using ND :) - Tristan
it is crazy how feature complete your addon is for free. thanks for your contribution and hopefully i can pay it back in the future

Fantastic addon, thank you!
Thank you very much for the video. You don't know how helpful it is. I'm looking forward to more videos on the topic🙌.
Happy to hear that! - Tristan
Thank you for the incredibly informative video! I am still unsure about one thing though: What is the best way to tackle giving bigger objects (like a wardrobe or a bookcase for example) the desired high texel density, if they are not going to be using a tileable texture (and therefore you can't just scale their UVs out of the box)? Do you just upscale the map to 4k and above (I often hear that this solution is only reserved for hero models)? Or do you go and give the asset several different 2k textures (like 1 for the shelves, 1 for the sides, etc.) so that you can fit them within the box while meeting the desired pixel density? PS: I am aware that overlapping UVs would be a smart solution to the problem, but for the sake of this example let's assume there is going to be a bunch of ornaments and other details across the asset that would make overlapping impossible.
The honest answer is, "It depends." What it depends on is the context: Is it a hero asset? Is unique texturing across the entire surface area of the object critical? Are you and your team looking for strict or loose TD adherence? Is this for a game, animation, or static render? But to answer your question (missing the complete context), you can use a 4K or 8K map if that achieves your desired TD. Otherwise, you could split the object into multiple pieces and texture them individually (case vs shelves, for example). Or you can be tactical with where you adhere to TD targets. For instance, if the bookshelf is placed against a wall and is taller than the player (assuming this is for a game), the object's back, bottom, and top could have a low TD, leaving more UV space for the visible areas. But also, given that you'll never be able to see both sides of the bookcase simultaneously (assuming no mirrors), you could overlap those UV islands. You could also decrease the TD for the bottom of the shelves below crouch height, etc. There are many different ways to achieve the desired result :) If you have more specific examples or an actual model you want advice on, feel free to post the details on our Discord server, I'd be happy to help. - Tristan
@@HugeMenace Thank you a lot. I'm mostly self thought, so even though I know how to produce a high quality finished asset for animation or games, I lack common sense knowledge on industry practices like this. It is a relief to see that all the solutions you listed, I have already done in the past for various projects - now I can have the confidence in applying them in a company environment as well.
Ok, risking looking like a blind guy again here: After performing a boolean operation, and then cycling to the new utility, is there a way to apply additional modifiers? For example: I create an octagon-shaped cylinder. I want to apply an array in the Z direction on a face, then a circular array. I want to do this in a slice operation, but I first have to ensure my slicer/cutter is how i want it. I create the cutter and apply a diff. I adjust as i want and am ready to perform the array/circular array operation, but when I cycle to the utility, it's not bringing up the modifiers in the quick menu. I think it has to do with its labeling prefix of "Bool". I know I can do it the longer, standard way but is there something I'm missing?
You can always add more modifiers to utils, however, ND may not always "predict" the ones you're after when using the fast menu. You can always use the main ND menu (SHIFT+2) to access every operator available. Each new version of ND usually includes further enhancements to the fast menu. I can take a look at adding additional predictions to it when you select a util object. - Tristan
@@HugeMenace Sensational.
I have a (really big) tree, the 4k texture is not enough to get all the tree at 2.56 px/cm, I suppose need to distribute the UV islands in multiple UV maps, is it possible? and how? 've used UVPackmaster3 to distribute in different tiles but not sure if it will works in substance and game engine, have no idea how I should to proceed.
Hello. There are a few techniques for larger assets as they're not always ideal for a single UV unwrap. You can either split the model into smaller parts, unwrapping each part and therefore creating multiple textures, or use a tiling texture, tri-planar projected texture, vertex colors, or any combination of the above. There are quite a few ways to go about it depending on how that tree will be used. - Tristan
@@HugeMenace thank you for the help, I'll await for new videos
omg i watched this out of genuine interest and at the end I realized it's the ND guy! i love u man
Thanks for checking the video out :) I hope it was helpful! - Tristan
Ok, so I create a utility that includes a vertex bevel and a 2nd standard bevel. I use it in a boolean operation. I noticed that when I Hydrate the utility then use it in another boolean operation, its 2nd standard bevel no longer exists (though its 2nd weld modifier remains). I'm assuming that it's because it inherits the primary boolean object or something, but maybe an option to keep it might be worth considering? I dunno. It's not the biggest deal, but I'd perform this operation repeatedly having to duplicate the utility again before boolean-ing it so I could have its modifiers as reference to then add back in to the Hydrated utility. That's probably not that clear.
Hey, I think I understand what you're saying. If you watch the boolean video in the deep dive series, you'll see that ND performs a "clean-up" step on utils before it booleans them, which would get rid of the object bevel. You can however choose to skip the clean-up step by using the alternative mode: holding down Alt when choosing one of the boolean operators. - Tristan
@@HugeMenace cool. Glad i could help. im just playin. But i do remember, now that you mentioned it. And it's exactly what I'm talking about. I have this bothersome habit: when i go to the store and can't find something. I bust my hump looking before I bother someone. I finally conclude i need to get someone to point it out to me--without fail, man. It's ALWAYS right there. In my face. They just point and ask, "you mean this?" I also wanna add: I've never progressed through any of my hard surface projects before as i have after ND. And I've put in the time, man. The overhead feels so low; it's intuitive; so comprehensive. I was gonna say, "maybe customizable themes?", buf I'd just end up making it look the way it does now. In short: thank you. God bless you.
Haha, that happened to me just yesterday at the hardware store. Was looking for a while trying to find a specific kind of tape, decided to ask one of the employees and they said, "it's right behind you." As for customizable themes, that's already possible, just check the theme tab in the ND add-on preferences :) Glad you're enjoying it! - Tristan.

This was really interesting to see, loved how you did the lighting as well
Pretty dope add-on. Now I can stop working solely with polygons. I have just about one gripe with this add-on, mainly about recalling. Is there a way I can choose to disable it? I wanna add another modifier of the same type in different areas of an object but the recall feature is preventing me from doing just that. I know it's probably mentioned in both of these videos from the welcome page, but either I might be dumb and just skimmed both videos and some of the documentation for a straight-away answer or the documentation wasn't specific enough. Either way, for example, if I go into edit mode on an object, select any edge or vertex I want to bevel, and run vertex/edge bevel from either the Fast (Predict) context menu or the main context menu, it'll bevel the object from that vertex or edge I've selected. However, if I want to bevel another edge or vertex, I can run vertex/edge bevel on the newly-selected edge or vertex. What should happen, as expected initially, is that a new bevel modifier would be added within the stack of modifiers I have, but what I'm getting is that--instead of beveling the selected edges and vertices I want to bevel--it's altering the bevels for the edges and vertices I made which I don't have currently selected. Outside this example, while this is good and all because I might want to change the intensity of a bevel, set the boolean interaction of two objects, or the like, I also want to add another modifier of the same type without being limited to alter it through recalling, that or needing to apply the modifier this add-on is recalling--which is my current workaround in case anyone is having the same issue. While this might not be of any priority at the time of making these videos or putting out this add-on, I kinda wish that there was a way to toggle recall off or on.
Hi, thanks! Glad you are enjoying ND. There's no way to disable recall mode currently. I'm unsure what exactly might be causing the issue you are having with bevels, but it is possible to add multiple (stacking) Bevels in object mode by holding down SHIFT as you select Bevel. In terms of Edge and Vertex Bevels in Edit Mode things get a little trickier. You can't stack multiple of either on the same geometry selection, or in some cases where edges connect to other edges which have already had an edge bevel applied. This may be what is happening to you. It really depends specifically what you are trying to model, as a non-destructive approach with Blender definitely requires a few workarounds in certain cases, however there is likely a way to achieve what you are intending, but it may just require a different approach. There are a few tricks that become more obvious with a little more experience. If you'd like some more detailed help, feel free to post a few images and description in our Discord community. - Ian
@@HugeMenace I've tried stacking a new bevel modifier from the ND menu using SHIFT on different selections of an object I want to apply a new bevel modifier to (both pressing SHIFT once and holding it down) and it didn't (even temporarily) disable recall, sadly. The best but destructive approach is to apply the modifier it's forcing me to recall instead of stacking another of its type over it.
Only object mode bevels can currently be stacked. Edit mode bevels (edge and vertex) cannot be stacked. It's worth watching the Bevels video in the ND Deep Dive series to understand how they all work. - Tristan
@@HugeMenace Oh okay, I assume that stackable edit mode bevels are planned?
Not currently, but I'm happy to consider it if there's a good use case for them while considering the built-in limitations of Blender's edge weights and vertex groups. - Tristan
