As far as the different rock genres go, unlike others here I'm willing to give you a break because you are unintentionally speaking from a place of ignorance. When you were watching this show, rock was well past its prime. This show came out when I was about 15 and various forms of rock were the most popular forms of music in the country. In between me being young and you watching this show, hip-hop took over and was eventually replaced with pop/club music. I'm not sure what your generations' experience with rock music has been but the reaaon punk was the theme of FLCL was specifically because it was the most popular form of music AT THE TIME. One shudders to think of what would happen if the show debuted now😅.

Speaking as a concept artist who also loved FLCL, I bet we could team up and make something inspired/influenced by FLCL that is not a sequel but also is better than all those sequels. Think about it and get back to me.

As a massive fan of the OG version, I always felt bad for not giving the new ones a chance. Now I feel like that's okay. The new Trigun was awesome though.

Properties like Fooly Cooly are the reason why I stopped looking at franchises as the canons we're presented and instead I think of them as pieces of art left up for interpretation, sure all the Fooly Cooly sequels are canon and official but if it goes against the enjoyment or artistic merits of the original piece its just like a company claiming to have made the Mona Lisa 2

The odd dryness in all the vibrant chaos is what gives FLCL its unique vibes but the sequel is just a cliché pure and energetic teens. I CANNOT imagine Haruko being genuinely invested and interested in some teen girls. It’s just not Haruko. Haruko is not a pure teen girl vibe, she is more of a middle aged guy that really has to mature, like a girl version of Kaji from Evangelion

Not to be that guy, but the FLCL sequel titles are all different subgenres of rock and roll. Because Haruko's weapon of choice is an electric bass. And the music used in the show is mostly rock, and specifically these 4 genres of rock mostly. I think it's the one decently creative choice they made with the sequels. Everything else is pretty shit

I just watched the entire series in the past couple weeks and I think alternative and shoegaze are actually pretty good and I think it helps that they’re clearly connected. Progressive was fine but I agree it did just feel like its own show sometimes, kind of trying to stay “too normal” in a way. And I just don’t like grunge at all. The original is easily the best but I think at least alt and Shoegaze deserve a little more love.

I agree, there are no sequels to FLCL - it's a complete story, as far as you can make out the story and message and theme. Plus "we are answering questions"? No they fcking don't. Those are fictional characters created by other people with the deliberate decision of NOT having a backstory. They can make something up the same way I could and both have the same claim to "answering" the questions. For legal reasons they define the canon, but in practice whatever they make up is still just made up - and if it sucks, we can ignore it. There is no sequel to FLCL in spirit. Also as an older weeb closer to deaths door, I see no reason of subjecting myself to the unsatisfactory sequels, while having enough of a backlog of old and new shows I want to go through. So yeah, happy to know others made the sacrifice to tell me they suck and I don't need to bother.

Well its bc the OG was lightning in a bottle made in a unique way with the others not really having the same energy or commitment. (Thanks for making me feel old, I already know I am) With that said the first 2 sequels aren't actually that bad for a "finished" mini series compared to some many other anime, I wouldn't say they are great but they are not bad either. Nothing compared to the OG of course.
