    Goddam you need to learn to increase the volume of this video.... 4:17 oh god that text...The white highlight makes the black text less readable. It's like having black text on deep red background. Or even super tiny print. Definitely a card game I'd never play due to unreabability With the negatives out of the way.... It's sound information, and great examples.

      Depending on the size and scale of your project, I recommend you take it to a professional level. Even something simple like "Make Playing Cards" the website can help people who only work at a very basic level produce some very good looking prototypes. At the hand made level, its really hard, as you are simply spending too much time on the creation aspect. When I make proxies for testing, I do something similar, but I basically print them on PC paper, and then just use a normal paper cutter that any office supply shop would have. This at the very least will allow you to test your game before moving to the next stages. Once you feel like your ready for real printing, MPC or other digital printers are a good option. I wouldn't necessarily recommend offset printing unless you plan on having a large enough demand to make hundreds or thousands of printings. :) Hope that helps a bit!

    • @tenshokutcg4984
      @tenshokutcg4984 Рік тому

      Hi Samuraiman. Thank you for watching. I'm afraid I'm not really an expert on MSE. I often just use it to get a "general" idea of what I'm going to be making. How the art looks with the colors, with various stats, etc. I often find card design should be equally designed via bottom up requirements, but also by top down feel and aesthetics. I'm much more comfortable in photoshop. One of the big issues with MSE is it cannot normally output at a good resolution, and it can only output JPEGs. Off set printers will not accept such low resolution images or jpeg files, so I've not found any need for MSE other than template testing. I'm sorry I'm not of more use ; ; But I know there are some amazing people out there who might be able to help.

      Hi Ryan! Unfortunately he is a professional here in Japan and a large reason he agreed to assist me is because we have worked together on other projects. In Japan this situation is very unusual, but it just worked out timing wise where we both were in between projects. Typically outside of SKEB, most professionals in Japan don't work with small scale and indie projects like this. I apologize if that is not the answer you were looking for. :< But definitely look around! Ask friends, and look online! There are TONS of graphic artists who would love a unique project like a card frame. (I've made a video on just how much of a task that is as well... Give it a watch if you are interested!)

    • @tenshokutcg4984
      @tenshokutcg4984 2 роки тому

      Typically for an offset printing job, you are going to want around 500~1000 units. (So 500~1000 DECKS of cards). That is going to be the absolute minimum. The price point per unit will drop as you scale up from there. That in reality is part of the challenge. If you don't realistically think you can move 400~500 decks/units, it's typically going to be a hard sell to use offset printing. Digital, can be great for prototypes and short prints, but it doesn't scale up very well. Best of luck with your creations!

    Great video! And your game looks great! I’m curious what you do to not get overwhelmed when creating cards in your excel file? I’m working on my card game and I’ve been going back and forth working on rules in excel, card layout/border in photoshop, and the individual cards in an excel file similar to yours. I find myself struggling in the excel file while trying to create card names/rules text that I have to scroll back and forth throughout the file trying to make sure I don’t create a similar card in a different faction. I’ve tried printing out the excel list and maybe doing it that way so I’m not just staring at a screen but it still is more difficult then I think I needs to be lol. Any tips would be appreciated!

      @tenshokutcg4984 2 роки тому

      So I have a multi-step process that I continue to update as I go. First and foremost, I like to start out at a conceptual level. Both "top down" and "bottom up" design. Is there any power level cards that need to be designed to fix an issue? (Catcher for example in TSK, was a direct response to the strong Fajen based "dredge" decks.) After that, I also consider what kind of gameplay experience I want each deck to be focused around. Doing these large scale design processes first, allows me to slim down my design file, before I even get started. Sometimes, I'll find artwork that is just perfect for a theme, and I'll build around it's own flavor. As a creator, I would DEFINITELY recommend designing in groups. Doing individual cards and throwing them together has a very different end result than a properly organized and planned out endeavor. Finally, another thing I can recommend, is save the names for the end. I typically just give each archetype a code letter, before I even know what its called. I will just call them N-1, N-2, N-3, etc. Sometimes, the effects will create their own personalities on their own. For example, in TSK, Saiya cards tend to be a little joke of over stated, or keyword soup type cards. So now it's kind of become a joke that those cards in design will end up being a relative of Saiya in someway. I also recommend using pages in your design files. I typically have something like 3-4 "sheets" in my excel devoted to that set's themes, ideas, etc. Then each archetype will get its own sheet. I typically do 15 cards for each archetype + a Ruler/Legend. It's much easier to handle chunks of 15~17 than 130+ though. It's all about chunking it. Make it easy to process. Those ideas combined, should help! Break it down beforehand with some pre-planning to prevent overlapping design. Then, break it down physically into different sheets to make it easier to approach each section. I also recommend "modeling" cards in something like MSE, just to get a general idea of the layout and design of cards. Sometimes something just looks better with a different arrangement, or a subtraction of text, or an extra keyword thrown in. Lastly, don't be afraid once all the design groundwork is done and artwork has been selected, to go back and modify cards based on the "feel" of the card. Sometimes art leads you in a certain direction. Let your cards tell a story. Not a single card, but the entire set! I hope that helps~! T_T Man, I need to get back to making videos. I'm so lazy recently. As always, thank you for your support and good luck with your game!

  • @j453

    How did you get the art for your game? Also, how long have you been working on it?

    • @tenshokutcg4984
      @tenshokutcg4984 2 роки тому

      Hi J! Great question. Since my game is not officially released or anything, I definitely surf the high pirate sea's when it comes to a lot of art. However, I typically try to contact the artists and ask permission when possible. Some of the art has been commissioned as well! For example, the card, Eve, that I use in most of my thumbnails was commissioned. Nicer pieces tend to be quite pricey. Upwards of 1000 USD+. I would love to commission more, but economically it's' not viable to do so frequently. The same with the card frame and logo. Commissioned out to professionals. I tend to use Twitter, PIXIV, or SKEB to find artists who are available and contact them with the project details. That is also the reason when I send sets to people, I do not charge anything, merely shipping prices. As for your second question: I've been working on TSK since about 2018. Prior to that, I was working at a Japanese card game company alongside my normal job. After leaving, I used my unused card designs for the original Alpha of TSK, which was very rough. Through playing and experimentation, I arrived at this current version. Beta was released in 2019 Gamma was released in 2021 and I'm hoping to have Omega ready for 2023. After that, I may finish the project, or tinker and adjust the game for a public, REAL release, if there was ever an interest in going that direction. In addition, I would love to write more and develop the lore a bit more, to make the world a bit more encompassing and interesting as a fantasy story. Thanks for stopping by and I hope I've answered your questions!

      Yes! I think I needed to increase my speaking volume by at least 10% or so. I will try to fix it in the next one! I need to find a better option for recording my voice. I hope the material wasn't too stifled by the weak voice.

    I was rewatching some of your videos recently and a thought occurred to me I'm wondering if you could elaborate on. How'd you decide to handle archetypes in the way you have? There are obviously a lot of options for how to do this, from the MTG style where they aren't designated explicitly on the card, but there are still creature type based "tribal" synergies and decks that exist. Archetypes from a meta sense end up being discovered through play for the most part with some design nudges, as synergies aren't defined by an explicit relationship most of the time. This is very different obviously from a game like YuGiOh, where cards can often exclusively work with other members of their own explicitly designated archetype separate from fields like card type and then gets augmented with more general cards; Tenshoku seems to fit more in this category. I'd be really interested in hearing how you decided on handling archetypes the way you did, what you saw as the major benefits of doing so, and why you went with this route over others. I'm not sure if this is video content or comment content or what, but I've been floating back and forth on this topic myself for several months now (I'm slow as heck this is a small project hobby for me lol) and I'd love to hear the thoughts of someone with much more experience in this area than I have. Thanks! :D

      Great question. Unfortunately, I do not live in the US, so I do not have a lot of experience with them. I've had many US based friends ask about the company but I can't speak positively or negatively with so little interaction. I would say however, any company you are considering working with is worth contacting and discussing your needs with. I was lucky that I had a representative from my factory who assisted me my first time through the process, alongside my background in other TCGs. Never be afraid to email companies, just asking questions and getting quotes. :) Thanks for watching!

      I'm not Tenshoku, but I can speak to my own experiences. TGC is a great site for getting your name out there, especially if you have a killer product. That said, their pricing model is not going to make you anything resembling the big bucks. In some cases, it might even hamstring your game's growth at the LGS level, especially if stores don't want to pay TGC prices for product. Foils are middling quality at best, they have pretty bad drift on their cards, but you get the lowest cost of entry, no need to worry about inventory, no need to worry about sales tax, and you can ship anywhere in the world. TL;DR: They're alright, but be mindful of their limitations and have contingencies to work around them.

      Sorry for taking a bit to reply! Regarding your question, the best way to address the issue is when you are making multiple layers, you put your image layer at the very bottom, or almost the very bottom of the file. (In photoshop or gimp) Then you can adjust your layers of borders, frames, etc and opacity to make the rest of the card look at you would like. I hope that helps a bit! Good luck with your game!! :D
