Navruz, or Navroʻz in Uzbek, is a spring festival and New Year celebrated in Uzbekistan on March 21st. It marks the vernal equinox, when daylight and darkness are of equal length, and the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. The name Navruz comes from the Persian words "nav" (new) and "ruz" (day). The festival originated in Khorasan, Iran over 3,000 years ago, and spread to neighboring countries, becoming a custom among farmers and nomadic Turkic peoples.
Navruz is celebrated with family and friends, and holiday celebrations are spread out over several days.
