Yes, I would go with TimberTech Advanced PVC (AZEK) decking in heavy rain environments and around pools/hot tubs - also in areas that receive a lot of direct sunlight, the PVC decking stays about 30 degrees cooler than composite. The TimberTech Advanced PVC product is 100% PVC all the way through. 'TimberTech Composite' decking has a core made of a mix of recycled wood fibers and synthetic deck material like post-consumer polymers, but the cap is made up of 100% polymers.

Although TimberTech PVC does have a 50-year Fade/Stain warranty, it does have a fairly thin cap around their boards that can scratch under certain conditions - depending on the color, scratches can be more noticeable as well. We have found the darker colors to show scratches more easily. For best scratch resistance, I would recommend: Trex Transcend, Trex Transcend Lineage, and Trex Signature.

I would agree! Your best bet for top-tier scratch resistance and durability is either 'Trex Transcend' or 'Trex Signature'.

You're correct! Composite and PVC decking are both rated to be installed on 16"OC joists. I misspoke during the video - our builders at Voyager are told to install AZEK (TimberTech Advanced) PVC on 12"OC joists 100% of the time to minimize possible board flex that can feel 'springy' underfoot.

Overall pricing does change frequently on all brands and product lines. For each jump up in product line (within both Trex and TimberTech brands), we typically see an average price increase of 8%-10%.

Thanks for your comment! Yes, 5/15/50 on their 'ExpertFinish' (more expensive) option - only 5/50 on their regular LP SmartSide siding. The LP siding product is a great product and extremely durable... BUT, it is interesting to me that LP voids the warranty if lawn sprinklers spray water onto their product. You would think in a rainforest in Hawaii their product would be subject to much more water exposure than lawn sprinklers running for an hour or two.

Do not powerwash. The best way to clean LP is by mixing mild detergent or dishwashing liquid with warm water in a bucket and use a sponge to scrub siding from top to bottom.

The 'cap' on a deck board is the layer of Polymer on top that protects the composite from water, moisture, scratches, etc. Most products have a Polymer cap on the top and sides of a board, and TimberTech also offers some of their product in a 4-sided cap where the Polymer wraps around the bottom of the boards as well.

Yes, if you pay for their 'ExpertFinish' the paint coating is warrantied for 15 years. The warranty then becomes a 5/15/50. 5 year full coverage, 15 year on the finish, and 50 years prorated.

It depends on the situation. Most often some, if not all, footings will need to be removed if the current locations of the old footings interfere with the new deck design/layout. Also, our decision would depend on the condition of the old support posts footings, etc. Could definitely be a multi-scenario situation that we would explain to the homeowner and come to a final decision on best approach from there. Timbertech Prime+ was and always has been a 4-side capped board, but we were told by our sources that they could be planning to phase that out in the near future. There are 3 product lines within TimberTech that are (or are going to be) 3-side capped: Prime, Prime+, and Premier.

@@voyager-roofingsidingdecks2646 sure wished it were easier to decide on what to go with. The deck is low grade deck, in Florida, so I’m thinking fully capped would be best. What brand/line in the Timbertech prime+ or next level would you recommend?

Diamond Kote is a prefinisher of LP. Same product, but 30-year finish warranty. Plus, they make rabbeted trim w/attached nail fins to create a hidden fastener system.

Only if it's primed with oil. Stay away from the LP crap, it's just glorified osb plywood.

As we haven't used Allura siding on any of our projects here at Voyager, I wouldn't be able to speak to specifics, but I do hear both Hardie and Allura are similar products from a quality standpoint. A few standouts from both products are: James Hardie - 30 year warranty with multiple style options and up to 700 colors to choose from within their ColorPlus Technology line. Hardie also offers two different board types depending on where your state is located in the United States using their HardieZone System. Hardie board used in the northern half of the US use HZ5 which is formulated to better resist wet/cold climates, whereas HZ10 is used in more of the southern/west coastal states and are formulated to resist heat, humidity, and the blistering sun. Hardie also offers and "Architectural" collection that doubles the thickness of the board from 5/16" to 5/8". Allura - 50 year warranty on all their product lines with 25 different color options to choose from. Their boards are made up of the same ingredients that are used to make Hardie board.

If you leave a piece of osb in a shed without insulation it actually warps from absorbing moisture. Now imagine this stuff on your house. It's going to rot eventually. Cement board is forever. LP smartside is only good for the installer.

@@rmkensington Period my has that siding and I noticed the bottom panels and the trims on the windows, especially the bottom part where paint bearly reach when they are painting super fast with machine. This prodcut shouldn't be in the market at all.

@@rmkensington You couldn't be more wrong as your statement is incorrect. It's not traditional OSB and it will not rot. Therefore the 50-year warranty on the substrate made with MDI resin, zinc borate and hydrophobic waxes formed under heat and pressure. It also come with an initial 5-year labor warranty. Cement board contains Portland cement, with sand and wood fiber and actually absorbs water. Certainly not forever.

You are probably referring to their first-generation siding called InnerSeal which failed, and LP paid out handsomely in a class action lawsuit. They re-engineered the line 30 years ago to what is now known as SmartSide. Totally different and performs.

@@rmkensington I used on my shed - Threw some on the ground untreated part down (not painted) in front of shed to walk on - Been over 2 years now in rain and mud - wiped mud off a piece short while back, and front and back looks brand new. Try that with osb, plywood, or cement board.

James Hardie makes a 4ftx10ft "HardiePanel" Fiber Cement siding product that has a similar look to T1-11. These panels can be used in combination with other James Hardie siding products/styles if desired.
