Roman concrete, known as "opus caementicium," was made primarily from volcanic ash, lime (calcium oxide), and aggregates such as pieces of brick or rock. The key ingredient, volcanic ash, often came from regions like Pozzuoli near Naples, which is why it is sometimes called pozzolana. This combination of materials gave Roman concrete its exceptional durability and ability to set underwater, which was crucial for constructing harbors and other structures. Recent research has highlighted the role of specific chemical reactions between the lime and volcanic ash in the concrete's long-term durability, but there is no historical or scientific evidence to suggest that animal fat, including pigs' fat, was part of the recipe.
