I have to admit, those photos are gorgeous!!
How was the coffee at Ciro? Great advice... Thank You!
Grandioses Video wieder mal, Leander! Ist echt eine Kunst, bei einem dermaßen gesättigten Thema weiterhin etwas Wertvolles hinzuzufügen - und die Kunst ist dir gelungen!
Excellent video ! I subscribe
Thank you, glad you liked it!
nice tips! I was thinking pack light would mean 1 zoom lens or maybe 2 primes? but 3 primes?! what lens do you bring to travel?
This is personal preference of course. You could just use a single zoom of course. But my head works easier, when I think in primes. Every shot is either wide, standard or telephoto. Plus I often like to shoot with shallow depth of field nowadays, and primes give you that extra bit of background blur.
As someone who struggles with photos that feel great in the moment but seem lacking *something* when reviewing them back at home..."thinking in sets" is a revelation. Thank you!!
Great, so glad to hear that! Yes, this was definitely eye opening for me too. And it takes a lot of pressure from getting a single perfect shot. Because it‘s more about a good combination.
is that a leica sl3?
@FamilyGuyShorts-f2h Close, it‘s the new Leica SL3-S
Very informative thank you
Most welcome, thanks for watching!
wow! I am that kind of person who takes pictures of whatever looks/feels good in the moment, and I don't necessarily think this is a negative habit: in my case it makes me relax, be present and enjoy the process. however, your advice about thinking in sets is eye-opening for me! I guess this is the reason why I stopped sharing my pictures online. something was always missing in comparison to other people, and now I know what it was: they actually shared their pictures in sets! even if this new approach to photofraphy could cost me some additional effort and less relaxation, I think I can try and learn until it becomes more automatic, like a new skill you just internalize with pratice. I really appreciate this video, grazie!
Wow I can relate to every word you said! I wish us luck on this journey. Have a good one.😊
So happy to read that, really! And of course, being present in the moment and enjoying it is also contributing to better images. And I actually find the set approach to be really motivating too. For example, you can dedicate the next 2h to just look for details and focus on that. You will still be able to shoot everything that catches your eye and it is amazing how much more we notice when we set ourself a little target!
Amazing❤
@@dummy4889 Thank you!
Great tips man :)
Cheers, glad you found them useful!
What cam ?
The new Leica SL3-S
You shot some beautiful images. Really like the colors you pulled out of the camera. You got me thinking about selling my R6ii package and all lenses to buy this but then I realized it still shoots cropped 4k 60 and my brain came back down to earth haha
Yeah, that‘s a bit of a battle - I think the SL3-S with the APO Summicron primes has some of the best colors and renderings out of any camera. But some specs could be better when factored in the price and competition. I think it comes down to what you value more: The latest specs or nicer looking images.
What SD card do you use? If you don't mind.
I use SD cards from Angelbirds - great value for money!
hi, what camera you used for images in this video?
All shot on the Leica M11
Thank you for your advice and the fantastic content! I really enjoyed the overall vibes of the location where the shoot took place, could you share where this was filmed? What city or country is it in?
The footage and the images are all taken in Naples, Italy
Great advice, last year was in Naples and my photos suck compared to yours, did not feel inspired back then. But rediscovered my passion again!
Sometimes all it needs is the right mindset. Naples definitely is great for photography, I think!
Panasonic manufactured camera with Sony sensor. Want to record video, use a ' video camera '
Panasonic has factories in Germany?
@@joeypandabear If you believe the SL, Q and D-Lux are made in Germany, you also believe in unicorns. The only camera made in Germany is the M series.
My friend, the camera clearly states „Made in Germany“. And Leica only manufactures their cameras in Europe - if it is not directly made in Germany then in their Portugal facilities
@@walkingmanvideo9455no facts just believing - they are definitely not made in Germany. That is who can believe in unicorn or flat Earth, because to answer any question you need critical thinking and not believing
What you said might be electronic made by Panasonic and housing and final form is assembled in Germany maybe?
Definitely want one of these but don’t know if it makes ANY sense as a S5iix owner.
From a specs perspective alone - no, they are very similar. But I really loved the images out of the SL3-S. The colors are beautiful and combined with the APO SL primes I‘d say this camera produces some of the best looking images out there. If that‘s worth the insane premium in price is up to the individual. Personally I would take (granted, subjectively) better looking images over the most maxed out specs any time. But definitely give it a try at your local store - you won‘t be disappointed!
Sorry real pros dont want to record externally. I would pay more for Prores recording in all modes INTERNALLY. It's a shame it is still limited to only certain modes/fps.
Sure, recording internal RAW would have been great - but I guess this is more of a licensing issue, rather than a hardware issue. And it still is a very good hybrid camera!
good video and I agree with all of your pro's! well said! I almost did have a heart attack when I saw your lenses go into the bag without lens cover or the cover on the camera side of the lens - recovered though! keep up the good work!
Haha, that was just for demonstrations sake - usually I put on the lens caps
Really useful advice. And more, I love your editing
Thanks a lot!
Thanks for the tip ❤
Wierd question but is this in Vienna? Either that or I got some wierd deja vu
Yes, well spotted, that‘s at Naschmarkt!

Great video! What are your three lenses you use?

Like a moth!
Hello everyone, I have a question: I’m starting a world trip this summer. I’ve been into photography for 3 years now and have collected several lenses. However, I’m not entirely sure which lenses I should take with me or if I should sell some and buy different ones instead. Thanks a lot for your support! Here’s what I have: Sony A7iii Viltrox 20mm f2.8 Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 v2 Tamron 70-300mm f4.5-6.3 Tamron 150-500mm f5-6.7 Looking forward to your suggestions!
Personally I would bring the 20, 28-75 and 70-300mm. The 150-500mm would be to big and heavy for me personally. But it really depends on what you expect to shoot. If you plan on photographing wildlife, the 150-500mm makes a lot of sense. Maybe add a nice, bright prime for taking photos at night though.
@@leanderhoefler perfect thank you so much :) jep i was thinking about buying a sony 35mm 1.8
wow this was a great video!
Thanks for the feedback!
This is truly good advice. Maybe the best video about photography I have ever seen, I was not expecting that. Very rarely I watch a youtube video about photography that isn’t the same old stuff. Gratuliere. Auch sehr schöne Fotos. Danke
Oh das ist ganz nett, vielen Dank! Freut mich wirklich sehr
Did you test it in the rain? I need a bag that protects my tech when walking in the rain.
Just light drizzle, which is fine. But I‘d say it is with every bag: for some light rain it‘s a non issue, but for or longer rain sessions I would invest in a rainfly
Great bit of advice.
Glad you found it useful!
Well done. I bet you will make an excellent workshop leader.
I hope so haha
Great vídeo and nice photos and amazing tips.
Thanks so much, glad if it was helpful
Every beginner photographer would benefit from watching this video…hell, a lot of experienced photographers would benefit from these tips. Solid insight mate 🤌🏼
Thanks mate! Appreciate that. It was such an intense year, but learned so much
Hi, what are the 3 primes you are using?
Currently 21mm, 50mm and 90mm
these are great and wonderful tips! i just got back from vacation and wish i had watched this video before hand, oh well, will give it a try for my next vacation
The next vacation is hopefully coming soon then. Thank you!
Very informative, like your approach and video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
the shots in the alleyway when the subjects were backlit were so good! i’ve seen people say “expose for the highlights” to create sharper contrast in photos like that. what do they mean when they say “expose for the highlights”? does it mean just focusing your camera on the light? is there something technical i’m missing?
When exposing for the highlights you want to make sure that no part of the image is blown out (so nothing is pure white). So you make sure that the brightest parts are properly exposed which will often lead to the dark areas getting almost black. This can often create a really nice contrasty look.
Great tips 😁 totally agree, not all of us even have the time to only shoot in golden hour. Especially on a trip with limited number of days.
Yes, would be a lot of wasted time between sunrise and sunset otherwise haha
Thank you! I just returned from Naples. The sets is great and helps me a lot with my travel photography.
Awesome, Naples is wonderful!
Awesome video mate. Stellar tips in all three categories, beautiful examples of your work and a well produced video. 👏🏼
Thanks so much for the feedback, highly appreciate it!
Great city to showcase your thoughts.
Oh yes, loved Naples. Very high on my re-travel list!
There's so much to see. Even for me as a local, still finding hidden gems
I usually went for travel with a Sony A7RV, the 20mm 1.8, the 35mm 1.4 GM and the 85mm 1.8 Zeiss Batis. Not really too heavy, but i wanted to downsize even more. So I ordered the 24mm 2.8 G, the 40mm 2.5 G and the Sigma 90mm 2.8 DG DN. The 40mm and the 90mm are much better than i expected, especially the 90mm which is a real bargain! Also the 40mm can sometimes replace my 35mm GM, although I find it a bit to narrow for my taste. I really love 35mm as a standard focal length. A huge disappointment however was the 24mmG Lens. Maybe the worst lens Sony ever made. Terrible distortion. So I quickly returned it. Perhaps I will give the Sigma 20mm 2.0 DG DN a try in the future to finally replace my Sony 20mm 1.8. Saving size and weight is always a compromise.
Yes the 40 and the 90 are really impressive optically. Though I never really had a problem with the 24mm - of course not as flawless as the other two but it was fine. But I bet the 20mm is a great choice, I also now much prefer 20mm over 24mm
I bought my first DSLR back in 2019 and sice then I see myself as a photographer, but with very irregular shooting possibilites and sometimes I still lack that creative direction I want to go while on my city trips. I think your video finally gave me an idea on how to get that feel of what's worth to capture and more important: How I wanna capture it. Do you have any more tips on what makes an interesting subject and what to look out for?
That's great to hear. The most important thing in my experience is to shoot as much as possible, since that will ultimately increase the number of compositions you see. Finding subjects is a big topic for sure. Personally I often simply look for interesting light. I love shooting small scenes and everyday details, simply when the light is nice. I think there is a lot of beauty in finding the extraordinary in the mundane. So look for good light and work from there. Quite literal trash can be a pretty subject if colors and lights are good imo. Also I've learned that things that catch your eye (even if you can't really say why) often are also nice subjects. In the end there was something about them that made you double check. Hope that helps and happy photography!
Really good video. Practical and to the point. Not any fluff, wasted time or overly long exposition. Lots of UA-camrs could learn from this.
Oh thanks! Really dislike if videos are overly long with little information. So I try to keep everything as compact as possible
Excellent advice! The advice to 'think in sets' including establishing / intro shots, life of the place, and details was particularly helpful.
Thanks! Yes, this also really put a new perspective on how I approach my travel photography
These tips are golden, Leander! So helpful, great explanations and shots 👏
Thank so much for the feedback, appreciate it!
As for packing light, my preference is the Sigma 18-50 f2.8. It's small, light, has a fairly wide zoom range and most importantly a constant aperture so I can zoom in without feeling like I'm compromising on light gathering. I prefer primes when actually shooting, but I can't easily justify bringing multiple primes when a single tiny zoom can do 95% of the same job.
Definitely a good pick. The 24-70mm range would also be everything I need for my photography. But my brain just thinks in primes, I simple don‘t get the same shots with a zoom. A bit more of a hassle but worth it for my photography!
And of course, your phone is part of packing light.
Indeed, started to use my phone a lot for B-Roll shots for these videos. It‘s really powerful after all and much easier to bring than a second body+lens
@@leanderhoeflerwould you ever do a video specifically about phone photography id love to see it
All good advice but I don't understand the penchant for carrying multiple primes and having to change them in the field or having to decide in advance which one to bring for the day, when versatile, high-quality zooms are readily available. Steve McCurry, perhaps the greatest living "travel" photographer, shoots with a 24-70 zoom. I throw my mirrorless camera with a similar zoom , cleaning cloth, spare battery, and polarizer in a small sling and I am good to go. Also some of my best city photos were taken during morning and evening blue hour when the lights are on and the tourists aren't around, so I suggest adding a small travel tripod to your kit. Mine fits easily in my carryon bag and has proven invaluable.
Absolutely, I‘d also say a 24-70mm is probably the best one lens solution. Bringing 3 primes (a wide, standard and telephoto) is just a personal preference of mine. I work much better with primes and can‘t accustom to using a zoom. About the tripod - I don‘t see the need for one tbh. Image stabilization is so good in mirrorless cameras that even second long exposures are doable hand held. And high ISOs are also a non-issue. So I much rather safe the weight.
