Bikepacking the New River Trail State Park in Virginia
In this video, I'm taking a 3-day, 2-night bikepacking trip in the New River Trail State Park in southwest Virginia.
Come along for the ride as I go from the Draper entrance of the park down to Fries stopping to camp and relax in the Millrace campground at Foster Falls.
This Rails-to-Trail linear park offers easy peddling and beautiful scenery as the trail follows the historic New River along much of the path.
I used a new Spider rack, cradle and dry bag system from @aeroebikepack to carry my gear on my bike which worked great!

We have always enjoyed cycling along the trail. Wonder how much has been lost due to the flooding?
Good question. I have not heard. Let's hope it was not too bad. The Creeper Trail was devastated.
Here's what's posted on the park web site: The trail from Cliffview office (mile marker 49) in Galax to 0.5 miles north of Dannelly Park (mile marker 46) will be closed for trail work starting Thursday, Oct. 31 through Friday, Nov. 8. The park trail is now open from Galax to Fries Junction; Fries access to Low Water Bridge (trail only); Ivanhoe to Austinville; Shot Tower to Big Reed Island trestle; Allisonia to Dora Junction (Pulaski access). Dannelly Park and Cliffview campground are also open. Foster Falls upper and lower boat ramps are now open and the Foster Falls picnic area. Roughly 25 miles of New River Trail State Park have reopened to the public after Hurricane Helene caused significant damage to the trail. Visitors can now enjoy hiking, biking and horseback riding along the following sections: - Roughly 9 miles from the Galax park entrance to the Gambetta park entrance. This portion of the trail includes Chestnut Creek Falls. - Roughly 3 miles from mile marker 33 through mile marker 29. This portion of the trail includes the Ivanhoe park entrance, Ivanhoe River Bridge, and Austinville park entrance. - Roughly 12 miles from the Shot Tower park entrance to mile marker 13. This portion of the trail includes Foster Falls. - Roughly 8 miles from mile marker 10 to the Dora Junction park entrance. This portion of the trail includes the Dalton Bridge, Sloan Creek Trestle, Draper park entrance, McAdams Trestle and Peak Creek Trestle.
Park at the falls next time and ride a different direction each day. Keep your gear, water and food in your car.
Thanks. Sound plan.
Great video! I was hoping you would encounter some horses and show proper trail etiquette when approaching horses! Some bikers have no idea how important it is to speak when approaching horses because horses see things as predators!!
Thank you! Wheels Yield to Heels.
@@woodycarr I love that saying!! Never heard that!!💗🤠💗
Great video, is there anything you did regarding bear safety during your camp?
Thank you! The Millrace Campground where I stayed is primitive with no vehicular access to the campsites and no showers or bathhouses. However, there were no bear boxes for storing food so I suspect bears in the campground are not typically a problem. That said, I always use a LOKSAK OPSAK odor-proof bag to help critter-proof my food against raccoons, squirrels, and mice. I did hang my food bag on of the poles in the site but it was not a typical "bear bag hang" from a tall tree like I would use in a more wilderness areas. Hope that helps.
Nice video. You didn’t miss much. Pulaski to Draper is ho hum, however the junction to Galax is beautiful
Thanks! I do regret not going to Galax. Next time for sure!
Is this trail paved?
The trail is a hard crushed cinder surface but not paved.
Great video. We live near the Virginia Creeper Trail and ride there a lot but just heard about the New River Trail. Can’t wait to go! Might have to skip the really long trestle though.
Thanks! I love the Virginia Creeper Trail! I'm sure you will enjoy the New River Trail State Park. It's worth the time to visit.
i really like the new river trail. I have ridden it many times. i have stayed at foster falls a few times to. Look nice video, and thanks for sharing. Look, i noticed your dual suspenion mt bike. nice bike for the trails, but you are out of your element on this kind of bike. It's like putting lip stick on a pig and telling the sow she's pretty!! You need a hybrid bike, or a hard tail mt bike, and better yet a gravel adventure bike. But if you really want to ride in style get you a nice touring bike. that kind of mt bike is the worst choice you could have made to bike pack a rail trail. anyhow, glad you had a good time, and thanks for sharing!! no pun intended toward you or your bike, but just saying!!
i do like your gear!!, but why did you not go to galax? just asking? dat tent looked like it was fairly thin, and leads me to believe it would leak a little.
Thank you for your comments.
I used to think like that until I watched the tour divide this year, it was won on a 120mm, that's only 10mm shorter than his. I think the winner was riding a Top Fuel, that got me rethinking. Mostly everyone else was on a gravel bike@@princepage632
Great video….enjoyable and informative. New River Trail is on my list for this fall. This has been helpful for sure.
Thank you! I'm glad you found it useful!
the campground around the 20 minute mark, did I see poles set up for hammock camping?
Yes indeed, @TheBane1979. The Millrace campground at Foster Falls has 6 X 6 poles with eyebolts for hammocks - three each on the campsite.
@@woodycarr awesome! I’m heading that way this weekend and hammock camping is my preferred set up. I also have the durston x-mid for when I can’t find trees
@@TheBane1979 Enjoy your trip!
I notice the action camera mounted to the bar while you're recording, what camera are you recording with?
ah, I asked too soon. You have two action cameras right?
@@TheBane1979 Yes, one on a neck mount and one on the handlebar.

Great job! Thanks for sharing
Thanks, John!
Great Video must get out on my bike soon.
Thank you!
Enjoyed the video. Looks like a good tune up ride for the GAP/C&O. I did an out an back on the New River Trail from Pulaski a few years ago. I was coming back up I81 from a work trip. I just road 15 or so miles and turned around. Question. Does one need anything special for over night parking? I have an annual state park pass. But may be a copy of a camping reservation too?
Thanks @mkenyon7429. Overnight parking at the various entry points requires a fee or state park pass. I used my annual pass at the Draper entrance. I just hung it on my rearview mirror. If you park at the Millrace campground they give you a parking pass as part of the camping fee. Hope that helps.
Thanks for the nice video. We are returning to the New River next month for bikepacking, with our dogs…. I love that place. We share a lot of the same gear. I even use a Tenkara rod, Dragontail.
Thanks @Tennessee-Explorer! Have a great trip next month. It really is a special trail. I just got started with Tenkara. Still a lot to learn!
@@woodycarr We look forward to that trip for sure. We bikepacked the VA Creeper Trail recently, which is wonderful as well. Those videos are up now. As far as Tenkara, I recommend carrying a spare tip section. You will get hung up and break it eventually. I try to only cast places where I can walk to my line if needed to pull on it directly instead of using the rod. But that certainly limits where you fish. I love the simplicity of it. I also carry a 6’ telescoping rod with a spinning reel to use other places where Tenkara won’t work well.
@@Tennessee-Explorer Great advice, thanks! My family and I rode the Virginia Creeper Trail several years ago. Might need to go back and do it as a bikepacking trip. It was very beautiful!

What time of year did you go? I noticed the cold and the snow near freezing temp, what month was this? I'm going this August through hike on Shenandoah. I'm guessing it never gets below 45°.
My trip was in late October. You will probably not see lows below 55 degrees at the highest elevations in August. Enjoy your trip!
Like the view from the top.
Thanks! It is a pretty view.
The tracking looks really good!
Thanks! It's a little weird to let it do its own thing and just trust the tracking and obstacle avoidance. But it works amazingly well.

Woaaaah this is so cool haha 😆

Awesome shots! Have you been doing any backpacking?
Thanks! Finally have a trip coming up next month! Video to come.
I am planning a section hike in Shenandoah. Can you tell me why you decided to carry 8 days of food rather than resupplying inside the park?
The obvious place to resupply would have been Big Meadows. I was under the impression at that time that the wayside was going to be closed for renovations. As it turned out, it closed a couple of weeks after my trip and reopened the following season. If I were doing it again, I would resupply at Big Meadows. Do keep in mind the cost will be higher and the selection will be a bit more limited in the park. Thanks for watching the video!
@@woodycarr Thank you for sharing your experience and insight!

Have you found a mount for your handle bars for the Skydio 2 Beacon?
The only one I've found so far is this 3-D printed version www.dirtyjdesigns.com/products/handlebar-mount-for-skydio-2-beacon
This is the SNP through-hike I want to trek. Thank you for sharing.
Just finished watching your Shenandoah backpacking videos. Very Nice! I visited Shenandoah twice this year while passing through. I have driven the entire Skyline Drive and did two short day hikes (Discovery Trail Loop and Stony Man). I enjoyed the park so much, I am planning on coming back (from Connecticut) for a backpacking trip in December. I'm planning on spending one of my nights in the Doyles River/Jones Run area. Thanks for sharing your adventures.
Thanks, John! The Doyles River/Jones Run is really great. Worth the visit!
Thanx for the video. I have ordered the Skydio 2 to pair with my Autel EVO. Sadly, Skydio has put back delivery to no earlier than December. 🙁
It will be worth the wait. The tracking capabilities and obstacle avoidance are unmatched. However in my mind, it really is a very specialized second drone. Your EVO is a perfect complement. The EVO will perform much better at father distances. The WIFI transmission on the Skydio 2 breaks up fairly quickly. It's really a drone for tracking or getting really tight shots close to your position. For that, it's great. You will be amazed at what you will fly it through... with confidence.
@@woodycarr Yes - I get god range and precision control with the EVO. But, I am hoping to get into and maneuver thru tight areas with S2, The tracking is a secondary consideration for me, but hay... mebbe I'll give it a try and be able to use it.
Great video do you know where that piped spring was or any other springs that are running well in the video. i drink from springs all the time raw and have been doing so for the past year never got sick im going to visit family in late September and i dont want to drink bottled tap or filtered water thanks :)
Thank you! The spring at 11:42 is at mile 947.3 NB (a couple of miles north of Pass Mountain Hut.) There are a lot of springs in the park. The Guthooks app is a good resource for finding springs along the Appalachian Trail.
@@woodycarr wow thank you so much i wish you the best on your future journeys i hope everything your looking for comes your way :)
What were the dates of your trip? I'm hoping to be going in October and trying to plan with good chances of seeing the Fall foliage. Also, was it hard to find stealth camping spots?
October 19th thru 26th, 2018. The Fall color was better for the last three days of my hike. Stealth spots were not too hard to find. I used the Guthooks app to help find spots. Worth the $9 for the section IMHO. Have fun on your trip!
@@woodycarr Yes, I have Guthooks and it's a lifesaver ! Thanks so much for the info.
I just went and posting my version of the trail. I am subbing to watch your other adventures. You walked right over that crevice at the summit like it was nothing! Wow, It turns out that "Compton" is much more peaceful, serene and rural than the west coast gangster rappers would have us believe! Lol. Seriously though, I back packed it during a major winter cold spell in February of 2007. We did about 1/3 of it from about 33 miles southward from Front Royal, through the northernmost area, but we took a side trail out to a spot we had pre-parked our 2nd car. One guy had a digital weather device, that recorded our 1st night at 6°f, the 2nd day got up to a very windy 22° and our 2nd night warmed up to a balmy 8°... Day 3 got up into the low to mid 30s, practically tropical! I had just bought a Jetboil v1, and although it worked, it cooked only about 1/2 the normal speed, due to decreased isobutane fuel effectiveness at cold temps.
I liked your videos and decided to subscribe. What type of camera are you using? Do you plan on doing more hikes in Shannadoh? I would like to hike with you.

I found this guide good for planning my trip. www.nps.gov/shen/planyourvisit/upload/SHEN_BCTrip-AT_through_SNP_average_17_miles_per_day_E104-508.pdf I recommend getting the Guthook Guide app as well. It was useful for planning and was great to have on the trail. That app does not require a cell phone connection to work which is great because coverage is very spotty in the park. You can purchase the section you need for about $9. Just download the maps before you go. atlasguides.com/appalachian-trail/ Hope that helps a little.
