Why I Quit My Job as a Technician

Not another tired "I'm leaving the industry because everything sucks!" video. There's enough negative viewpoints about being an automotive tech on the internet, somebody has to tell the kids it's still a great way to make a living.
Why am I Selling my Grom After Only One Season?
Переглядів 4962 місяці тому
Today I tried something a little different. I recorded a short ride and created a voiceover sharing some of my thoughts on the Honda Grom I've owned since May and what I think is next for my motorcycle ownership experience.
A Day in the Life of a Volkswagen Technician in 2024
Переглядів 4,5 тис.3 місяці тому
Sit down and enjoy as I take you along to work with me. In this video I wrap up a thermostat housing job from the day before, I perform a basic service and tire rotation, and an occupant detection campaign. It wasn't an extremely busy or productive day, but I hope you enjoy seeing what a day in the life of a Volkswagen technician looks like.

Very good thanks 👍
You’re welcome, thanks for checking out my channel :)
Nice shine bro keep up the good work
Thanks man!
I have a couple of the new style 100 tooth like yours, they are great
It feels great so far, I’m hoping it doesn’t make the tool weaker.
Is there a reason you prefer the traditional style vs the quick release ratchets? I can’t decide which I want to buy
I find the button on the top of a quick release ratchet gets in the way. In tight spaces I don’t want my ratchet to eject my socket.
“My dude hooked me up”
Shout out to the homie Jason!
I want job in foreign country what I do.?
I’m sorry to say I don’t have any advice for you. I’ve never worked in a country outside of canada.
I trying Volkswagen Techanican❤️ I live in Myanmar. I work in Volkswagen Myanmar.
That’s awesome! Thanks for watching my video. I really enjoyed my time with VW and there are definitely aspects of the brand that I miss. The wiring diagrams were the best I’ve ever used!
@@jeremyblatz Thanks you appreciate for my comment ❤️
You’re welcome! Best of luck!
Cool, the VW cup video did the job but wasn’t the greatest at breaking down all the steps.
I wasn’t able to find a good explanation when I did my first one so I decided to make the video I would have liked to find. Hope it was informative.
Do you have to buy your tools by yourself?
There are a lot of specialty tools that the manufacturers requires the dealer to have but all the general tools we use are purchased by the techs. It’s not hard for a tech to accumulate several thousands of dollars worth of tools in their career. I’m on the lower end still and I’ve easily spent $6,000+ in tools.
glad you were able to work your way up the Volkswagen group keep up the good work bro
Thank you! I think I’ll stop here, I don’t need to work for Bugatti 😂
@@jeremyblatz maybe u do bro how much people can say they work for Bugatti ?
@fb2javii999 I’m sure there aren’t many. I guess we’ll have to wait and see if I join that small group of techs.
Congrats Jeremy, ,,,,what's your personal opinion on the Taos ? Thanks.
Well, I am currently leasing one. I think it’s a good affordable small crossover. It’s a little short on trunk space and rear seat room. But comfortably seats 4 adults. I wish they made a Taos R but I guess I’ll just have to build my own if I want it that bad 😂
@@jeremyblatz I have the SE with the blackout roof, I hope the 1.5 t is a good reliable engine.
@tommyg1814 since they fixed the head gasket issue from the earlier models they seem to be holding up quite well. I’m at 30,000 km on mine with no issues.
@@jeremyblatz one last question, ,,are you using the 0w/20 euro oil or something else.
@tommyg1814 yeah, we use the 0W20 in Canada.
If i was Volkswagen I would hate to lose a tech like you
I appreciate the sentiment! I don’t think they were thrilled but they understood I following my dream.
VW doesn’t like good techs. All the people at my dealer are stupid assholes
Well, congratulations on this. UA-cam just sent me this after months of nothing. I'll have to ring the bell or something. Anyway, you doing an oil change reminded me that I have to figure out why the bottom of my Golfs oil pan is wet. Looking forward to the next video!
I’ve decided to start posting as much as I can and see what I can build on this platform. I appreciate the sub! What engine does your Golf have?
@@jeremyblatz It's a '16 Golf TSI 1.8. In Canada. Hoping it's something I can fix in the back yard!
Check the oil cooler area. There’s a few gaskets in there that are a common issue. Cheap fix, just takes a bit of time.
@@jeremyblatz Nothing drastic. It was just the drain plug leaking 😂
@stephenmorrissey1254 I’ve seen that plenty of times lol
How many hours labour is this head according to VW?
Do you have the wiring diagram for the harness? I'm working on the same thing and need to know which color was on the top and bottom pin.
Pin 1 on the differential pressure sensor is yellow/green pin 2 is brown and pin 3 is yellow/brown.
In referencing pin layout. Is pin 1 at the top of the sensor towards the flat side of the plug, which would be the topside of harness. Also the wire colors on mine is yellow/grey, brown and yellow brown.
What year and model are you working on? The connector will have 1,2&3 etched into it.
2015 passat tdi. I don't have the replacement plugs yet, so I wasn't sure if the pins will be numbered.
If the connector is OEM it will have the numbers on it. I only have the wiring diagram for one of the dpf sensors through all data for some reason. So if you are dealing with the other one I unfortunately can’t give you that information.
Im in the market for a MK7.5 or 8. Which sub model would you avoid?
We only got the GTI and R here for mk8 so I can’t speak to the other sub models. I don’t think there’s anything to avoid with the 7.5 though. All three engine options are great and I’m not aware of any major issues with that chassis. The best advice I can give you is buy the cleanest best maintained one you can find. If you buy a 1.4 be aware of timing belt service due date. It may help in a negotiation.
@@jeremyblatz thanks dude
@cheesuskrust7021 you’re welcome. Happy car shopping!
I'd get the best equipped manual 7.5 you can find with the 1.4 turbo petrol. Very reliable with normal maintenance
Definitely a great option!
Congrats on the new job. Nice video, the mic wasn't a problem but the camera was angled too low it was hard to watch.
Thank you so much! I’m going to fix that in my next riding video, I thought I had the angle better adjusted when I set off.
My god they complicate things but great video . I have a 2024 Taos with the 1.5 . Are they holding up quite well ?
It is a bit of a complicated procedure. I also have a 2024 Taos, and I haven’t heard of anything major going wrong on them.
@@jeremyblatz jeremy thank you for the reply, love your channel.
Thank you so much! I’m glad you’re enjoying my content :)
How much and do you ship to the u.s.? Lol
With how weak the Canadian dollar is it might actually work out in your favour 😂
@@jeremyblatz 🤔🤔
Dude - if you have longer videos - please make them. These are super enjoyable. More in-depth, more step by step. More everything. Ride in, ride home, everything bro.
Thank you so much! I appreciate the love. I plan on doing more videos at work when I can. I’m waiting for my 90 days at my new job before I try it also I’m just getting familiar with the processes at stuff with Porsche. I’ll put out what I can. As far as riding in to work and riding home that might have to wait a bit. The Grom isn’t my commuter anymore since I have to take the highway into work now.
Tilt your camera up bro, seeing your legs in the shot is cringe.
Yeah, it was much lower than I thought I had it. If I do another one I’ll be sure to correct that. Thanks for the advice :)
Hi, thanks for the video, it's great. Can you please tell me what is the time/km interval to carry out this procedure, depending on the region/country/climate where the car is driven. thank you very much.
I believe the interval is 200,000 km or something like that. It may differ in different parts of the world though.
There is no interval by this engines. You only get the advice to check the belt by 210k km if its ok by looking at it. The gasoline belt dont get so much torque like the diesel engines.
@tjorven-jornabel6882 it may only be listed as an inspection in the maintenance schedule but I don’t know a tech that wouldn’t replace it at that interval. I wouldn’t want to take that gamble.
Such a small engineering firm..
Haha they started out small :P
Canada accent, right?
Yep! I’m from Southwestern Ontario.
@@jeremyblatz I am from Europe, Denmark … Its a joy to hear that accent.. btw I am a big Norm MacDonald fan.. and I ride the Honda ST 125 Dax, so we are Honda mini Bike brothers - well, at least until you sell the Grom ..
@bennythomsen5974 that’s a pretty cool looking bike. We only get the monkey, trail and grom here in Canada. I’ll be sad when I have to say goodbye to mine.
Wtf. That looks like it was dipped in liquid tape or some sort of black puddy put all over it. 😂😂
It’s pretty wild actually!
Nope I would have done it in such a way it would have been usable
How could I have done it differently?
Har set de pdf sensorer sode til og også hvor slangeren der til var smeltet med hul i men ikke det der den har været varm :-)
I believe this one was cracked where the hose attaches since there was a break visible. Having that break off allowed all the hot exhaust gases come up the pipe. I’m surprised this was the only damage done.
I love doing those pods recalls, pays like 2.5 hours and I can do it in an hour with the seat in the car.
Yeah, they weren’t too bad! I hadn’t tried doing it in the car before though.
Great idea say it louder so vw can bring the labor time down
@@firstlast--- I doubt they would bring it down because a lot of tech’s complained of the original labor time given for the campaign it went from 105 to 150 TU.
Better safe than sorry. Yeah, I was one of them. They missed a labour op for their own workshop manual stated procedure. Did you guy get back paid as well?
@@unclepeanut15 It is extremely dumb no matter what manufacturer you work for to talk about how you shortcut jobs under warranty. All it takes is one person to say something to get someone's attention. I can't stand when people do that do you really have to be that guy
More vids !
I’ll probably do mostly shorts for now, there’s a lot to learn with Porsche so that’s going to take most of my mental bandwidth.
How long were you with VW? And do your certifications/rank carry over to Porsche?
I was with VW a total of about 5 years. Unfortunately none of my training carried over so I’m starting from square one.
@@jeremyblatz crazy i had a friend who went to Porsche his ase transferred wit him since it’s standard across the board
In Canada we have to go through a three year apprenticeship program and pass a final exam to get our 310s license. That license allows you to work in the trade anywhere you want. The brands have their own training programs to ensure their technicians are fully versed in the brand. VW training unfortunately doesn’t carry over to Porsche.
@@jeremyblatz Yeah that alone makes me never want to switch brands. On top of relearning the brand and all the little nuances all the common problems how the manufacturer puts things together. No thanks lol
It’s a lot of work to make the switch. I’ll probably stay with Porsche for the rest of my career, one switch is plenty lol
Always the thermostat housing It started in 1993 i believe on golf mk3 and the havent foxed that problem yet Thats how you know the maker os crappy
We’re only seeing thermostat housings on the 2 litre engines in the Tiguan currently…
A 2022 Taos needing a head gasket? SMH
It’s a pretty common issue on the first year 1.5 in both the Taos and the Jetta. There was a problem with the head gaskets causing a coolant leak on the firewall side of the block. Some of them even had a mount contacting the head preventing it from clamping down properly. I did about 15 or so during my time at VW.
@@jeremyblatzwhat about the 2023 model 🥶
I think they sorted it out for 24. I’m pretty sure I’ve done a few 2023’s though.
VW not reliable anymore
Is that a MK4.5 City Golf in the background at 2:48?? How often do you see foreign market models come through?
It sure is! I live in Canada and the City Golf was sold here new. But we did see a 2015 or 2016 TDI Passat come from Mexico, that was pretty cool to see. It didn’t have any of the emissions controls that our cars had.
@@jeremyblatz ohhh I didn't notice you were in Canada haha
Yeah, we’ve gotten some slightly different models/options than the U.S.
Is it the same for the passat gte CUCK engine 1.4 tsi?
We didn’t get the Passat with a 1.4 in our market but the 1.4 that we have is much more simple. You can lock the cams in place and there’s a pin for the crank. The cranks can still move backwards as well.
Thermostat housing... I told the dealer over and over I smelled coolant and they couldn't find it. Warranty ends and suddenly it's the thermostat housing which just happens to cost $1800 to fix. And is the most common fault on VW's. The dealer basically lied to me repeatedly. And this is why this is my first and last VW I will ever buy.
I’m sorry you had a bad experience. I suggest finding another dealer, their cars are still really good! You can also call corporate to try to get reimbursed.
Get that paper bro, looking forward to the Porsche repairs.
Hopefully I can share my work on this channel :)
I see you accepted a position at Porsche Still working on VWs then 😂😂😂
I filmed this a while ago but didn’t get around to editing and posting it. My first day at Porsche is Monday.
That joke totally went over my head at first lol. They do share some parts but they’re quite different.
Smile....love that enjoyment of his truck and his friendly jerk keeping 3 hp from his dream !!! Put super glue on his door handle and bring us the pay back...good guys doing guy things.
Yeah, we like to razz each other!
oil bath timing belt?
I should have used a bung to cap off the cam adjuster but it drops a decent amount of oil just taking the cover off. Had to clean it off pretty thoroughly.
@@jeremyblatz I'm Italian, I didn't explain myself well. there are 2 engines 1.5 tsi and the 1.5 tsi evo or evo 2 I don't remember, I wanted to know if the timing belt in this video is in contact with the engine oil, or not, because I understand that the 1.5 tsi evo has a timing belt Contact with engine oil such as Peugeot and Ford engines.
Oh I understand now. This one isn’t in contact with oil, it’s sealed off.
@@jeremyblatz Thank you, you were very kind, do you know in which year they started doing it in contact with oil? If you don't know, thanks anyway, what year is this car? Thanks again
@MAIEMI We don’t have the oil contact timing belt on Canada so I can’t answer that question unfortunately. This was either a 2022 or 2023.
10” knipex cobras are my favorite and probably most used tool
I need to up my plier game for sure! A coworker of mine had a pair of snap-on plier wrenches that were a game changer.
@@jeremyblatz I’m not a mechanic and have never used snap on tools. But I can say I will never buy another set of pliers that aren’t knipex. They’re that good
I’ve heard good things about them, I haven’t tried any of their products yet though.
Hi Jeremy, which engine code is that? Is it a DADA?
This engine’s code is DNKA.

I hardly see anything more than 10 years old at the dealership I’m at. We do have the occasional bus, Beetle, or Thing come by but I don’t typically do any work on those.
My brain
That’s definitely more important than my pocket screwdriver.
Your brain is stupid
Machinist here. I use my 6” pocket scale more than any tool in my box 😅
I’m not even going to pretend I know what that would be used for.
My Mac pick
There’s at least a million uses for them.
I have a 1/4" cheap-o Stanley screwdriver that I heated and bent into maybe a 75-degree angle; I use it just about every day for SOMETHING.
Modified tools can be some of the most useful, I’ve got a few custom tools as well.
Is that box a Rousseau Metal or a Lista?
It’s a Rousseau, the built ins are kind of nice but the quality isn’t on par with with my old snap on roll cart.
@@jeremyblatz i like rousseau mostly for the slides, they hold a lot of weight, but the config of drawers placement isnt the best on most of their boxes. I still prefer Mac and Snap on boxes
My biggest gripe is how shallow the top drawer is. I have to lay down so many tools because I don’t have enough depth.
