I wonder, if the problem is not the thermistor, but the putty drying out or the thermistor moving out of place.

Hey you didn’t show where you removed the old thermistor connector. Also where you plug in the new one. Da!!! poor demonstration.

Your method is a lot simpler than putting the new thermistor through the same pathway and clips that hold the old one in place. If I ever have to do this replacement again ( let it be many years til it needs it!), I will do your short cut!😊
