Melodie D'Amour - Guy Lombardo And His Royal Canadians - New Year's Eve. 1957-1958
I was 22 and took my soon to be wife on an early date to this event . Ran into my mom and dad there ; Never to this day has the music of that evening been surpassed or even equaled . I believe that he said " Sweetest music this side of heaven "
I'm sure a lot of people considered Guy Lombardo outdated by this time -- Dick Clark's NYRE was, after all, concieved as a younger and hipper alternative -- but his music was no more out of date in the 70s than "classic rock" of the 70s and 80s is today! Note also that Guy was 75 years old when he did his final NYE show.... Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney, Keith Richards, and other classic rockers are even older today.
Total Class. I remember my parents would put us to bed and they and their friends would be partying ushering in the New Year’s with Guy Lombardo
Funny how this brings back memories of being allowed to stay up 'til midnight on New Years Eve when I was just a kid - This was always on for New Years Eve. Mom and Dad loved listening to Guy Lombardo, guess it brought back memories for them from when they were younger.....RIP Guy Lombardo, still remember New Years past with you...
It certainly was “The Sweetest Music This Side Of Heaven!”
I stumbled upon this several hours ago as the year 2025 started … and just crazy and pretty sad to realize that most of these people in this 1970s program - are long dead now. Most seem to have been born around the year 1890-1920
I too watched guy Lombardo as a kid because my parents watched it they didn't go out on nye. I enjoyed his show so much that now I don't go out anymore on nye and I put on one of his old full nye shows from UA-cam and watch that instead of the nonsense that passes for nye shows today
BUT!!?? NO "AULD LANG SYNE"!!?? Dan Rather noted Guy, New Years Eve & Auld Lang Syne in latest blog - with link for THIS
My grandmother worked there. I wonder if she was in the crowd 😌
They need to bring this show back and also bring this great orchestra back to television screens someday in the near future. CBS hasn’t had a proper New Year’s Eve special since the demise of Happy New Years America in 1996 when Disney bought ABC.
It was also Ben Grauer's last New Year's Eve appearance.
Back when New Years Eve show had normal great entertainers
when i was in grade school i watched his show every week and wrote him letters....lol
It was an article of faith in the Bitow and Sakowicz relatives. You all watched Bishop Sheen and you watched Perry Como
My mother's favorite band. I grew up listening to them, have seen them in concert twice, and was a faithful watcher on New Year's Eve for all the times they were on the telly. They used to stay at the Roosevelt Hotel in NYC for the New Year's Eve show, and we stayed there when we went to the World's Fair. Lots of good memories. Rest in Peace, Marge.
What wonderful dance music!!
Guy passed about four months later and this ballroom the Stork Club on Lake Erie which he set a record attendance burned down within a year. Wow, so sad.
The orchestra changed somewhat when Carmen Lombardo passed away in April 1971.
Professional Entertainers doing what they do best. Respecting their audience!
Very nice video, thanks for sharing.
Holy smokes, this takes me back ... Guy Lombardo new years eve ... good days.
I still think Lombardo is the King of NYE and Dick Clark is the Prince of NYE … Regardless they still play Lombardos version At the ball drop each NYE and on Dick Clacks rocking New Year’s Eve
This was a true American tradition. Something we'll never see again.
guy Lombardo, TV, 1965
Love..this .tape
Growing up, my mom & dad always had a new years party. Guy Lombardo was the center piece of the night. They would have their friends over and the other kids and myself would sneak down the stairs to watch. Many happy memories. Guy Lombardo will always be new years eve for me.
Yes, kids, that was the quality of video on TVs back then. I miss these shows. Watched them so many years.
He was for the old folks
I am 45 and have been a fan since high school.
1977 was a bad year. Both Guy and Bing Crosby died, both men closely associated with the holidays. Plus, there was Elvis.
Priceless...thank you for posting this !!! A teal treat !!
Ty Lemley does such a nice job on this song
LOOK Magazine was a bjg deal back then.
I miss Look Magazine.
Attended 1972 concert in So.Bend, In. Met him afterwards, shook his hand, and told him that my fav.Lombardo records were those which had Carmen as vocalist. He agreed that those were special to him.
I guess this was taken shortly after Bill Flannigan’s departure from the band since the accordion player is there.
There were two episodes filmed. Both within a year of each other. One with Bill Flannigan and one without. The episode with Bill Flannigan has Peter playing Accordion on the Theme and very first number and then it immediately switches to Bill Flannigan during the audience applause. Which means they edited two different videos together. That opening tune, My Kind Of Girl, was likely recorded on the same day as this video as everything looks the same. So, ultimately, both videos did not air on television until after Bill was gone. The Summer of 1965.
People today fawn over Louis Armstrong but in fact when he had his own band - not long - he closely patterned everything after Lombardo 's band because of its precision and discipline. An " inconvenient truth" as "Al Gore" ( anyone remember him ?) used to say.LOL🤣
Rest in Peace Guy!<3 What a Guy!
An icon that will never be replaced.
Growing up I loved watching Guy Lombardo with my grandmother. It was a wonderful way to celebrate the New Year. Especially listening to talk about her youth.
Thaks for posting this1 My Mom loved perry Como. I was just barely 1year old when this was on. They don't make shows like this anymore....what a shame!
I grew up on long island and my cousins lived in plandome and Kenny gardner was a good friend of my uncle. Kenny would always come over and was such a nice person. A few times i was invited to go to Guy Lombardos house in Freeport. Always had a wonderful time there
I like guy Lombardo singing Marie.his band the best of the best.
I was born too late and in the wrong place... I've been Guy Lombardo's greatest fan ever since I first heard his band. There aren't many other bands who could compare with these wonderful musicians. 🇦🇺
A trip down memory lane. Thank you Guy Lombardo and brothers, and Band for your music all the years. "Rose's for a Blue Lady" May we remember President Carter today March 17, 2023 and his family as he is now on hospice. Thanks for this extradinary video with all these artists. ❤
Remember the days.
Still beautiful music!
Does anyone know what day it was? 'Cause I heard there's no electricity
It was also Ben Grauer's last broadcast.
First time I stayed up to watch the ball drop.
we want to go to times square to see the ball drop at 12:00md
weillhave plan it ahead of time
He almost made it to the next new year's celebrations(died 11/5/1977) Guy still looks good for being 74 (never saw this or any of his late in life performances before) The band is playing just great !! I'm a 78 record collector and am quite familiar with his music. Quite a few younger people on the dance floor. Wish I were there at the time. They also did great on "I Write the Songs" and "Feelings". Thanks for posting this gem !
brings back loving memories
