Welcome! My name is Baek -- Senior Analytics Manager at a Fortune 500 company by day, moonlighting as a violinist and teacher in the evening. In 2008, my 20-year music career was derailed by a neural illness, called focal dystonia (fd). It forced me to re-learn the violin using three fingers, and led me into a major career transition from music to the corporate world. Fast forward to now, although i still struggle with fd, I picked up the violin recently after a 15-year hiatus after my youngest asked me to play Yankee Doodle on the violin. Miraculously, my fingers felt much better after years of "not playing" and resting my brain -- and I've been at it ever since. I hope my journey inspires others to embrace change and follow their passions, no matter the obstacles.
Edward Elgar: La Capricieuse, Op. 17 (엘가 - 변덕스러운 여자) - Baek Kim 김백겸

Edward Elgar's La Capricieuse, Op. 17, is a charming piece for violin and piano, composed in 1891. The title, which translates to "The Capricious One," reflects the playful and mercurial character of the music. It showcases Elgar’s gift for lyricism and his ability to capture subtle emotional shifts within a light-hearted and virtuosic framework.
The piece was written during Elgar’s early career, a time when he was primarily known as a violinist and teacher. La Capricieuse was designed to appeal to the salon music market, which favored technically engaging yet accessible compositions. Its delicate charm, graceful melodies, and passages requiring agility make it both a display of virtuosity and a delightful listening experience.
The playful nature of the work aligns with its title, alternating between lively, skipping rhythms and tender, expressive phrases. La Capricieuse helped establish Elgar’s reputation as a composer and remains a popular encore piece, embodying the elegance and refinement of late Romantic violin repertoire.
