I think Rudeus was always a kid with memories of a previous life who thought he was a man placed in a new world. I say this because to me when Paul dies Rudeus is utterly destroyed and its especially apparent in the light novel. If he really was someone placed in a new world I doubt he would have built such strong love for his father (much stronger than the father of his past life)rather he would have seen Pauls death as the death of an old friend . At Pauls grave he says he sees himself as Pauls son and I think thats a realisation more than it is a change in how he thinks. Rudeus also thinks of himself as a bad son because he used memories of his previous life to act like an adult when he really was just a bratty kid. There are also other hints that make me think of him being this way such as it being apparent that he has a different brain and is effected by it like when he was young and could learn incredibly quickly.

Mushoku Tensei really out answering the question of "What would you do differently if you had another shot at life?" There's no second chances (unless you believe in reincarnation) but I think some people have asked that themselves. Where did it all go wrong? The thing is, they think they need to start all over to fix their life but you really don't. It doesnt take that long to lost weight, get a job, move out and find someone to love. A few years at best. A decade at the absolute worst. And don't tell you don't have time. People who'd like to be Rudues are people who admit they'd be willing to spend 20+ years fixing their life. That's how long you'd need to reach adulthood all over again, isn't it? Why fix your life in 20 years, when you can do it in 5? I believe in you. 40 is not too late. You don't need to restart your playthrough. You just need to fix your build

Someone finally gets it! It is not about redemption. Just read the title fully translated. The one quibble I have is with the Eris sex scene. I feel the scene was absolutely faithful to the novel. If you read the novels, it is unclear from his monologue that Rudeus understands whether he loves Eris or, more appropriately, the difference between love and lust. Only with human interaction do you understand the emotions behind sex so he was evolving but it wasn't until he sleeps with Eris that he does indeed understand he loves her. He goes through a long period of depression in which he fails to understand that he cannot sleep with a woman he doesn't love until after being with the prostitute. After that point, he realizes what sex means to him, and that he can only sleep with those he loves. He realizes later that he didn't get ED with Sara because he is traumatized but because he didn't love her, which he makes clear later in Season 3. He knows this after sleeping with Sylphie and confirms it with Roxy but doesn't verbalize it until volume 13, the first cour of season 3. Ed. I take that all back. You completely misunderstand Rudeus's perspective. I should have waited to the portion where you talk about Rudeus viewing himself as his previous person. He says specifically that he is a child with these memories from a past life in the final episode of the second season. Damned anime onlies. It's really simple: it's not a redemption story because the problem being solved is Rudeus's isolation from human relationships. He views others as NPCs because he did not participate in society. He gradually takes more responsibility passing the markers of adulthood that he failed to in his previous life. His secret is never giving up and never going it alone like he did in his previous life. That is the moral of the story. The author literally says that in the final volume. Live life like a drowning man, in the words of Rudeus's memoirs. You only have one chance so don't waste it. Who cares if others call you a scumbag if the others that you love are happy.

The light novel does everything better because you get way more inner dialogue from him. You get to see everything he is thinking and seeing and you get to have your own take on it. Another thing is that I feel like the first 13 ish novels are entirely backstory. (Basically everything animated right now) None of them involve the main story. It's volume 14, at turning point 4 when the story truly starts.

Omg finally someone realize it

Man I appreciate this type of character growth and change over time objectively, but I just cannot stand him. I dropped the manga way before it was brought up to become an anime. It was interesting, and immediately more serious than other Isekai from the get go. He was just so disturbing though. I know it’s about his change and that that’s not all the series has to offer. I know that, but the amount of perversion was so off-putting even without mentioning the children’s age. It’s just difficult for me to get past, even though I know he gets “slightly better”. Him “becoming” cool was never something I was worried about missing, I hate hyper-perversion in a character regardless of traits. Maybe it’s just not for me. I’ve gotta go back and catch up on Re:Zero.

I'm 10 months late but, fight you I will, eris considered it because the location of the blast was close to her home, which had people she was for sure thinking of. Rudy on the other hand was practiaclly in another state and probably didn't have that much worry for the new people he was staying with to consider the blat reaching the manor let alone his own family home. Take that Eris stan, she was just concerned as any one would be about her family that was close by... And there is also a chance she was lying to looks smart, its not far fetched.
