    There is NO SUCH THING as a "Grumman FM2 Wildcat'! The Grumman Wildcat was designated the "F4F". General Motors also made the Wildcat, and THEY are designated "FM2". Calling it a Grumman FM2 Wildcat makes as much sense as saying "Pontiac Camaro" or "Chevrolet Firebird". Stupid goofs like this expose you as noobs who only THINK they know things, but are too lazy to check their data.

    Superb plane and video, but I'm amazed that they fly surrounded by all those trees. It only needs a minor engine problem on the landing approach and the plane is certain to end up in the trees, with considerable damage, instead of, ideally, just putting it down on clear flat ground (a field).

    • @danam0228
      @danam0228 2 місяці тому

      Yeah, there's not much choice in New England. Trees or buildings take up most spaces. The Collings Foundation owns some of the land adjacent to the field and use it to drive some of their tanks and other armored vehicles around in the woods, and some of their neighbors and the town probably don't want them to cut down some of the trees anyway to act as a fence, help reduce noise that might effect neighbors. Generally speaking, people in New England including myself love trees, but should manage them, cut some down to avoid what some people have said will most likely happen again. A hurricane that occurred in 1938 knocking over many trees and causing lots of damage to private and public property

    Magnificent! Still flying, and must be pushing 110 years old at this stage. Lovely job by the restorer/pilot. Not forgetting the ground crew - I love that 'human-assisted u-turn at 7:30! I guess that's how they did it back in WW1 as well. I remember 'flying' the good old Nieup 28 in Red Baron 3D, it was my favourite plane in that game. Anyone else remember that game? It wonderfully evoked those days when aviation was simple: "Stick go forward, houses get big. Stick go back, houses get small." 🤣 Anyway, it's really something to finally see one of them for real, thank you so much for letting us see this slice of history. This video is probably the closest I'll ever get to one of these amazing planes.

    Pilots called it the "Old Pot" or "Pi**pot" because it was obsolete even before being put into service. We had no planes when Woodrow "He Kept Us From War" Wilson pushed us into the war. Pilots figured that the "28" meant their odds were one in twenty-eight of living long enough to get a more advanced plane, because the Germans were flying more advanced aircraft by the time American pilots "threw their hat in the ring" (an old term for accepting a challenge to fight, which inspired the squadron insignia on the side of this plane). There's a button on the control stick that cuts the ignition when pressed. If you look at old film of Nieuport formations, you see them moving up and down in relation to each other like merry-go-round horses as the pilots work the cut-off switch. Once in a while, releasing the button didn't bring the engine back to life.

    The reason there were no American combat aircraft in WW1 was the Wright Bros thought they were due a 20% royalty for every aircraft ever built that had a method for controlling roll, which was the real innovation of The Flyer. They had Glenn Curtiss wrapped up in a lengthy lawsuit, so ridiculous that Henry Ford gave Curtiss his legal team for free. Finally a judge threw it out so America could get into the air war. And Henry Ford make a bundle making engines....
