Aldous On The Farm Just Off Orwell Lane
United States
Приєднався 3 тра 2018
I am Aldous On The Farm, & From Just Off Orwell Lane I’m here to talk about a small corner of Americana - Golden Age of Radio, Pulp Magazines of the 1920s-1950s, Comic Books, & Classic Entertainment. Time is a precious commodity for everyone, & as a passionate researcher it is thrilling to share the fruits of my discoveries in compressed video form.
While my appreciation for Radio, the Pulp era, & comics in particular, has been a lifelong affair; it is only recently, as I’ve noticed the decline in awareness on these topics, that I’ve decided to spent what little free time I have assembling these videos. It truly is a passion project for me, & I hope that comes across. While I can't promise that I won't present the occasional over-the-top rant on something, I can promise everything will come from the heart.
Please subscribe if you too find these amazing purely American stories fascinating; feel free to reach out with any questions, or suggestions for topics.

The Shadow Radio Show: Episode 106 The Plot That Failed
A quick synopsis would be appreciated.
I always like a story that shows Americans and Europeans don't know everything
Thanks for posting this rare old film. It's from the beginning of the shadow series. You must have worked hard to find it. I really love your channel. Hope you keep posting these great old radio shows. I always listen, the sound and quality is impressive. THANKS
I've found two other versions of this episode on UA-cam, one of which was a recreation with modern day actors. Both of them, for some reason, leave out the part of the flashback sequence where Arthur Whittington tries to read his research paper in his raspy voice, followed by the sound of the students laughing at him before he throws down his papers and runs out of the classroom. Thank goodness this version includes the complete sequence. I used to have a multi-cassette compilation called "Too Hot For Radio," which contained radio episodes that were considered "offensive" or controversial, like the segment from "The Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy Show" with Mae West in the infamous "Adam and Eve" skit. Anyway, the set also included the "Shadow" episode heard here, and according to the booklet that came with it, this story, as well as other radio programs and episodes with similar themes, caused outrage among some people, who felt that such stories were too scary and too morbid to be broadcast during hours when they might be heard by children or by those who frighten easily. ("The Shadow" was usually broadcast at 5:P.M. or 5:30 P.M.) There were even demands that shows like these be BANNED from the airwaves altogether! There's one thing about this "Voice of Death" story that doesn't make sense. How was Arthur Whittington able to remove his own vocal cords from himself and replace them with those of his cousin, Frank Harper, who, in turn, received Arthur's scratchy vocal cords? I doubt that Arthur would've been able to perform surgery on himself without risking his own life. His servant wouldn't have been able perform the operation, since he probably had no medical or scientific training, and thus was neither a doctor nor a scientist. It just isn't logical!
Very good episode
Great episode. Thanks for posting wonderful show. So glad I found your site. I'm hooked. Listen every night.
This really is an incredible story. Bravo to the writers and performers.
The Sun is shining…
Loved this classic episode
How years was The Shadow on the air and who played The Shadow over the years?
A wealthy Playboy with a secret identity and he's a vigilante sounds familiar.
Vary enjoyable story
I'm so happy I found this
YAY!! The Shadow!
I definitely agree, having them in order is great.
8:35 Lois Lane, always looking for a story, didn’t listen to Superman.
This is the fourth Superman cartoon.
Indeed it is!
Thanks bruv for loading this. I just found my cd’s of this season. But don’t have. The first disk. Lame I know
What a terrible plan to get a damaged war veteran to do your bidding. Powerful idea.
Although 1938 so plenty of real world ideas
I haven’t commented yet on your channel, I just wanted to say thank you! I enjoy the way you introduce the stories, different than so many other intros on channels that play these. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I used to listen to this at late night on radio station in Cleveland Ohio 1960s;)
I have to admit, i rooted for the panther against the Reverend
Nice to see another mesmerist
If you ever need to tell anyone how important The Shadow is, drop this on them: If there was no Shadow then, there would be no Batman now.
Feels like half the super heroes and their villains wouldn't exist without The Shadow.
@@liubei3058 Well, him and Doc Savage.
One of the great problems of being anonymous, someone stealing your gimmick. Just ask Mr. Wrestling II!
Really nice that these old radio shows have been preserved.
Love Orson Welles and the great radio shows of the 1930s+1940s. Wonderful Beloved History!
I met Walter Gibson, he did a magic show for our cub scout dinner and later met him at his home in Eddyville NY. WGHQ played his radio show into the 70's.
Really great villain performance here
Never been into the shadow before. Great listenjng!
They are unlike anything else! Thanks for Listening!
The weed of crime bears bitter fruit.
Crime Does Not Pay! The Shadow Knows! Thanks for Listening!
I think, out of all of the episodes, this is my favorite one. The suspects got a choice between a mob judgement or a jury of their peers.
It's certainly a good one! Thanks for Listening!
Never listened to this before, thanks!
Hope you enjoyed it! I'll be dropping more episodes from where I left off in the New Year!
THIS. ALL OF THIS.
Damn he's cool.
One of my many favorite episodes.
Remain greatest annimation examples to this day!!!
It is exceptional.
One of my favorite episodes
It is a great one! Thanks for listening!
Paul Gordon is an udiot, the whole narrative doesn't make any sense, none whatsoever, the dumbing down of America continues.
Thanks for listening!
Saw the notification. Gotta come back for this one right before bedtime!
Let me know what you think!
"What if she comes back without her soul?" "...what?" Don't know why that initial reaction made me laugh. ATheta could be a great title for book or similar story. Excellent broadcast for Halloween.
Thanks Odin! It's a favorite for a reason, and short enough that I figured everyone would enjoy it.
Listening while I’m at work. Thanks Aldous!
Hope you enjoyed it!
"Mr Cranston must be very wise" /The Shadow
A luxury cruise is horrifyingly isolated at sea.
It's part of the terror for sure!
Very nice. First heard this ep via a collection of episodes that I rented from my local library. As a visually impaired person, shows using sound design are quite useful, and I'm interested in knowing how older shows sounded via the radio.
There is a certain warmth that comes with the show floating across the air waves that is sadly faintly lost in this format
Nice. Not sure, but might've been the first ep of this show I heard, as some local radio stations would broadcast eps of old radio shows.
That is how I was introduced to them! Working in the barn with my grandfather, listening to replays on am radio
All these shadow radio programs is refreshing in this troubled times!!!
Couldn’t agree more my friend!
