The Strike Double Lift, my way
My take on the strike double. I don't do it perfectly and never have. Still a work in progress after (gasp) 50 years! I've worked hard enough on it that I think I have some tips to offer, ones that I wish I had had when beginning to learn the sleight.

Two tips and a philosophical musing on the one-handed top palm

The one-handed top palm. Two tips on making the move look more natural. First, how I try to put a necessarily awkward grip into a natural context and how I regrip the deck after the palm, with a nod to Derek Dingle. Sadly, I see that Vanishing Inc. as well as other dealers I've checked no longer offer the download of the Glenn Morphew palm I reference in the video. Seek it out, if you can. It's...

Father Cyp Double Lift
Переглядів 1,3 тис.2 роки тому
A quick, one-take video of the double lift Father Cyprian Murray taught me in the early 1980's. I haven't seen anyone do it since (I don't get around much), but when I do it in a routine for others magicians they usually don't give a damn about the routine but want me to teach them this double lift. So now it's on UA-cam so instead of teaching it yet again, I can just give them a link! Enjoy!
A User-Friendly Bottom Deal along with some random thoughts
Переглядів 19 тис.2 роки тому
I do not do an artful bottom deal. I do this one. I use it when its weaknesses are least conspicuous and I do it on the off-beat. I also do a couple of simple things in the handling of the deck itself that add to the.deceptiveness. Here's a link to a quick idea using this bottom deal. This video is unlisted. ua-cam.com/video/EdtIGJTY2nE/v-deo.html
Zarrow Shuffle Variation (Garcia claims it, but who knows?)
Переглядів 6122 роки тому
I've been doing this shuffle for a while and have never seen anyone else do it. It's my understanding of the version taught on pages 109-110 of Garcia's Million Dollar Card Secrets. I think it's unusually deceptive for a Zarrow Shuffle as the illusion of the cards being mixed as the two halves of the deck are pushed together is enhanced. It's not easy, I don't do it perfectly, but I do it often!

      Me too, though my first encounter with this type of lift was Ken Krenzel's Drag Double Lift from Lorayne's The Card Classics of Ken Krenzel, I later saw the Dingle lift in the Kaufman book and frankly, I could do neither version. I think the main difference between Dingle and Krenzel on the one hand and this version on the other is the technique of turning the deck away from the pivoting card which has the double benefit of facilitating the turnover of the pivoting double with the left thumb and getting those damned left fingers out of the way. For years I tried lifting the pivoting cords over the fingers until the ah ha moment when I figured out that it works better to get the deck out of the way the card than to get the card out of the way of the deck. If this video has anything to offer, that's it, as I see it.

    The double lift is so overused these days, I think it should be finessed to disguise it a little. It's not that thumb-counting off two cards isn't still deceptive, just that it shows more artistry to not telegraph it to those who already know it. 🤷‍♂️

    • @profrt
      @profrt 8 днів тому

      When you say "overused," you raise a red flag for me. Sure, a LOT of magic depends on imperceptibly switching cards and there are MANY methods used, depending on the circumstances. The audience should be totally unaware of the techniques involved and the value of the trick as entertainment shouldn't depend on method. Sure, an audience of magicians might roll their eyes with a condescending "oh that old thing" but for the lay audience, the choice of double lift versus some novel sleight is not only a non-issue, it's absolutely non-existent. You do remind me of the first time I did a trick for magicians using Lorayne's Ultra-Move. They couldn't have been less interested in the trick - a good one I thought - but they INSISTED I teach them the then-novel technique. By the way, the point of a striike double lift is to avoid the thumb count as well as getting a break. I like this lift because there's a logical reason, given the display position of the face-up double, to turn the card face down on the deck before dealing it off. For most double lifts, turning the card face down before dealing it is an awkward necessity, not a logical continuation of the handling.

      @@profrt Oh I totally get your perspective, and was not trying to start an argument! All I can say in response is that yes, we shouldn't lose the lay perspective on our work. Moves that make fellow practitioners yawn, are still powerful to our target audience. That said, my go-to tabled force - which involves slowly thumbing off cards with one hand into a messy tabled spread until I'm told "that one!" - is actually bottom dealing into a double lift (!) under cover of the larger movement of holding up the card, then using one hand to thumb it off onto the table, before genuinely losing the indifferent card in the deck. I was at a magic conference in Warwickshire, and totally floored another magician with this simultaneous force and top control. I personally enjoy methods that baffle even other magicians, and that's an artistic choice, not a requirement. Using the Curry turnover switch/change as a force is also a favourite. With the spread packet in the dominant hand as shade for getting the fingers in place, it's invisible.

  • @apostatereacts
    @apostatereacts 10 місяців тому

    Been using this for years as a force. Spread the cards face down and have one touched, fiarly place the selection face down on the table, and continue spreading to a break on the force card ("you could have chosen any of these...". Turn over the spread above the break to show all the cards are different, and at that moment execute the change with the bottom half of the deck. Never fails, because all eyes are on the spread portion. Doing it this way also provides a rationale for not using your empty hand (in your demonstration provided by having to turn over two cards). Also, for some reason no-one ever expects such an audacious move, so you can slowly and deliberately handle everything up to that point to create a strong illusion of free choice. Just don't try it on a glass or polished surface. 😂

    When you buckle the card it's so easy to create a knuckle flash. That's why I don't tend to use that method.

    • @profrt
      @profrt 2 роки тому

      I don't think a knuckle flash is a problem. As I use this deal, there's NO attention on the hand holding the deck at the moment of prep. Besides, if necessary, the flash can usually be hidden. And I'll trade the security of the buckled card over the increased risk of dealing a card flush with the bottom every time! I try not to let the perfect be the enemy of the good, or good enough anyway. I DO worry about the finger flash, but not as much as I used to. At the time of the flash, the hand is in motion and for part of the time the card being dealt covers the flash. And besides, the deck itself is in motion, so - although i don't claim to be able to see magic through a layman's eyes - I'm supposing that the larger motion of the deck moving laterally hides the brief, small motion of the fingers.

    I actually do the same trick as a go to. Except I get them to shuffle the deck with the card in a gambler's cop. Then I get it to the top of the deck. I then do consecutive bottom deals until they say stop. I can then very slowly and fairly take the card from the top and give it to them. Never fails to impress

    • @profrt
      @profrt 2 роки тому

      Why do a LOT of bottom deals when you can do just one? What do you see as the advantage? If you want the spectator to turn over the chosen card, OK. But wouldn't second deals be more efficient and require less movement?

    • @josephstyer
      @josephstyer 2 роки тому

      @@profrt because second deals are very hard for me. And pretty useless since I can bottom deal effectively without a lot of movement. Yes it is! I learned if from Close Up Card Magic in the 1960's and posted it here, not because it's my move, but because Lorayne's description, and Giobbi's as well, does not point out the reaching of the thumb to the far edge of the card switched out and the consequent waiting for the card to be in the thumb crotch before pushing out the switched-in card. I make no claims for even pseudo-originality beyond pointing out those fine points.

      The way Lorayne teaches it seems wrong to me. Look at pictures 99-101 on pages 217-218. His thumb does NOT reach across the card! It is IMPOSSIBLE to get into the position shown in pic 102 as shown. The switched out card should pivot on the same long axis as the switched in card. The thumb reaching all the way across the card makes this a piece of cake. The way Lorayne teaches the move, the switched-in card would appear in a position behind (more towards you) than the switched-out card. BTW, I learned the move from Lorayne as well! He was an early mentor (a couple of my things are in Apocalypse), but he wasn't perfect!
