This was so useful and inspiring! This answered so many questions about some of my favourite kind of sounds. And a nice Operator tutorial on the side as well =D I immediately got a song going!
Amazing! I'm glad I could help. Thanks for checking out the video! Let me know if you upload the song anywhere <3
@@eptiar Wiil do!
Thank you 🙏 great video
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed!
Great tutorial, thanks so much. Learned a load from this, and it's very kind of you to make the project freely downloadable. Cheers!
Glad I could help! Thanks for watching!!
Nice one for sharing the link, I did wonder where the spike in sales came from!! Thank you!!
No way! Well I'm glad I could help, I guess haha. Thanks for watching by the way! Really appreciate your support!
@ found you as someone left a review saying to look you up! It’s a small world….
Mad! That's really lovely though. Again, thanks for checking the channel out! Small world indeed!
Nice one, thank you!!
this was so very good. Thank you. I'm hugely inspired by some new techniques.
I'm glad you found it useful! Thanks for watching 😁
Great video 🙏
Thank you!!
Great stuff! Whats the song on the intro, cant find it on your bandcamp. Keep it up!
Thanks for the interest! Its just an ambient thing I did a while back. I haven't released music properly since 2018 or 2019 so most of my music remains on my hard drive haha. I'll get round to releasing something properly soon haha
Your videos are great. You have a new fan
Thank you very much!! Glad you like them!
decent demo. looks like its tricky to get anything musical out of it at all. would be interesting to see the software made by aphex twin used competently too. I haven't really got anything useful from that in the few times I had little go at using it .
It can be quite difficult in all honesty. It definitely is a learning curve but you can get there! After the video, I found out that you can transfer a sequence from the sequencer into the image synth. So that would be a much easier way of getting more traditional musicality out of it. Ah, is that Sample Brain? I've used it a few times, mainly for textures. I could give a video about it a go though!
@@eptiaryou did a good job. nice insight into what apex twin was doing on w licker ep. yeah Sample brain, a video on that could be fun. Or Hainbach's Fluss app, though I've been able to get much more usable results from Fluss than sample brain . They seem to be in a similar granular realm but very different.
im very familiar with the layers in flower shop
a basic percussion-only version would be fun
Sorry, do you mean a video on percussion in Metasynth? Or a software like metasynth for percussion? Either way, I think it'd be a good idea
@eptiar a scaled down percussion version of metasynth
If Metasynth comes to windows or someone makes something similar I will eat it right up!
I wonder if there's a way to run a virtual Mac machine within Windows? That might work!
7:02 Boss's evil laughter in an NES game
Absolutely 😂
As I see it's a very powerful program in it's class. But it sounds very "computer-ish". The most of results reminds me a big chunk of some data file processed via a vocoder.
Fascinating tool this, thanks for the overview
No worries! Thank you for watching!
@@eptiar Pleasure! Subscribed, interested in seeing stuff like this for sure
Actually, there are a few pieces of software out there that DO have muscle memory and workflows similar to this (drawing in frequencies to shape sound). There's TUGSPEC, a free image-to-spectral-filter VST, for one. Then there's Kaleidoscope, by 2C Audio, which starts from the same idea, but applies it to a more resonator / convolver type of effect. I don't mean this as a slight to the quality of the information or opinions presented in this video, on the contrary: I shared these plugins in hopes they'd inspire your curiosity.
Oh, Image-Line Harmor also has an img-to-sound additive resynthesis mode.
Wow! I had no idea about any of these!! Thanks for letting me know! I should've clarified I meant 'no muscle memory' in comparison to the usual DAW however, I still didn't know there were other softwares like MS! Thanks for letting me know! I'll check them out ASAP
this is gem
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed. Let me know if there's anything else you'd like to see
Best Meta Synth demo i seen in over 15 years
Wow! Thank you! That means a lot! I thought the video was quite messy haha so thank you <3
And no links to the software.....wow...I just corrected my comments because , weak arguments to Google it? Like why are you here? I don't need to Google...this is old , very old news. Current software is lightyears ahead.
Why are you so angry? 😂
@@orlathornton1255 angry? Does every comment have to be 'ow awesome' ?
No, but it doesn't have to be "fuck this old shit" either.
this was a fun and informative watch! I would definitely be ok if there were more MetaSynth based videos in the near future
Thank you so much! I'm glad you'd happily see more! Because I'm very excited about this software. I barley scratched the surface in this video and recently have been told about some really neat tips and tricks!

Great video, and love your voice, just one suggestion:put a desser on your voice or check your microphone! Have a nice day!
Thank you for the kind words!! Also I absolutely agree! In all honesty, I was editing the video with some bad Bluetooth in-ears...only when I released the video and properly listened did I realise how bad it sounded 😅 I'll make sure for next time though!
Getting this asap
I'd highly recommend it! Crazy stuff! And I only just about scratched the surface in this video. The software is amazing!
I JUST watched his video
Wait, who's video? 😅 Benn Jordan's?
Too bad it’s Mac only.
Yeah that is a shame. Is there a way to run a virtual Mac machine on windows maybe?? That might be worth checking out. To be honest, I'm surprised Metasynth isn't Windows only. Apparently ( I saw this in one of the Benn Jordan Videos linked in the description) they had to recode or rescript Metasynth something like 5 times because of apple always changing their code...I didn't really understand it but it sounded like a nightmare!!
@@eptiar it’s a miracle they kept the software running on Mac. It’s been around since the mid 90s. I’ll make do with Virtual ANS.
Sick!
Thanks man!! Glad you enjoyed!
I remember using something like this in the mid 90s coagula or something like thay
Clearly this is a bazillion times more flexible
Yeah someone else mentioned that!! I'll have to check it out!
Please do a Skee Mask tutorial!! Pleaseee
I'll 100% look into that! Haven't listened to them before in all honesty! I'll do some research!
@@eptiar Check out Pool and Compro, both are great albums of his. Both his drum programming and sound design are out of this world.

They were done with some Max4Live devices called Zwobot. Great way to get good visuals quickly!! They can be audio reactive too! Great for live shows!

So glad I found your channel, what a treat Happy new year to you, Epitar keep em coming
Hey, you're here as well, lol! Two minutes after I saw you on that other one. This channel is indeed very good.
No worries! Thanks for watching! Happy New year to you too!
Hey @Vingul! Saw you message on the video earlier. Thanks for your support!
Back in the day, about 20 years ago we used an image synth called Coagula. I don't know how similar it was but you could load images in and make sound or vice versa. You could get lost in it for nights. Having now watched a bit of the video it looks and sounds very samey.
"For nights" -- I like that. More realistic than "for days". "Samey" has negative connotations btw but I guess you just mean similar. Incidentally the top example when doing a google search for "samey definition" is "dance music all sounds rather samey to me", lol. Appropriate.
Hmm, I've never heard of Coagula. Do you know of any videos or files that you know of that I could take a look at? Sounds interesting!
@@eptiar It's still available man. I had a look after commenting. Only thing is, as I say, it was 20 odd years ago and I'm not sure what kind of operating system you would need. It wasn't as expansive as Metasynth seems but It looks very similar. I'm sure it was free too. If you type Coagula Software in to YT there are videos.
@@Vingul Sorry. Similar then. At the time I did most of my writing at night and in to the early morning so nights is actually correct............Wait? I said similar in the first instance.
@@meangene408 "For nights" isn't incorrect at all, but I read it as a spin on the much more common "for days"... but I wasn't correcting you. I just liked the way you phrased it. You did say similar in the first instance but ended the comment with samey. No worries and no reason to say sorry of course, I'm not trying to be mean!
Hey Eptiar - I was probably a bit over-the-top gushy about your Autechre-inspired video but I feel this one was just as enlightening, even if you yourself maybe indicated otherwise. I've always known that Ryoji Ikeda/Alva Noto-style glitch rhythm stuff was derived, ultimately, from sine waves and noise, but prior to seeing your videos, focusing especially on how to put Operator at the centre of the Live Set, I really had no clue how to actually go about doing that. Granted, since I'm sort of an ambient guy and would tend to work with tempos less than half your speed (🙂), being exposed to strategies for building up those sorts of sounds and sequencing them with useful MIDI and audio effects has really leapfrogged my learning in those areas. Thanks again and keep 'em coming. I sense you've been sort of fishing for ideas/suggestions from viewers, so here's one: How about a tutorial on how you might develop an entire track from an initial glitch rhythm pattern focusing on the ways the patterns can evolve and progress over time, maybe with layering ideas and stuff (say, taking a cue from "data.matrix"). I mean, I could probably figure things like that out on my own, but I find the best way I learn is first copying somebody else's stuff down to the last detail, then slowly breaking all the rules I learned to make it more my own. Anyways, enough rambling, thanks again as always. Cheers, Frank P.
No please don't worry! Honestly, I'm just glad you enjoy the videos! To your comment about working with slower tempos, I've only just gotten past the ambient BPM within the last year or so...Only because I was nervous to make drums haha. I believe in my Breakcore Drums video, I mentioned that I didn't even know what Drum Breaks were and tried to make them using Kontakt Drummer Libraries! I think it's why a lot of my focus is on rhythm. That sounds like a great idea! I think I've already got a plan for that actually... In other news, there's a new, completely out of my comfort zone video about Metasynth! If that interests you, let me know what you think about it when it comes out!!!
@@eptiar I'll be sure to check that out and comment! I know absolutely sweet f--- all about Metasynth at the moment, but maybe your expose of it will introduce me to something new! 🙂
Further question: Would you happen to be an Octatrack user by chance?
I could watch that little guy dance for HOURS.
He's just a little fella

Thank you very much! Happy New year to you too!
😮 marvelous techniques
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it! Let me know what you might want to see next!
Metasynth sounds cool because the only real competitor to it is the fruity harmor, and SeamlessR has been quiet for a while now. Happy holidays!
I have to be honest, I've never tried FL so I don't know about that synth. I am currently recording a video on Metasynth so it'll be out soon!
@@eptiar FL certainly has its midi roll perks to channel your inner Flashbulb but I can’t get past certain clunky parts of it like the patterns/channels. FL also hopped on the MPE train before everyone else(at least for internal Image-Line instruments) and could even let you do multiple midi channels of notes per pattern to make Kontakt easier. The automation lanes and instruments being in the same list will drive you nuts, however. But yeah Harmor does have image processing and can do spectral morphing/shifting stuff that was 2010s DnB/Dubstep a la Split the Atom. Check out the “how to bass” series by SeamlessR.
29:12 oh we getting farty
You're really g.a.s.s.i.n.g me up 😎
I dont have Metasynth yet, but would love to vids on that program. And VCV Rack :D love that program
I think Metasynth will be my next video! It's extremely exciting! Honestly mind blowing!!
Nice video mate! I’ve been watching your work from the first video and I must say I see a lot of progress lately. The quality of the content and the narration seems a bit upgraded. I’m interested how could we convert generative techniques to a full arrangement. Keep up the good work! Cheers!
Wow! Thanks for watching since then! And thank you for your words!! I'm glad you've noticed an improvement haha. Also, I'd love to do that. Someone else mentioned generative ambient music so I could mix that idea and your idea?
@@eptiar Yeah I think generative “hacks” is a good way to create great patterns and interesting sounds. I’d like to see sound design tips but the point is to incorporate these ideas in our tracks and not just messing around. In the end of the day in my opinion finishing a track is what matters and not just having a HD full of presets and loops.
Loving the vids man!
Thank you!!
Pretty. Very musical.
Thank you very much!
Sounds very nice. I've been getting into making some generative ambient music, but I haven't quite nailed getting to the sweet spot between variation and also having phrases more or less repeat. It can easily get a bit.. scattered. Imma try some long delay times á la Fripp & Eno. Anyway, I'll watch past the intro now ^^
Thank you! In all fairness it''s quite difficult (That sweet spot you're talking about). I'll happily do a generative ambient video soon if that would help!
@@eptiar That would be cool! It's very rare that a channel has both useful tips/techniques and music as good as yours.
Ah thanks man. That means a lot! On that note, I'm hoping to release some new music soon so fingers crossed haha. But yeah, I'll get on to the ambient stuff!
@@eptiar Excellent. Let us know about the music as well.
