It was narrated that Sa‘d ibn Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “The supplication of Dhu’n-Nun when he called upon Allah when he was in the belly of the fish, is: ‘La ilaha illa anta subhanaka inni kuntu min al-zalimin (There is no god worthy of worship except You. Glory be to You; I have indeed done wrong).’ No Muslim calls upon Allah with these words for any need but Allah will answer his prayer.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhi (3505) and Imam Ahmad in al-Musnad (3/65); classed as hasan by the commentators on al-Musnad; classed as sahih by Shaykh al-Albani in Sahih al-Targhib wa’l-Tarhib (2/282).
{thus do We deliver the believers}. This is a promise and glad tidings to every believer who falls into hardship and distress, that Allah will save him from it, and will grant him relief and alleviate his distress, because of his faith, as He did in the case of Yunus (as)."(Tafsir al-Sa‘di p. 529).
The Prophet (Peace & Blessings of Allah be upon Him) said to his companions: "Shall I not tell you some words which, if distress or grief befalls any of you and he offers this prayer (supplication), it will bring him joy? It is the du`a of Dhoo’l-Noon (i.e. Yunus or Jonah): ‘There is no god but You, Glory to You; verily I was one of the wrongdoers.’" (Saheeh al-Jaami‘, no. 2605).
It was narrated that ‘Uthman ibn ‘Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) say: “Whoever says, ‘Bismillah illadhi la yadurru ma ‘a ismihi shay’un fi’l-ardi wa la fi’s-samai wa huwa as-Sami‘ ul-‘Alim (In the name of Allah with Whose name nothing can harm on earth or in heaven, and He is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing),’ three times, will not be stricken with a sudden affliction until morning comes, and whoever says it three times when morning comes will not be stricken with a sudden affliction until evening comes.” Narrated by Abu Dawud (5088).
It was narrated by at-Tirmidhi (3388) as follows: “There is no one who says in the morning of every day and the evening of every night, ‘Bismillah illadhi la yadurru ma ‘a ismihi shay’un fi’l-ardi wa la fi’s-samai wa huwa as-Sami‘ ul-‘Alim (In the name of Allah with Whose name nothing can harm on earth or in heaven, and He is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing),’ three times, but nothing will harm him.” At-Tirmidhi said: It is hasan sahih gharib. It was classed as sahih by Ibn al-Qayyim in Zad al-Ma‘ad (2/338). Also classed as sahih by al-Albani in Sahih Abi Dawud.
Abu Dawud (5081) narrated that Abu’d-Darda’ (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Whoever says, morning and evening, ‘Hasbi Allah, la ilaha ill-Allah, ‘alayhi tawwakaltu wa Huwa Rabb ul-‘Arsh il-‘azim (Allah is sufficient for me, there is no god but He, in Him have I put my trust and He is the Lord of the Mighty Throne)’, seven times, Allah will suffice him against all that concerns him.
It was narrated from ‘Uthman ibn Abi’l-‘As that he complained to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about a pain in his body that he had suffered from the time he became Muslim. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to him: “Put your hand on the part of the body that hurts and say Bismillah (in the name of Allah) three times. And say seven times: A’udhu Billahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajidu wa uhadhir (I seek refuge in Allah and His power from the evil of what I feel and worry about).” (Narrated by Muslim, 2202)
