    Don't apologize man. Your perfectly fine. What matters is you had the courage to get in front of the camera and share your experience with us about your RX8 and your ownership. It's valuable information that people like myself are seeking out cause we're either curious or want to own one. Which in my case I do want to own one someday. Cause as meticulous as I am with the maintenance on my Mazda 3 I'm pretty sure I can handle maintenance on one of these to. Cause the only thing that truly makes it different is the fact that it utilizes a Rotery engine as opposed to a regular piston engine. Otherwise everything else around the engine is still stuff that's used on piston engines. It still sorta functions like a piston engine in terms of the combustion process. It just has a different way of going about it but still the same result. But good God I really want one. I love they're unique shape, their unique sound. I have never driven one unfortunately but hopefully in the future I can have the opportunity to drive one and own one.

    So when I had my first RX8 years ago, I never Premixed and only did frequent oil changes with conventional oils. This time after years of researching and looking into parts and modifications and what not, I'm going to go with putting on the Sohn Adaptor to change where there Oil Metering pump pulls oil from. I haven't found anyone talking about oil from the Separated system getting into the Oil Sump. Because adding a Sohn adaptor then separates them completely. You do have Oil from the pan being sent through the Eccentric shaft for bearings and inside the rotors, but in order for the Oil from the Sohn system through the injectors to get into the regular engine oil, you'd have to have a bad seal. The oil metering system doesn't have an oil return line as far as I'm aware of, because the Oil Metering system only squirted oil at certain instances in the rev range, so it isn't a constant pressure that would warrant a return line. So I'd see the benefit of having Clean, Colder oil from the Sohn Adaptor reservoir being used rather than Hot and dirty oil from the oil pan being put into the rotor housing. I'd also go as far to say, this is the application that would work best for the Idemitsu Rotary Oil, because it's specifically formulated, clear and a bit more viscos. The great thing about separating the oil metering with a Sohn Adaptor, is that you can, worry free, use whatever synthetic you'd like in the engine oil. Though, like you said, some synthetics are designed to burn cleaner. I've had lengthy conversations with the Tech Team over at Royal Purple about using their oil in a Rotary application, and they've assured me that using it in a stock application like the RX8 is completely fine. They've had thorough studying via Racing applications using their products and had great success. So I believe you when you said, It burnt clean. :) Anyways, we're constantly learning about how to make these cars better all the time. And the best we can do is research and see what others have done and make our own best judgments. I appreciate your perspective!! Keep up the great work in your hobby!!

      Thank you. I’m trying to give the future RX8 owners a place on UA-cam. Often times folks hate on this car just because they heard some kid with no mechanical experience who heard from another kid say the car is unreliable and trash. When there’s plenty of RX8 owners who’ve had their car for years with no issues. People fear what they don’t understand. After 16 years of owning this car I’m also experimenting. I never premix for all those years. It’s just now that I’m trying to keep the relationship fresh that haha that experimenting with premixing etc. Also check out Penzoil ultra platinum for oil. I used to run Royal purple till UA-cam channel Project Farm did an oil test and the results were interesting. Royal purple is good oil but check out his video you might find it helpful Good luck with the car and any new information please share.

    I really appreciate your video here. My two cents, is that I was considering having a small gas can in the trunk to shake up pre-mix in at the pump. So that a thorough mixture went into the gas tank and not just pour and hope the gas from the pump mixes it well enough in the tank. And you're showing what happens when this settles in the gas tank. We need a good enough Gas/Premix Ratio being sucked up by the gas pump sock/inlet. If we're sucking up too much Premix and then just gas the rest of the time, then we aren't getting that benefit of sipping Pre-mix as we use gas, like people think they're getting. Which 2stroke oil stays suspended in gas? That's the question!

    • @pv4083
      @pv4083 9 місяців тому

      Yea that’s why even tho Idemitsu makes a “pre mix” I don’t use it. I know I said I would use it in the video but after further testing I realize I don’t drive the car enough to keep the mixture from settling. I switched to the Amsoil you see in the video and the “settling problem” went away. I think you will be fine with the Amsoil two stroke oil you see in the video I think the Idemitsu works but only if you use up that gas tank that same session. Like at a track day but for everyday use it will settle

    • @trackstarflash

      @@pv4083 Thank you for the quick reply, and that's a good shout too. I appreciate a good follow up! Ultimately those of us that use our cars for spirited driving and they stay parked other days, we need that product that'll stay suspended and give us that protection whenever we go driving. Would you be willing to try other types of two stroke oils to see if they stay suspended like the Amsoil?

    • @pv4083
      @pv4083 9 місяців тому

      @trackstarflash sure.. but I think most two stroke oils suspend since they are designed to mix and ignite. I don’t think the Idemitsu is meant to ignite since theoretically the point of the two stroke oil in the rotor housing is to help with lubrication of the apex seals. Which is why Mazda added additional oil injectors on top of the router housing for the series II I picked the Amsoil since it’s meant for high rpm usage in racing snowmobiles situations and has anti Scuff properties which helps with lubrication.

    • @trackstarflash
      @trackstarflash 9 місяців тому

      @@pv4083 I think you're onto it though about the Idemitsu and how that's supposed to hang low and be picked up in order to be utilized per session. and your reasoning with using the two stroke does also make sense. It's the same reasoning why I'm going to test using Pennzoil Marine Premium Plus in my RX8. It's designed to work in harsh conditions, under continual load and has cleaning properties too. I haven't seen anyone else using it in my searches.

    This is why you pour the oil in first then pump gas. You really want it to mix well. It looked to me like the Amsoil actually mixed better. That layer on the bottom with the idemitsu is NOT what you want, too much oil has the effect of leaning out your fuel mixture. If you’re going to use it make sure you pump fuel after to help mix it better. I always left my factory OMP on mine and used a cat safe 2 stroke oil. Never had an issue. Honestly I’d stick with the Amsoil given it’s cheaper and frankly probably as good or better oil.

    • @pv4083
      @pv4083 9 місяців тому

      I hear you and the more I think about it the more I lean towards the Amsoil. I know I said I would used the Idemitsu but only if I was going to go through that particular gas tank right after premixing. For example like a track day since it settles so much at the bottom. If I were premixing on a daily basis I would definitely go with the Amsoil. Once I go through the Idemitsu I’m only going to use Amsoil. Full disclosure I only premix on track days.

    Back in the days, Mazda gave a race engine to Idemitsu and asked the company to make engine oil and Premix oil for that very type of engine! You can't go wrong with Idemitsu. I drive an Rx8. I use Idemitsu Premix for the Sohn kit (injection into the combustion chambers), I use idemitsu engine oil for the engine/sump and I use Idemitsu gear oil for the gearbox and diff. Premix wise, I either use Idemitsu Premix or Pettit Racing Protek-R. My ECU has been reflashed so that my OMP has increased oil dispense rates and I Premix. Both the fuel pump and the catalytic converter are original, 17 years and 63,000 miles. No issues whatsoever.

    I agree with a lot said here but one thing you might want a better understanding is how much vacuum and suction an engine has.. ram intakes will absolutely not help at all as the amount of force needed to pressurize air in order for it to overcome the natural vacuum pressure an engine creates is exponentially greater than any amount of air that could be forced into a car just from driving. The best two things an intake can do is get the coldest air possible with as little restriction as possible. They certainly do have the vacuum pressure to suck air through even small pipes.

    Basically change your oil regularly and don't go lower than 10w (this was said by many rotary shops due to bearing failures) just change it regularly and don't let your oil degrade with time or heat cycles, premix if you want, but understand that premixing = spirited driving / race track and 93 gas or 98 in Europe.

    A thinner oil flows easier and requires less power from the engine to flow it. Despite the fact that the rotary does not have a crankshaft exposed to the oil pan, it still does have an oil pump and this pump still does require a degree of power to turn. There is also oil flowing into the rotors through the eccentric shaft. A thinner oil will flow through the rotors much easier and faster. The oil is the only way the rotors themselves are cooled. Unlike other engines, oil does provide cooling to the rotary. Almost as much as the coolant. The other thing to think about on the rotary is how well a thinner oil can flow through the very small nozzles of the oil metering system. 5k+ miles, use a good synthetic such as Amsoil or Royal Purple and be done with it. Also a good idea to run premium gas when you premix as it lowers the octane of the gas as well. I do 4-6oz per tank 2 stroke lucas semi sythetic sold at Oreilly or Autozone near me.

    I think RAD Potential in his premix video mentions how even the Idemitsu stuff tends to settle out when left sitting in the gas tank. Any insight on that front? Did you ever have a situation where you left the 8 sitting not on empty with premix and if so what were the results? Thanks much for all you're doing this channel is becoming an RX-8 starter guide/reference encyclopedia and I hope everyone stays orderly and respectful in the comments.

      Thank you brother. I’m glad you are finding them useful. I create these videos out of unselfish reasons. I don’t want a channel or subscribers. just want to help fellow RX8 owners. Thanks for the appreciation. I also hope the comments stay respectful. Regarding your question. Yes similar to RAD potential I had the same experience. Even when you don’t leave it on E the oil will settle at the bottom. And since my car sits for weeks at a time I decided to not to premix (unless I know I will be at the track). I actually recorded a video showing how the Idemitsu and Amsoil two stroke oil settles and “mixes” once in the gas tank. I will uploaded in the next couple of days. Is a bit rough but you’ll get the idea. Also keep in mind that premixing will eventually hurt your fuel pump so you’ll have to take that into consideration.

    Thanks for your feedback, what do you recommend after a rebuild? use a 5w20 anyway ?

    • @pv4083
      @pv4083 11 місяців тому

      Assuming the engine was rebuild to OEM specs I would use 5w30 in the beginning to compensate for the wear in the pressure lubricated parts. Once the engine break in is done and you feel comfortable I would do 5w20 if you are driving accordingly… to the parameters discussed in the video. But Make sure you understand the temperatures and driving styles the engine will see and plan accordingly… As a reference EIGHTLIEN RX8 who holds the current time attack record at Tsukuba at 59..secs gets his engines rebuild by RE Amemiya and he runs 0w30 synthetic.

      Thank you. I used a detailed Steamer machine. You can get a relatively cheap one on Amazon. For real greasy spots I used a degreaser but mostly the steamer.

    That damper opens at 5.5k, and the length is tuned. The resonator is for engine drone, no effect on power.

    I don’t have an RX8, but from someone who has been mixing 2-stroke fuel for my whole life… You can’t take any 2-stroke oil dump it into a tank of gasoline and hope it will mix. Ideally you want to mix a batch in a Jerry can by sealing the lid tight and agitating WELL. That allows top ups without messing up the ratio. To mix in tank at a gas station, I’d recommend mixing the total required oil in a 1 gallon Jerry can, mix well, dump in tank, then top up with the correct amount of fuel.

      Good point. I pour 2 stroke into the tank first then fuel over top, 20L of fuel will slosh enough to mix 100/200 mil of premix I think

    Yes,yes,yes, finally someone with sume good advice, I've said it for years the more you expect, the less reliable it gets. These cars are built for carrying speed in to corners, there Not the fastest from A - B ,or from a standard start, but thay have endurance. Let the force flow through your body

    I think it is a very misunderstood car from this video. It's obvious that it can be more reliable than any piston engine with the proper care. I think the problem came up because it was the first mass market RX sports car. Really they should always have been aimed at the supercar market.

    I feel heard ;) 14 years with a 2008 40th anniversary, driven summers and winters up North in Montréal, Canada, and have the same feeling about the car. And this after having leased a 2005 model prior to that. No pre-mix, only used non-synthetic oil, and drive it as it should be driven at every chance I get. Only worry is rust as I neglected it in the later years, but it started faintly in the rear wheel wells after 12 years. Otherwise, this has been my most reliable car (but DO read the manual and stick to the maintenance calendar!). I much enjoyed your video.

      @pv4083 Рік тому

      That’s great to hear! I firmly believe that the RX8 is misunderstood and with the future being all electric cars these cars will be much more appreciated. Question, are you still using non synthetic and what oil weight? I went back to 5w20 from 5w30 just to see the difference and the engine revs a bit quicker and smoother. It still synthetic. Im curious what your thoughts are…I’m glad you enjoyed the video brother

    • @francoisluneau
      @francoisluneau Рік тому

      @@pv4083 I've always only used non-synthetic 5W20 oil, but wasn't very picky about the brand. I never raced it at a track though, where I might have looked at different options to keep the engine cool as I know it can run hot when pushed. My reason for using non-synthetic, other than being what was recommended in the manual, was the explantation I had read about its particular quality when injected (and burned) in the combustion chamber vs synthetic oil. Mazda stated it was a better solution in the long run for the engine.

    • @pv4083
      @pv4083 Рік тому

      @francoisluneau yea that’s what I used all these years. I just only started using synthetic because how often I was tracking the car but as the car returns to a more weekend fun car I’m thinking of going back to non synthetic 5w20…thanks for the info
