Is This 5’6 Asym Twin the best board I have ever Surfed in a Wave Pool? Urbansurf Advanced Turns
I recently picked up the Asymmetrical Fish from a shaper on the Gold coast, I have always loved the idea of a twin quad fish and have really enjoyed feeling the new feelings.
Going to make a full review and break down the asymmetrical theory, anyone got suggestions or questions they would like to see answered in the video coming up?
Session at urban was super fun, felt a bit like I played it safe looking back at the footage but its so expensive you really don’t want to waist waves haha. First advanced turns session in a while, definitely more carves and floaters for me than progressive turns, witch felt really good for practicing snaps. Idk I don’t surf it enough to really give a good break down but it’s definitely bigger, hollower and faster than progressive turns, was good fun!

Is This The Longest Wave In Australia?

On our last trip to Noosa we went on an adventure to a crazy spot called double island point, swell was small but it was beutiful and the rides were long. Long boards on a crazy long sand bottom right hand point break in warm crystal clear waters are a recipe for a fun day. 🤔 What's your favorite surf spot? How does the Firewire Seaside go on a beachy you ask? Well up until this week I had the same question, I have only been surfing it at reef breaks and I think the answer is really well. The board has a shit load of speed and turns on a dime if you get ure foot back on the tail pad so it's pretty easy to play around in the pocket on an unpredictable beach break, it catches waves weirdly well and ...

I have been surfing at URBANSURF Melbourne for a while now and have found the wave quite weak in comparison to real ocean waves witch has lead me to try flater rocker boards and wider shorter shapes. The Seaside by Firewire is not only flat and wide but it is also a Quad fin giving it shitloads of drive and hold, goes unreal in the pool, the short shape fits in well with the small face imo and ...

Does the Firewire Sunday Work In Small Waves? Crescent Head NSW

For the past 6 months or so I have been surfing the Sunday alot and It definately is better in small waves than other midlengths I have surfed, It isnt however a log or a glider and although it has alot of volume making it easy to catch waves it also has a decent amount of rocker allowing it to fit into the pocket of good waves but also stopping it from gliding like a log would in small waves. ...

where is it?
Sick🤙
Looks sick mate, interested to see what you come up with for a custom!
Super keen, gonna be a fun project!
This content is priceless for me, as someone who is starting to use URBNSURF 2/3 times a week, but still working his way up from progressive turns to intermediate, and getting his fitness up, who also likes firewire boards and album, this channel is just gold. I dont like watching YT channels where the surfer is just too advanced because it becomes irrelevant to me. So well done, always enjoy when you post.
This comment is priceless for me haha thanks so much man I appreciate the comment! What is your favourite board at the moment?
@ right now I’m running a 6’8 seaside and beyond. But I’ve got a 6’3 dhd black diamond that might have its first go this weekend. Mate I’m trying to get my level to around where you are so I can start using smaller boards and doing more turns. Would love a twinsman, but I’ve seen a few at the pool and I’m not at that fitness/skill level just yet.
Sometimes it’s nice to get off the shortboard and cruise 🤙🏾
If the waves aren’t pushing chest high and they’re kinda fat Im very happy to get off the shortboard haha
Nice video, do you like the Rincon?
Loved it, will probably do a review in the near future
Where I learned to surf
Where
Double island point Queensland
Hi, great review, what’s your height and weight?
175cm 75kg
@ thx, am 170 and 65 kg. There’s a used one near me that’s 7’2. Do you think it’s meant to be used on the shorter side or the longer board could also work?
Also someone suggested slightly bigger fins than the albums recommendation. Any take on that?
I think a larger one would definitely still work, would suit smaller waves probably
I really like the small asher pacey album uprights
How long have you been surfing to ride at this level?
On and off for many years and then basically every week for 18months now, if you go way back to the beginning of 2023 on my UA-cam u can find videos of me surfing quite bad relative to now haha
@@AddisonRowland I like your POV videos. I am started surfing last year in my county Sri Lnaka. I also like to do POV videos. Still trying.😁
Love this reef break but I don't have the confidence to take off from deeper/steeper on the inside and then I end up missing out on all the waves. Any tips?
Unfortunately in my opinion with Flynns if you aren’t taking off on the peak or a boil you most of the time end up taking off on a closing section which is really difficult. Id say go when its small, stand on the shallow part of the reef so you know where it is when the set comes and paddle into it watching the wave and if u miss it see where it broke and be there for the next one. Check out my latest reel Its me surfing a tiny wave there and its all about positioning. Also can you edit ure comment to get rid of the name f****s?
How do you do a quick pivoting top turn like that? I am an intermediate surfer and have the bottom turn dialed, but struggle with the release off the top. Awesome vid too. Thx for the help
Sounds like you referring to the snaps off the lip? Honestly i kinda only just started figuring those out on my forehand I think about driving up into a breaking section and unweighting leaning back down the wave a bit and trying to twist kicking the back leg upwards. Its a weird movement to describe haha
sick board try to tuck into the barrels more
I think I need to start surfing the more advanced settings haha
Thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it!
I loved it
As much as I appreciate your enthusiasm, the GoPro first person video thing is over. Even if your Mason Ho.
I love these videos though
Haha, I guess they might be over done but I still enjoy making them so 🤷♂️
Whats your height and weight?

Hey Mate .. what's your take on Firewires Helium construction vs. your conventional PU boards. Any pros and cons after all?
Hey, i like it quite a bit, pros: Light, no deck compressions, lively feel due to lightness and flex Cons: can get water logged quicker if dinged so definitely get it repaired as soon as possible if u damage it, and it yellows in the sun. It’s really cool to feel something different and i think it definitely suits small waves as it feels like u can pack a bunch of volume but doesn’t feel heavy
So basically, you will still grab a PU board if the swell ramps up and you don't care about the fragile nature of this tried-and-tested technology. Have you tried a Firewire shape with more rail length in some more serious conditions?
Theres an idea that helium boards don’t do well in windy/choppy conditions, I guess If go for a PU if it was choppy. I have a 7’0 Sunday that I have ridden in 3-4+ surf but I guess it depends on what you consider serious? I haven’t really been out in seriously serious conditions yet id say 🤣
@AddisonRowland Well, I heard that saying but can't confirm whether it's true or just talk. It might be an odd question, but is your 4-foot wave measurement the wave's face or from the back? I do take out a simple Torq Midlength in more challenging conditions because I don't have to worry about the board getting hit by someone else in the lineup, and I feel they just seem to come alive when the waves have some power. They are perhaps the mother of all epoxy boards, stiff and maybe somewhat heavy. No complaints. I would grab it, actually, anytime. The moment I feel a little bit skippy on more powerful waves is when I'm out on a to smal to much of a groovler board. Think shape might be more important than the actual build 🤷♂️
I measure from the back, i think its kind of silly but it what I’m used to so I’m sticking with it for now, so 3-4+ is probably 6-8ft face. And yeah I agree the shape is definitely a bigger factor than the construction
Thanks for the review. Get a mini simmons 🤘
Definitely keen to try one at some point!
Thanks for the review!
Have you tried a Js flying pony? I prefer it over the seaside for me.
I have not, will hopefully get to it one day! Thanks for your comment!
How do you like it compared to the Plasmic?
I prefer the seaside, the plasmic I had was 40L very wide and had a diamond tail, very skatey hard to tip over on rail, I think if I sized the plasmic down and had it with a swallow I might have kept it. But I didn’t like how it felt. I also think if you want to ride a fish and ure not already an advanced surfer a quad fish is going to be more user friendly and give you more control and confidence to push turns than a twin. Thats an broad opinion that leaves out alot of nuance, but in general i think thats true.
I'm pretty similar standard to OP. Thought i'd add a few thoughts for anyone considering the board. Been on my mates a few times in Morocco this last week. 5'9 with Twin Keels. I'm 5'9 and approx155lbs (11 1/2 st). It went great in the punchy 3ft beach breaks. So quick, so stable on my backside and easy to get around sections. I wasn't really feeling it on the head high/OH Point breaks though. Too Skatey, too flat, and that construction really sits you on top of the water, which sucks if you hit a step or wind chop. I mainly surfed my 6'8 Seaside and Beyond (as a quad), which went far better on 5ft+ days at Anchors and Boilers. If I was getting one, it would definitely be for punchy but not barrelling beach breaks (e.g. Anza) or small days on mellower reefs. Which makes sense given the reef it was designed to surf.
You don’t seem too psyched about this board
Im not psyched on the outside but don’t worry ive been psyching like crazy on the inside after some of my recent sessions on this board 🤣
Thanks for the review, Addison. Lots of Seasides here in Denmark. Good board for smaller waves. Btw, waves in the video look fun, where are you surfing?
Local spots around Melbourne Australia, awesome to hear, didn’t really know Denmark had a surf scene! Thanks for the comment
Whats your size and weight?
78kg 175cm
@ And you. Are on a 5 8 seaside ? Its your normal choice?
Yeah for me 5’7 or 5’8 is kind of perfect for what waves I want to surf it in
I’m definitely a fan of the seaside and it’s easy to ride esp for the older groms. Yeah I don’t take mine out on steep waves because the nose is so fat and catches. A good replacement for steep waves with the seaside feel is the slater Cymatic…Nice review 🤙🏾
Yeah definitely better options out there is its a solid hollow wave but fuck me its so good at making the weaker stuff feel fun!
I have the 6-1, and I'm 6-2. It grovels fantastic in the mushy SoCal beach break waves where I live.
I can imagine those bigger sizes would grovel insane
Great review. I agree that I was a bit oversold when it comes to the SS ability to grovel in small weak waves. Those of us on the Atlantic coast would do well to take “small wave” board advice from California shapers with a pinch of salt. IMO the only true Uber groveler is a mini Simmons. I’ve got a solid surf Bento Box, it’s 5’4” at 37l and feels like a magic carpet in mush burgers. Cheers!
Ill have to try one one day haha, I feel like every surfboard review people save it goes 1-6ft but the guy saying it is usually a pro, perhaps if ure as good as rob the seaside does grovel fantastic but Im not 🤣
Lets talk about why is it soooo expensive. I've been trying to get one but even used here in Victoria are over 800AUD
@@gian.cirone they are mega expensive, one of my mates has had like 4 warranty replacements or something because the lamination goes pink after time. They are a sick board though. Could get a new board for that locally made
@@mattobrien1085 I wanted to replicate the shape on a custom made but never head someone doing it.
Expensive compared to what? They are 1200 new? Whats a reasonable price for a new board? Got mine second hand for 600, have seen one recently for 650, I think considering the crazy construction that doesn’t have deck compressions and is light af it makes sense they are a bit pricier than ure stock standard PU shortboard but I don’t feel like they are unreasonably priced compared to other options in the market.
The fact is was Shaped by Rob is also kind of insane, how many people have hung around with Kelly in the competition, shape and sell boards anyone in the world can pick up and try?
@@AddisonRowland 1200 will get you a custom from a local crew like oke or trigger. Rob didn't personally shape every seaside, he designed the first one and they all get machine shaped and vacuum form laminated in China/thailand. I personally think new boards sub 7'0 should cap out at 1000 unless they have crazy custom sprays or lam tints or full hand shapes but mass produced boards like FireWire should be cheaper. About $250-350 of materials go into a sub 7'0 board for me to make and I'm not buying in massive bulk quantities I buy locally made foam blanks from Rosebud and resin that's made in dandenong. Not hating on the seaside at all one of my best mates surfs one and loves it and its definitely cool being able to surf the same board as your favorite pro! Nothing wrong with compressions on a surfboard, pu is vastly superior to eps in my opinion because it doesn't get waterlogged and is much nicer to shape and glass and way easier ding repairs
Thank you so much for the video it was super informative! May I ask where the surfing segments are filmed? In which country, in which city? beaches?
I am based in Melbourne Australia and most of my surfing is in Victoria, mostly the Mornington Peninsula and Phillip Island, we are very lucky and have many beautiful spots around
I'm local to you and have a crazy little 5'9 I picked up in sunny coast the home of mushy waves. It's 5'9x22 7/8 x 3 from memory and 39l. Closest I've found to replacing a longboard in mushy waves. Welcome to try it out if you want
How much do you weigh? What were you surfing before u got the seaside? Must be better than me at surfing small waves haha
I'm not talking about the seaside it's another board from a small shaper in Queensland SEA studios . I usually shape my own boards but this thing rips small waves. I'm 180cm and 100kg. My usual go to boards are a 6'3 fish or a 7'6 twin that I shaped
100%

@@AddisonRowland what day
hey mate long time no speak, ive spent time away from the pool due to some random stuff happening but back trying to get fit again to join you guys at PT/Intermediate. I've also got a 6'8 seaside and beyond and fingers crossed i can get the paddle fitness up by nov/dec. Gonna be at cruiser tomorrow 7pm to try get the paddle fitness up. Great vid on the seaside, firewire boards always perform well at the pool!
Ay nice! Be great to see you again I might try organise another session in a couple of weeks!
@@AddisonRowland cool man keep up the content
Hey mate, was super stoked to meet you in person that day at Urbnsurf, forgot to get your autograph haha! I was on the 6'8 Seaside and Beyond and I also have a 5'7 Seaside which I haven't tried yet in PT. Will bring it out once my paddling endurance improves. Keep up the good work, these videos are great.
Thanks haha, hopefully see you again next time! Paddle fitness in the pool is intense, going to head back in a couple weeks I think
Shot out to the show 🤙
Great title
It is worth it? I guess it is if its clean and head high?
Awesome review, thank you! I too am an intermediate surfer, maybe "upper intermediate" , but I'm not so good at the late, huck-in-under-the-lip take-off on hollow waves. I am looking for a board to help me get into hollow waves early and get pitted. I'm sold on the Townsend, just not sure if I should go 6'6" or 6'8"? I'm 5'10" 155 pounds, and I only surf eave faces up to about 8-10 feet and even that is not common. Its more for the 6-8 foot face days at my local hollow beachie where I need that extra paddle power. Im thinking 6'6" because I still want to do turns and be able to duck dive, but I'm also curious about a 6'8.
Id say if your typical surf is over head hollow beachies go the 6’6, if ure looking for a step up for good hollow waves tho you might want a little more rocker than the Townsend has, hard to say without knowing your board history and what you like but either way its a great board!
This review is spot on. I love my Townsend
First 2 sessions on the sunday I've loved. I've only surfed in in shit conditions tho. I'm getting a one board quiver vibes from it so far. If it can pass the grovel test and perform in big waves i might start selling off some of my boards.
Yeah definitely could be a one board quiver for sure! In my opinion haha
Cheers, Addison. What does it weigh?
Will have to weigh it, feels very light though
@@AddisonRowland - no worries, buddy. I'll see if I can find one in the Surf Shops of El Palmar this week. Thanks again for your vids.
