I had to search online for something to help make sense of this. I got a bit of insight into it from the critical critics online. They don't really know either. Too much missing in the scripting to pull some of the visuals and characters together. Here is what I think: The first generation did unspeakable things to native girls they stole. One native woman put a curse on the family (via the figurine) and the succeeding generations were haunted. His father was driven crazy. I don't know why Ryan was given away (maybe to save him from the curse) or what happened to his mother. There's not enough there. The cousin - maybe the cursed figurine ended up in his possession when Ryan's father died. The cousin came to put it back on the original property and Ryan caught him. But I couldn't see anything in that hole his "cuz" was digging. Maybe he's not a cousin at all, but a descendant of the old native woman. Ryan realizes what has gone on for generations and tries to exercise the ghosts who visit him, hoping he can break the curse and set their spirits free. The bodies and blood on him in the end weren't real. That was all his imagination trying to exorcise, or free? them. He tosses the figurine and leaves the property to be sold. But the figurine holds the evil and ends up back in his possession. The curse is tied to the family, not the land. I don't know. I maybe stretching it a bit. The one thing I can't seem to figure at all is the grocery guy. They put too much significance on him for the character to just be "filler". I can't figure why he would keep that figurine in the end. Either he retrieved it, or it found it's way. It may be that it's too late for him and he's already carrying the curse, no matter how he had tried to break it. ???
