Delightful! Thanks, Daniel!
Please tell me who recut this roll? I'd love to have a copy!!
Eu num acredito nisso de o piano tocar sozinho não
Beautiful sound and expression! ... and you restored the player action yourself... I love the original condition of the piano cabinet with original decals. I have the same Weber D-A model (1924) which was beautifully restored, but not by me. It was expensive... but I enjoy playing it regularly and thankfully have a great technician not that far away who maintains the piano and the D-A system (or I would be lost).
The English lyrics are on the Right the French Translated Lyrics on the Left.
This was one of my fathers favorite songs as he grew up in that era! It's one of mine as well as I relate 100% to that era also!! Thanks for sharing!!
This song is a lot older than I realized. The roll must have been produced in 1949 or later, because it includes the typeface Palatino, which was not released until then.
"Isn't this a lovely day"- Berlin's best song
It's amazing they can cram the mechanism into a grand piano.
"After All, Who Do You Know That Would Know The Words To These Now Obscure Songs" I know the words to this song and play it often. Words: George B. Whiting. Music: Walter Donaldson. It's from the Ziegfeld Follies of 1927 and went into the public domain this year (2023). Who else do I know? My late mother did but I can't think of anyone living who does. Walter Donaldson also wrote "How Ya Gonna Keep 'em Down on the Farm (After They've Seen Paree)?", "Carolina in the Morning", "My Baby Just Cares for Me" (even if Nina Simone made it her own), "Love Me or Leave Me", "Little White Lies" and many others --- well-deserving of being taken out of the attic, dusted off and performed again. Pauline Alpert was a very well-known pianist of the "Novelty" style, which was popular for a brief period, before other styles overshadowed it. She was known as "The Whirlwind Pianist". There is (or was) a book available with some of her compositions, which I think she also arranged, and they're pretty difficult.
The book is "Novelty Masterpieces of the Gershwin Era. The Music of Zez Confrey, Pauline Alpert & Ruben Bloom. Selected with an Introduction by Peter Mintun". It was published by Dover Publications. I don't know if it's still in print. Zez Confrey was the composer of "Kitten on the Keys" (included in the book) and Rube Bloom was the composer of the song "Fools Rush In", with lyrics by Johnny Mercer. The arrangements aren't as virtuosic as what any of them actually played when performing or recording, but nor are they easy.
Best roll of this song by far!
This is one of - if not - the best player piano performances on youtube!
A merry interpretation. :)
So catchy, enjoyed singing along even though I suck as singing. Actually better at playing the piano -- not as good as Phil Ohman but still better than I sing.
Wow how does it do the sustain and crescendo and decrescendo, or at least piano and forte. Super amazing. Also, the piano sounds really cool as well.
As far as sustain is concerned, if you look at the rolls, you can see some spots where the holes are contiguous, so that instead of single hole, there is a vertical column where there's no paper. The instrument is pneumatic, the holes let the air flow and the paper stops it.Each column is for a key or some other switch. The long holes are how the sustain works, if it doesn't go on too long. If a column where there's no paper is too long, it will affect the stability of the roll and probably tear. Otherwise, there are some columns with lots of holes but each separated by a small piece of paper. Presumably the valve needs time to react to a hole appearing or disappearing, so the damper won't fall back onto the strings if the gaps between the holes aren't too big. Or it would start to fall but not get to the strings before being pulled back. For dynamics, simpler player pianos (or pneumatic instruments or musical automata, as you prefer) don't have any means of realizing them except for playing more notes at a time, e.g., octave doublings or fuller voicings. Or more instruments, if it's an orchestrion, for example. However, there are "reproducing pianos" that could reproduce dynamics. The keys on a piano react to differences in pressure (unlike harpsichord keys) and if you can throttle or increase, the air pressure, you can change the dynamics on a pneumatic piano. I don't know whether this instrument can do this. I assume the levers are expression levers that can control various parameters, but I'm not an expert on the subject.
Nice tune played well
Listen to that wonderful expression! Really does sound like a pianist is sitting there playing your beautiful grand! That DuoArt system is amazing! Thanks for sharing!
Beautiful,Lf you dont mind gives me tears of joy and to want to sing along.Part of a time of great music.
Absolutely great roll! Your Weber sounds excellent - great sound and expression. Your Weber appears to have have the key shift instead of hammer rail lift. My Weber is the same model with same dark mahogany - most of the Weber grands came this way. They made great pianos.
Your Weber DUO-ART grand sounds great and looks great. I have the same model Weber which had been restored about 1995. It now needs work. Your piano looks like it has original finish and fall board decals - very nice! I’ve loved these pianos and music since I was a kid. I’m now an over 65 year old kid.
I love this song!
I love watching Mr. Wilson’s reflection in the mirror, listening to his beautiful instrument play while relaxing in his overalls and enjoying his chewing tobacco. Living the life!
Good song thanks
Yo escuché está canción por The Smsshing Pumpkins 😂🎹🎶
What wonderful sounding piano and thanks for it being well tuned.
love the songs from this film- swing time is my favourite fred and ginger film though
Any idea where I can find some sheet music for this version?
Such a nice arrangement
In this roll you can really hear the variation of the Duo Art hitting some notes hard and others soft. My childhood piano teacher would approve. Sounds great!
Thanks!
Fantastic, thanks!
Thanks!
are the keys shifting slightliy sideways or did i have to much coffee????
BEAUTIFUL. My favorite roll of all time.
I love this, recalling in my much younger days, standing around my grandparents player piano with my cousins singing for all we were worth. Thanks for making my day!!
🤗
I REMEMBERED CLOCKWORK ORANGE!!!
That is a wonderfully regulated piano and reproducer!
I'd like to hire that ghost pianist for my bar here in Boston!!!
This is really good! And I also really liked that the lyrics were on the roll aswell
❤❤❤👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Really a gorgeous arrangement
Where did you get these recuts with the printed leaders. I’d love to buy some.
I love this.....thanks for sharing!!!😊
mr incredible loses his grip on reality
Wonderful roll, thanks for posting!
It's interesting how dynamics were achieved by just playing more notes.
