The song is about the end of ww1, in which Germany won the war in the east, and had achieved a centuries long dream of having the Baltic states under the German sphere of influence, as an aristocratic landowning class of Germans lived in the Baltic states, they also gave independence to Ukraine from the Russian empire, and although these territories became under German influence they had more autonomy than under the Russian empire. The Germans also intended to give them independence after the war but kept control to acquire food resources while they were still fighting in the west. There was much combat around riga, and after the war many Germans still stayed on the eastern front to fight the red army and try and hold onto areas they had taken. It was a shock to many victorious Germans that after they had actually beaten the mighty Russian empire, all their spoils were nullified a year later. The song is essentially about German soldiers who stayed after 1918 and tried to hold onto Latvia as long as they could, refusing to abandon the Germans there and also some of them helped out the White Russian forces. The song is about when the last Germans finally came home
