This play changed basketball. It made the rules tailer to player’s safety. Offensive players now need to generally jump straight up and land in the same spot (it means now leaning forward or fading back into defenders), and defensive players need to close out more disciplined to give offensive players their entitled cylinder. This goes for NBA, college, high school, and youth basketball

Say what you want. He got into his landing zone on purpose and that’s not basketball it’s a dirty move purposely trying to injure someone else like that. He’s not the only one to do it and the nba was correct for over correcting the action, otherwise people would be doing it all the time to Lebron, Steph etc

At the time I thought Zaza was just an tall uncoordinated not athletic by NBA standards goofy role player that was sloppy. Which isn’t a crime. The talent, basketball iq, skills, an athletic ability of the players in nba is so ridiculously high, that most role bench players that a third string don’t get a ton of minutes are going to look like scrubs or bad guarding top players in the league like Kawhi. At the time, watching the game live, I just thought goofy ass zaza was just trying to hustle and effort on this play after leanord got him with the step back but lacked the coordination, body and court awareness to stop his steps going towards leanord after the shot. Even watching this, I still think that might be the case. Zaza not being a good player does the dumb thing of focusing on the ball after the ball leaves Leonard’s hands following the ball with his eyes turning his head and seems to side shovel to plant for the possible rebound and to see if he’ll need to run back on offense. That being said, in slow motion in slow motion it doesn’t appear he had enough momentum to require the that second side shuffle to stop, he didn’t seem to jump with enough force or appeared off balance trying to defend the shot, his side shuffles it looks like he tried multiple times to put both feet under where leanord was going to land, it seems like he was looking to make contact with leanord the whole time instead of block or defend the shot. You’d think he’d try to avoid fouling a shooter that clearly has him beat and was getting the ball off with a good open shot. Why make it an and 1 situation being down 21 points. If Zaza was just trying to make a hard foul to turn the momentum or give his team a break or make it so the spurs best players would avoid trying to score with him on the ball going forward not because he can guard them but his clumsy ass would foul them hard…then why not foul leanord before he got the shot off with the time and a clean open look with your whole body. It really looks like he was trying to go for the ball or hard foul but to put his feet under leanord. That being said Zaza career wise was a bench role player, his team was getting blown out and loosing the series. He wasn’t skilled at anything really, not athletic, clumsy…career wise if your season is ending why get the reputation of being the player that severely hurts and cause’s possible career altering or ending injuries against franchise players? No coach, GM, owner, player would want him on their team. Players are union brothers and unions don’t tolerate members hurting or fucking over or causing problems or reporting to management on other members. He’d be black balled shunned from the league. No team would want him on their roster because everyone would know or think he was signed for the soul purpose of seriously hurting an opponent. Being Zaza was a low minute bench role player with no specialized skill and was clumsy….I can see him prioritizing getting more future contracts hoping around the league riding the bench instead of possibly winning a ring. Yeah he’d be an nba champion without any more nba contracts or friendships going forward known as a dirty bad person. I can’t see Zaza wanting to loose out millions, ga terrible reputation, be remembered as a piece of shit, be without a job for the opportunity to win one ring as a low minute bench player. That doesn’t make sense. Also, Zaza legitimately was just a clumsy tall uncoordinated dude that lacked the skill and athleticism to properly guard top players and lack the basketball iq to understand spacing/where top players and himself would land or head or what to do.
