Luigi's Mansion PAL Hard difficulty pt. 3 (Hidden Mansion, Area 4)
This difficulty rules!
For those who aren't aware of the situation, especially people who only played on the NTSC-U and NTSC-J Gamecube versions of the game,
Luigi's Mansion had an unlock feature called "The Hidden Mansion" which didn't really change all that much in its first 2 revision points. You vacuumed ghosts faster, and they hit for more damage, but it mostly felt like you were playing the same game since all the spawns were the same, and it was still way too easy to hit some random furniture to bag hearts for HP. Honestly I would have described it as just making the game faster, nothing more.
For the PAL release of the game, the developers took this unlock mode back to the drawing board and made it feel distinct by clearly shaping it into a harder difficulty--there are a lot more ghosts, harder ghosts, it's more difficult to come by hearts, the HP often comes in smaller quantities, and all of this comes together to make Luigi's Mansion feel more like a proper survival horror video game.
At one point in this run, I drop down to a dangerously low 10 HP! (and you can bet I've seen the Good Night!/game over screen off recording before.) The most consistent way to get health on this difficulty is to try and suck up 2 or more ghosts simultaneously, there's only one object in the game that seems to drop a huge heart every time you hit it now.
Anyway, this run was pretty decent and I feel happy enough with it to put this game to bed for good. I struggle with Chauncey's horses, and I made some mistakes I could have cleaned up on the King Boo/Bowser fight, but I managed to get gold on every portrait ghost, and I collected enough treasure to earn an A rank.
I messed up a speedy spirit in the billiard's room, didn't vacuum all the treasure optimally in general, and I respect my time too much to grind for the random gold mouse in the sealed room--it's also possible I may have simply forgotten a spirit or mouse due to foggy memory, but I know I got really close to optimal.
I tried not to spend too much time forcing random gold mouse spawns, forgetting what I was doing, obsessively stalking a singular Boo, and so on, but there's a few parts of this run that might be a bit unpleasant to watch and worth fast forwarding.
I recorded this on a Nintendo Wii with YPbPr/component output, and I ran it in Swiss, which runs the game at Gamecube clock speeds, so some slowdown is present. I forced 480p, and disabled the deflicker filter, since the NTSC-U version seems like it never used the deflicker filter while in progressive mode anyway. You might notice some color banding--that's just Luigi's Mansion for ya'. Couldn't tell you why Ninty opted to skip on a dithering algorithm.
If you weren't reading in between those lines, this means you don't need to run the PAL version at 50 Hz.
I uploaded this into 3 parts to ensure the highest quality possible, but admittedly, my Wii's DAC does have some picture quality flaws that make me wonder if it was overkill, heh.
While the game does briefly have menus that run at 60 frames per second, I decided it was so infrequent that it wasn't worth uploading 60. The majority of the game is 30 fps capped.

Diva Plavalaguna's retarded bother (stones in belly)
I'd pay for the add-on board again if it had audio input. With the RetroTINK 5x-Pro I could have component and composite connected at the same time and not miss a beat. With this OSSC Pro add-on I'll have to actually remove inputs, or spend a LOT on switchers and splitters and hope it really is lossless, never mind automatic. I did buy a pair of Y-adapters like Bob from retrorgb suggested we do for the RT5X but my capture sees activity in only one audio channel, even if it both channels combined. Maybe they'll get it right when they redo it with RF...
I wouldn't get my hopes up. There's only one board, and they already have unpopulated solder points for RF screw terminals on current ones--no plans to make a different board afaik. There's no space for audio inputs anywhere on the board. If you haven't purchased already, the Tink5x might make more sense for you.
I have an "RCA AUDIO/VIDEO/S-VIDEO SELECTOR" that seems old enough to probably be a mechanical switcher only, and uses sliding red plastic rather than LEDs to show the chosen input. By that, I mean loss of audio quality is probably minimal. I found one online with the model "VH911" but I have no model sticker on mine. Of course, it uses physical push buttons on top to select the input, so it may not be ideal for you.
@@jaffa225 There's actually a pretty common one of those on Amazon (at least in the US) that's like the price of a fastfood outing for one, as long as 4-port is fine. But yeah again, doesn't really make sense to go this route if a tink5x would make you equally happy for cheaper. (I'd also suspect tink5x makes NES cvbs look slightly better, but I bet OSSC Pro wins on some other platforms like TurboGrafx-16)

Personally I found health drops giving you two full points instead of one a godsend lol. It doesn't help that I play almost exclusively with Miyu/Fay (though funnily enough my personal best was with Miyu/Fox) But the final game overall has been considerably harder. So while only needing three health pickups to fully healed Miyu/Fay is a bit overkill. You don't need to scrambling as hard getting them when you're on mercy mode (I dunno if this was intentional but it seems if you took greater damage than your current health, the game will give you mercy and keep you alive instead of killing you automatically) I think these balance adjustments were for the better overall.
You’re pretty good
This is SO blurry! I think I'm just used to PAL composite that shows a bit of buzzing and artefacting but the image stays clear and the pixels sharp.
CRT TV decoders are WAY better than most weird capture devices and doodads from a decade ago. This was just me making do with what I had. If I could somehow justify $300 big ones for a Retrotink 5x it would look sharper and generally better than this.
i concur, i like the blurriness and it's no doubt some games were meant to take advantage of the composite signal's blending because of how a lot of genesis games use dithering as a way to bring out more colors, take vectorman for an example. that game has loads of line dithering for the backgrounds and the foreground platforms and when compared to an emulated screenshot the structure is supposed to have a transparency effect whereas if it wasn't blended it will just be a bunch of lines although i will admit the blurriness in this video does hurt my eyes a bit but however it would be nice to have the 32x's composite signal than the standard "rainbow" sega genesis composite signal it displays
Apparently these early revisions also had somewhat inferior performance with transparency effects.
epic, indeed
Wow I guess the buzzing is more common I thought it was just mine.
The buzzing is a quirk of the composite signal in general. Other consoles like the Genesis, PC Engine or the SNES present the sams type of noise.
how did you get this to work i tried to use loseless vide its just a black screen can you help me please

@@gamingwolf7895 Just try exporting lol This sounds normal to me. It exports as a series of images, so you'll need to import that into a video editor that can turn sequential images into video.
Fucking genius honestly
I discovered this problem on my old SCPH-1002 back in 2020 while preparing for a stream of Soul Reaver. It's crazy how little known this issue is, because it's quite obvious once you've seen it and it has a rather large effect on how certain games look and play. The issue exists because the old GPU truncates the three least significant bits from the color values while drawing smooth gradients, essentially rounding down the numbers and reducing precision, causing visible banding artifacts. Possibly this was done to save bandwidth on the early VRAM configuration. It only affects gouraud shaded textured polygons. Games using gouraud shaded polygons without textures (e.g. Final Fantasy VII, Tobal 2) are unaffected, as are games that use textures without shading (a lot of early PS1 titles, such as Ridge Racer). Games with flat-shaded textured polygons (e.g. Tekken 2) show minor discoloration but since there are no smooth gradients, you don't get banding either so the problem is barely visible. The problem is by far the most noticeable on games that use large, smooth shaded textured polygons. This means you'll mostly see it in games with large open environments such as the ones demonstrated in the video. Other examples include the Tomb Raider games, Soul Reaver and the Spyro the Dragon games. In addition to the color banding, the old GPU/VRAM configuration is also considerably slower at drawing transparency effects. This is why you see the frame drops in Metal Gear Solid when motion blur is active. It also noticeably affects VFX-heavy games such as Final Fantasy VIII and IX in their battle scenes.
Thanks for this high effort post and excellent explanation.
This voice acting, as over the top as it is, is iconic. It’s so wild and that’s what makes it memorable and terrifying. I fukn love this. Pure camp. Adds to the creepiness of this entire level. And those emaciated zombie cult members that chased you and breathed fire? Haunted my dreams
The reason of why health drops recover 2 full shield points is because otherwise Expert mode would be a pain to complete if you do a Miyu and Fay run, as nearly everything does 1 full shield point damage or more (the lasers from the battleships can 2 shot Miyu and Fay down... unlikely to happen unless you let it on purpose)... but on hard or normal it's kinda overkill to have that much recovery, also the final release incentives more the player to intercept the enemy units thanks to their buffed power against Corneria (the normal flying mobs got nerfed in that regard but attack slighty faster to make it not much notiecable, the planet canon you REALLY want to stop it as it's a whoping 50% damage).
Hey, thanks for the thoughtful reply. I just... kinda' am not sure if I entirely agree, since my run here is indeed mostly Miyu (switch to Falco like once around 55 minutes just in case things went bad), it is indeed on Expert mode, and--not a brag, but I ended this run with 0% damage to Corneria. I pretty much annihilated this run if I'm being completely honest--only the score/rank was a minor blemish. Do you think I'm unusually good at this game? Or maybe I just got insanely lucky? I honestly don't know, would be nice to have a second opinion.
@@licentioushowler3400 It is a mix of luck and skill, luck for the most part involves the item drops and the "hunters" you fight (by hunters I mean the Mirage Dragon, Hunter Phantron, Tektron and Space Blade... you got the best Hunter selection in this run, the worst is any mix that involves Space Blade) but the skill shows when you can deal with bad situations like having to fight with little to no HP and survive or complete objectives as fast as you can, getting an A or Star rank without doing a lot of speed run strategies (like just focus on main targets while intercepting every now and then some enemies to let the damage to Corneria not suprass 99% or abusing of Nova Bombs to deal with enemies or the Star Wolf... yeah, the Star Wolf pretty much 2 bombs = you win the fight) is already great. Edit: One funny thing about the Battleships, if you intercept them when they're charging the 50% Corneria damage cannon, the battleship won't attack you with it's 3+ Shield point damage lasers as it's systems focuses more on the planetary cannon giving you an easy aproach when HP is not good enough.
@@PikangsFutaba Thanks for the explanation. I never knew people put in this much consideration to approaching battleships, but if you do enough runs of the game, you probably start to notice patterns. I just press the boost button on the first first possible frame and it "works out" most of the time lmao
@@licentioushowler3400 Indeed, with either Miyu and Fay that works 99% of the time without taking a hit from the lasers, but if you have Peppy or Slippy especially... you need to stay moving while aproaching or if the situation allows it, let the battleship start charging the cannon to not worry about it's lasers in the aproach (Fox and Falco is a mixed bag on that, but at least you don't need to move a lot), at this point is very well known that the Pepper Coins/Medals recovers your HP at max but never appears again... while also getting all of them (per-difficulty) unlocks the secret base that enables the homing charge shots that the most known prototype has enabled by default (and doing it on all 3 difficulties replaces Andross shadow in the title screen with Fox's... Normal and Hard modes can take a while because you need 2+ runs depending on the RNG, while in Expert can be done in a single run as long as you manage to reach Astropolis with the 2 characters alive, as in order to pull that off you need to sacrifice your 1st after getting the coin of the side you pick while with your 2nd picks the coin of the opposite side... any of the 2 can pick the 3rd coin on Astropolis that is close to Andross' core), and also getting Star Rank enables the 2 characters you picked to have the Lv.2 Blaster from the get-go... doing that with all 6 characters, the character select screen song is replaced with an oldie but goodie from Star Fox 1.
Back then gameplay, graphics and plot were more important than voice acting Something that the later generations wont get it
lol--naw, I don't agree with this at all... first of all, the Japanese version actually has competent and talented voice actors, secondly this game is kind of a mess and does not play very well tbh.

@@jackalhead7433 Can you explain to me how the controls are 'no different'? In Wrath of Heaven, you have camera control on right stick + a "center camera behind ninja" button, you can move freely in all directions with a walk and run mapped to the left stick and can face your ninja quickly in any direction on a dime, and the speed of the game is cranked up dramatically because of the improved control. I don't see how you can look at differences like these and say "they're the same".
The concept of this game is so cool but it's just painful to play.... A modern remake would be really awesome. Maybe one day.
Yeah a bit of a slideshow lol
Star Fox Zero really should have chosen this game as a template. SF64 did not need a remake, it was already the better version of SF1. But this really could shine if it was modernized.
The Manji Cult is both comically strange & nightmarishly bizarre. The baby cries, the dancing cultists, the menacing and ominous music playing over the stage...and this weird boss fight.
Yeah, long after the "bad dub" and "PS1 jank" funnies wear off, the atmosphere of this game really creeps into your brain. Acquire poached some good artists if nothing else.

Oh, sorry you were using this in hopes that you could find them. : P I found the unlocks to be kind of silly and unfun, so I didn't really ever bother with that in this final version of the game tbh. I have the same on va4, need to replace headphone Amp?
Probably lol--I'll maybe look into doing the repair this summer, free time pending. Will definitely message you if you're interested in the fix.
while the voice acting was funny, the level itself gave me nightmares, mostly due to the intro loading sequence picture, and the music didn't help either. it took me years to finally get the courage to beat this stage, cause i had to skip it by cheating the first time, and then let a friend "borrow" the game and never got it back, until I rebought a used copy years later.
Understandable; there is a certain level of unsettling atmosphere and liminal nuance to this game, its aesthetics, and level design... unsure how much of it was happy accidents tbh, but I totally know what you mean how some levels really bore into your mind.
@@licentioushowler3400 the only other stage that came close to creeping me out was the last level, but being that it was the final stage, it quickly proved to be more annoying than creepy I got over it. This stage though...even now sometimes when I see the loading screen i flinch. Of course it wouldn't be the last time these games gave me the creeps, Wrath of Heaven/Return from Darkness had the stupid cemetary stage with the undead you couldn't kill without special life draining weaponry...and the freaking zombies that were employed by the manji cult got brought back among them.
@@dethtroy2185 Interestingly, I never really felt quite the same way about Wrath of Heaven--I think the pace of that game is just so much faster and the mechanics so much more arcadey, stylish, and impactful that I never really got to take things slow and just let an atmospheric level kinda' wash over me... ultimately though, those changes were totally worth whatever minor hit in atmosphere for allowing WoH to carve out a unique and polished niche for "stealth action" games.
@@licentioushowler3400 certainly won't deny that, but i guess some aspects are just meant to be creepy if you perceive it that way.
When I was a child I thought my disc had a glitch or something because of that baby crying sound, I didn't think it was meant to be there and it annoyed the HELL out of me so I never replayed this level.
It is logical if one ninja dissappears then another might come from behind xD
epic
no story, no stages, just boss fights... what a shame.
There is a story though... It's just a simpler one. And I don't know how you can look at the planets and think they don't count as stages--they have platforming challenges and puzzles in them lol.

My teacher told me about this glitch, I'm a senior in high school and we laughed our asses off at this video

Still no one has ever told me what was up with the baby sounds.
@@philbecker4676 I used to think it was the gray people's noise. You know the ones that walk weird, and the orange ones that breathe fire.
