Hi. More torque but low revving so a bit slower. Despite this video, it is a good cold starter. I rebuilt it with new rings and bearings. Less smokey than 2.25 diesels I've had.

From what I remember the 4-203 was Indirect Injection and was a great engine,it’s the 4-236 which is the smaller version of the 6-354 which is direct injection. This engine was made quite a while before Perkins went to direct injection,I’m sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong,I used to work on these engines but it was over 50 years ago,they were used a lot in forklift trucks and farm machinery and some people fitted them to Land Rovers because the Land Rover Diesel wasn’t that good.

@@davidellis279 the 4203 is indirect but the last of them were direct, they were called the D-4203 . It’s basically the same engine but different cylinder head and pistons

Yes but don't do it with it running like you can with twisting a distributor. Shut it off, adjust slightly, restart.

Coolant looks ok. That might explain exhaust gases coming through to the adjacent cylinder when its inlet valve is open

Hi Philip, I didn't know there were two types. I read that the 4203 had ceramic liners and couldn't be changed. I have a picture of the bores but not sure how to share it here.

Liners look to be about 3mm thick

@@johnboath27 john the 4203 i had was an engine removed from a range rover that had seized . on one cylinder the very thin chromemium type liner had been pulled down over the crank hence the seize . the water pump allso defect . there was a man who repaired landrovers in our area for many many years . the engine he said was certain type perkins and spares were different . i did get the parts with a little difficulty. the 4203 came out of many vehicles the commer walkthru van was a common one the engines were often nicknamed bread van engines because of. the tightening torque of of the head bolt was a misprint in the manuals for a long time and it caused problems . i have allot of info on these and wil keep in touch philip
